2. LET’S COMPARE!
Humans have existed on this planet for 6 million years
But the first digital computer came about only 72 years
ago!

6. THE MAN WHO STARTED IT ALL
Charles Babbage
Considered as the ‘father of the modern computer’
Invented the ‘Difference Engine’ and developed plans
for the ‘Difference Engine 2’ and ‘Analytical Engine’

7. HE PAVED THE WAY FOR A ‘NEU’
ERA (OF COMPUTERS)
John von Neumann.
Known for introducing the idea of ‘Von Neumann’
architecture

8. THE
‘FATHER OF INFORMATION THEORY’
Claude Shannon
Showed how Boolean Algebra could be applied
electrically to make digital calculations.
Established the field of information theory in 1948
His work is the basis on which todays modern
computers run.

10. A TRUE VISIONARY
Admiral Grace Hopper
Involved in many projects involved in applications
programming (Harvard mark I, II, III)
Saw the possible ability of the widespread use of
computers by businesses.

11. DENNIS RITCHE
Worked on the Unix operating system
Modified ‘B’ into ‘C’,
Language ‘C’ gave the Unix many advantages
‘C’ and the Unix are the basis for many programming
languages and operating systems used today.

Notas del editor
Show comparison between human existence and evolution of comps
Show comparison between first computer and now
Talk about how countless men and women have worked to get where we are. I’m going to discuss a few of those today
Charles Babbage- Talk about his difference engine ( its function and how it worked) and difference engine 2 and analytical engine. What the analytical engine did (in detail and how this relates to modern computers) and why he is considered the ‘father of modern computer’.
John von Neumann- Describe Von Neumann architecture and how he described the ideas of ram and rom. Talk about how these are basis for todays computers. Talk about how were previous ideas for how a computer should be (program hardwired into one function)
Talk about his 1937 and 1948 publication and what he proposed
Talk about how he co created the transistors and made his own company. Also, his taste for talent lead to many of his employees to leave and spawn amd, intel etc. Talk about quantum theory and how he applied it to semi-conductors
Talk about all her contributions to computing including all her work on computer programming.
Talk about how she worked to make computers more accessible including her work on developing COBOL, flowmatic, etc.
Talk about developing programming languages and operating systems and his story.
