• The students understand and use the
past tense.
• The students know the form of the
regular and irregular past.

about states that happened in the past
and form questions using the past tense.

The Simple past is used to talk about
actions that happened in the past.
USE OF THE SIMPLE PAST
1.Actions completed in the past. Columbus
sailed to America in 1498. My father died last
year.
We crossed the Channel yesterday.
2.Actions that happened over a period of time in the past.
John worked in Barcelona for two years. I kived in
Rubi for ten years.
3.Habitual or repeated actions in the past. When I was a
child we always went to the cinema at the weekends.
When I lived in Rubi I never visited my family.

SPELLING
• 1) Double the consonant if the consonant is
stressed
stop – stopped swap -
swapped
• 2)Add only –d, when the verb ends with –e
love – loved save – saved
• 3)Verbs ending in 'y' preceded by a consonant:
Change 'y' to 'i' Then add -ed.
hurry - he hurried (watch out! play – played)

IRREGULAR VERBS FORM
• The form CHANGES from infinitives,
usually with a vowel change.
• Can be grouped according to certain
change patterns, which helps to
memorize them.
