2. In a more traditional society, the best way to communicate with each
other would be face to face contact. This means meeting up with friends
or going to your favorite meet up spot. The word is constantly evolving
and so is the technology. Technology is important as it has changed the
way people communicate with one another.
This chapter/module presents communication aids and strategies
using technology such as multimedia and social media, web-based
presentations and communication in social media.
3. Technology is a part of just about every home today. Computers make it possible for
us to create presentations and be able to share information with people anywhere.
Learning how to make multimedia presentation is an essential skill for any college
student.
A multimedia presentation is a standalone presentation that includes
information presented with slides, video, or digital representations and includes sound
which might be a narrative, music or sound effects.
Uses of Multimedia Presentations
Multimedia presentations can be used in various areas such as in business,
education, home and public place.
In business, applications for multimedia includes presentation, training,
advertisement, video, conference, among others. For example, a sales person can
learn and provide poster with the help of multimedia.
4. In education, multimedia presentations are great ways to introduce new concepts
or explain a new technology. For example, videos that show how acid rain occurs.
In homes, there is an increasing convergence or melding of computer-based
multimedia with entertainment and games-based media. From gardening, cooking,
home design, remodeling and repair to genealogy software, multimedia has entered
the home.
Public places such as hotels, train stations, malls, museum, libraries and grocery
store uses multimedia at stand-alone terminals or kiosks, providing information and
help for consumers in the interactive manner and reduce the personal work or
manual work. For example, a hotel may provide following information like a city map
schedule of airlines services available in that hotel.
5. Elements of Multimedia
The Five Multimedia Elements are text, image/graphics, audio, video, and
animation.
1. Text
As a multimedia option, text can easily be overlooked, but it is still the most
fundamental element and most effective way to communicate in multimedia. Text is
used as headlines, subtitles, and slogans. It’s purpose is to express specific information
or reinforce information in other media. It involves the use of text types, sizes, colors
and background color. For example, you can choose the font and it’s size and color to
set a tone or project an image, or you can choose the mood you want to evoke with
background color.
6. 2. Graphics
Graphics are an important part of multimedia because
humans are visually oriented. Images including
photographs, illustrations, drawings, clip art, icons or any
other non-text elements on a website or in social media
are an example of graphics. Static pictures typically
accompany text to illustrate the point or ideas the text
makes. Photos in a multimedia application go beyond
using them just as decoration. In a multimedia context
graphics may consist of slide shows or galleries that a
website or social media visitor can view. Graphics appear
in many multimedia applications providing
communication through attractive visual affects.
7. 3. Animation
Animated elements are common multimedia
applications. Animation is a series of images put
together to give the effect of movement. In multimedia,
2D and 3D digital animation is used. Movement, rather
than just viewing a still image, is especially useful for
illustrating concepts that involve movement. Animation
is used to add visual interest or bring attention to
important information or links. It can illustrate how
things work or present information in entertaining
ways. Animation can also include interactive effects
allowing visitors to engage with the animation action
using their mouse and keyboard. Animation is a
dynamic and media-rich content that stays within one
container on a page – a very powerful form of
communication.
8. 4. Audio
Sound can enhance your website design and social media platforms. It is a multimedia
application that uses dialogue, recorded narration, music and sound effects. These are
called the audio or sound elements. When used in moderation, adding multimedia
such as sound to your presentation can be a great way to catch and focus the visitor’s
attention, to deliver information to visitors, and to help reinforce the visitor’s
comprehension of the information presented.
For example, narration can be used to describe what is being seen in an animation clip
enhancing the understanding of what the clip is all about. Featuring related music and
special sound effects are also very effective multimedia applications that can add to the
visitor’s experience.
9. 5. Video
Video is a visual multimedia application that combines a sequence of
images to form moving pictures and sound. Video can have an impact on
websites and on social media platforms in a very unique and powerful
way. You can inform the world that your company exists, spread the word
about your company, grab attention to show your visitors how to do
something, showcase a new product, build brand awareness, or even
promote an upcoming event. You name it, you can do it with video!
10. Multimedia Authoring Tools
To put it simply an authoring tool is software that helps you create digital content. This
could mean producing a complex training course for thousands of learners or it could be
something simple such as creating a PowerPoint. The following are some multimedia tools
that can be used in education, home, public places etc.
1. Power Point Presentations
PowerPoint is a presentation program developed by Microsoft. It is included in the standard Office
suite along with Microsoft Word and Excel. The software allows users to create anything from
basic slide shows to complex presentations.
PowerPoint is often used to create business presentations, but can also be used for educational or
informal purposes. The presentations are comprised of slides, which may contain text, images,
and other media, such as audio clips and movies. Sound effects and animated transitions can also
be included to add extra appeal to the presentation. However, overusing sound effects and
transitions will probably do more to annoy your audience than draw their attention.
12. Most PowerPoint presentations are created from a template, which includes a
background color or image, a standard font, and a choice of several slide
layouts. Changes to the template can be saved to a "master slide," which
stores the main slide theme used in the presentation. When changes are made
to the master slide, such as choosing a new background image, the changes
are propagated to all the other slides. This keeps a uniform look among all the
slides in the presentation.
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Photoshop is the predominant photo editing and manipulation
software on the market. Its uses range from the full-featured editing of large
batches of photos to creating intricate digital paintings and drawings that
mimic those done by hand.
14. It was originally created as a convenient and powerful way to retouch photos. Its
most basic features include easily cropping and straightening photos that were
scanned or taken with a digital camera.
Generally, this software is widely used by both amateurs and professionals.
Video Editing
Video editing is the process of manipulating and rearranging video shots to
create a new work. Editing is usually considered to be one part of the post
production process — other post-production tasks include titling, color correction,
sound mixing, etc.
15. Wikipedia defines Video editing as the manipulation and
arrangement of video shots. Video editing is used to structure and
present all video information, including films and television shows,
video advertisements and video essays.
Microsoft Publisher
Microsoft Publisher is a desktop publishing application from Microsoft,
differing from Microsoft Word in that the emphasis is placed on page layout and
design rather than text composition and proofing.
It emphasized on page layout and design rather than text composition and
proofing. This software has wide range of templates that are user friendly.

17. 5 Reasons Multimedia Presentations Are a
Classroom Must
Public speaking is an invaluable skill, but unfortunately it is
one that we often do not give enough time or attention to.
However, multimedia presentations (like digital stories) can
lay the groundwork for developing those skills. Done right,
they provide a perfect forum for combining images, text, and
powerful oratory in any classroom situation. Not only do they
allow students who do not like public speaking to test the
waters and build confidence, but they also allow teachers to
target instruction to those students who really need support.
18. 1. Multimedia presentations develop confidence in language skills
2. Process-driven presentations encourage meaningful feedback.
3. Script-writing strengthens ELA skills -- including information literacy
4. Multimedia presentations challenge students to think creatively
5. Choice provides opportunity for students to shine.
