3. Greenhouse effect
• The ability of the
atmosphere to
capture & recycle
energy emitted by
earth’s surface
4. By percentage contribution in Greenhouse
effect on earth
• Water vapour 36-70%
• Carbon dioxide 9-26%
• Methane 4-9%
• Ozone 3-7%
7. Human activities produce greenhouse gases
• Industry creates
chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)
and other halocarbons for
use in various products and
industrial processes
• Rice cultivation also
releases methane
8. • Fertilizer use increases nitrous oxide emissions
• Extracting, processing, transporting, and distributing fossil fuels
also releases greenhouse gases
• Deforestation is the second largest source of carbon dioxide.
• Carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels is the largest
single source of greenhouse gas emissions from human
activities. [2]
12. Remedies
• Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
• Replace Your Light Bulbs
• Use Less Heat and Air Conditioning
• Buy Energy-Efficient Products
• Drive Less and Drive Smart
• Use the "Off" Switch
• Use Less Hot Water
• Plant a Tree [4]
• Get a Report Card from Your Utility Company
• Encourage Others to Conserve
13. WRI/WBCSD Greenhouse Gas Protocol
• GHG Protocol establishes
comprehensive global standardized
frameworks to measure and manage
greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from
private and public sector operations,
value chains and mitigation actions.
• In 2016, 92% of Fortune 500 companies
responding to the CDP used GHG
Protocol directly or indirectly through a
program based on GHG Protocol. [5]
14. Indian GHG program
• Govt plans Rs 65,000-crore project to reduce
greenhouse gases from agriculture
• The goal of the project, with a run period 2018-
2025, is to “sequestrate” 49.9 million tonnes of
carbon gasses through improved agro-
ecosystems
• The programme will cover Madhya Pradesh’s
Chambal region, Dampa in Mizoram, Odisha’s
Similipal, Jaisalmer and Barmer in Rajasthan
besides a national wildlife corridor through
Uttarakhand, the officials said. [6]
