I'm not an HR guy or a recruiter: but I'm a great salesman, and I train sales professionals on how to make the sale. The most important sale you can make is getting a great sales job that gives the you sales career of your dreams. Here are 10 tips for a great sales job interview.

You may be an experienced sales pro who knows how to convince the client and land the big deal, but even career sales professionals can experience anxiety and stage fright during job interviews. I'm not an HR guy or a recruiter: but I'm a great salesman, and I train sales professionals on how to make the sale.
- 1. Know Before You Go: Do your homework. Google the company, the product, the CEO, the recruiter conducting the interview, and find out everything you can about the company before your interview so you are fully prepared to sell your skills that meet their needs. Prepare for a sales interview with as much research and effort as you prepare for a sales call: your confidence will show!
- 2. Prepare a list of questions to ask, and write them down: Even if you're typically a pro at "winging it", for a job interview write your questions down in case you get flustered and experience some stage fright during your interview.
- 3. Dress for success: Your first impression makes a lasting impression, and a sales job involves selling yourself as well as your product. Scope out the corporate culture before your interview: see what other employees and the senior leadership team wears to work. Dress the part - typically dress for a job one level above the one you're applying for. So if you're applying for a sales job dress for the sales manager job.

If you want to take notes on your phone or tablet during the interview, ask the interviewer if its OK to take notes and explain you are note-taking on your device.
- 5. Listen to what the interviewers says and asks: Instead of spending 75% of the interview talking, turn the tables and spend 50% of your interview listening to what the recruiter is telling you, and 50% of the interview explaining how you can meet their specific needs.
- 6. Name-drop: Do you know someone who works at the company? Let the interviewer know your contacts that could be useful in this job. Have you done business with a client, or one of their targeted potential clients? Don't boast and brag, but clearly identify your contacts, resources and references who can be useful getting and performing the job. Make sure to name-drop a bit during your interview: as long as it’s all true and accurate.
- 7. Send a thank-you note: After the interview reaffirm your interest in the job with a thank-you note, and add any information you may have forgotten to mention during the interview. E-mail is acceptable: but a handwritten note (without spelling errors!) demonstrates your attention to detail and relationship building skills. You may have interviewed with more than person: maybe a recruiter, a sales trainer, and a sales manager. Send a thank you note the same day as your interview to everyone you interviewed with. It will take 24-72 hours before the thank you note is delivered. If you know that a decision is going to be made very quickly, you may determine it's best to send an email so they receive it quickly.
- 8. Follow-up: A couple weeks after the interview call or email the interviewer, repeating your interest and availability, and adding any interesting facts or news you've learned since your interview. Note: you've already sent a thank-you note, so this is your 2nd follow-up after the interview.
- 9. Remind your references: Let references know that you gave their name during the interview, and that hopefully they'll be receiving a call regarding your qualifications for a job opening very soon.
- 10. Know when to move on: If you don't hear back after the interview despite your polite follow-up efforts, accept the fact that this job offer may not be coming. Yes, the hiring manager or recruiter should tell you the job has been offered to someone else. But don't ruin your good interview by harassing the recruiter. Accept that the job is not yours, and move on. Who knows: they may call you again for another job.
