woernerundpartner is one of Germany's leading architectural practices for health care, with
about 120 employees based at four offices in Germany: Frankfurt am Main, Dresden,
München and Hamburg. Founded in 1971 by the architect Heinrich Wörner, the practice
worked towards the principle that good architecture improves recovery, work ethic and
society. woernerundpartner covers a very broad spectrum of expertise including
architecture, masterplanning, urban design, landscape and interior design.
woernerundpartner accompanies its clients from the first preliminary design sketch,
through the development of a technically sophisticated conception up to its effective
implementation. Through the successful participation in international architectural
competitions woernerundpartner regularly reviews its own performance and competence.
Social and cultural responsibilities are dealt with membership in several different
committees. Every building implemented by woernerundpartner according to its individual
task, represents a unicum, a unique, innovative architectural solution. Its dimensioning and
design evolves from the operators‘ and users‘ demands. Its shape, materiality and colour
conception result from the specifics of its given location.
For the protection of the environment and dedicated to a sense for sustainability, all
woernerundpartner planning conceptions excel in utilising the full potential of the complete
given resources, flexible layouts, process oriented facilities, durable, aesthetically aging,
maintenance proof materials, and the abdication of an exaggerated mechanisation.
The equipment counts more than 120 PC workstations, CAD software and additional
software for office, project planning software, GIS, 3D rendering, video editing and desktop
publishing

Klinikum Offenbach GmbH – Offenbach Clinics
Focused efficancy - Healthcare Facility providing maximum medical care and benefit regarding the
urban development of Offenbach, a town next to Frankfurt am Main (Airport)

New construction: Useable Area: 29 040 m² Gross Floor Area: 59 050 m²
729 beds, 12 operation theatres, 18 clinics, institutes and in-patient departments cover almost all
medical diciplines, Euro 160 million total construction costs.
.

The new clinic - a comb-shaped building composed of four wings – provides space for several
competence centres, areas designated for general care, intensive care, surgery, diagnosis and
treatment as well as a technical equipment, installations centre and a heliport to a population of
about 450,000 people. The hospital takes about 32,000 in-patient and about 40,000 out-patients
annually.

The clinic is Offenbach’s biggest financial investment since the end of World War II. The decision for
the new construction brought one of the most modern clinics to Offenbach and also a benefit
regarding the urban development and potential development of the city district. Former situation:

After relocation to the new building, several buildings on the clinic premises were deconstructed,
among them an area-dominating 17-storey central building .
.

This provides a spacious campus and forecourt situation to the entrance, cafeteria and Tommyhall
and enables construction of clinical-related buildings in the future.
.

The flexible layout of the new house can be adapted to changing work flows and is offering con-
veniently short routes for patients, staff and visitors. Even the “hardware structure” can be adapted
to future requirements by adding another “tooth to the left or the right of the back of the comb”.

The entire clinical centre is housed in a seven-storey building : The examination and treatment
areas are located in the lower floors, the patient areas in the upper floors.
.

The public area in front of the building includes a generous entrance hall, a gym, a two-storey
cafeteria with outer terrace, shops, a chapel and a muslim prayer room.

Warm colours and lots of light – these are the central design elements used in Offenbach –
out-and inside.

A specially designed system based on attractive coloured patterns helps patients and visitors to find
their way to their destination in the huge facility.
.

Without any need for words the system takes over the guidiance through the house and creates at
the same time a form of art in architecture.
.

Staff, visitors and patients find their way and reach their destination.
.

That may be the emergency room, an information desk, a care base, a door, a waiting area or the
washrooms.
.

Orientation and structuring in this big building is also faciliated by the different designed inner
courtyards of the strucure. All of them vary in design and colour. The red, yellow or green of the
plants used offer a constantly changing play of colours depending on the time of day and year.

In the children’s ward secured play areas are integrated into the inner courtyards.
.

The central op area involves 8 interdisciplinary theatres, 4 more specialized are in other areas.

patients, dialysis patients.

Wards and patient rooms: The structure of the building enables the creation of flexible station sizes
and the consequent adaption to the respective patient volume. The rooms located in the connection
areas can be assigned to different nursing bases.
.

In order to create comfortable patient rooms with an hotel character, particular attention has been
paid to lighting design, colours and materials. Low parapets enable the lying patient to view the
nature or the city’s szenery, the windowsills serve as seating places.
.

The patient rooms are bright and friendly, with high-quality, made-to-measure fittings that also
incorporate the medical supply system. The adult patient rooms are decorated in warm, homely
sand and earth tones, …………

Kreiskrankenhaus Schotten Gesundheitszentrum Wetterau gGmbH – District Hospital Schotten

140 beds; also outpatient facilities. 240 doctors, nurses and administrative staff; approximately 5 000
inpatients and 7 000 outpatients per year.

Groundbreaking ceremony took place on 10 September 2009. The five-storey building, with its three
levels of care, was placed on a southern slope of the landscape using the sloping terrain for a light-
filled building with pleasant terrace and park access. The overall project consists of two phases. The
first was completed in May 2011.
.

The shell of the new construction was developed from small elements in aluminum. In its various
shades of green the facade pay tribute to the situation and atmosphere of the wooded site and
reflect it back through the vertical arrangement. Apart from this very own aesthetics this design of
the façade offer a second advantage, a protective shell for the rooms behind and the entire building.
.

The second phase involves the deconstruction of the upper floors of an existing building and its
reconstruction to build up the new main entrance of the hospital and a spacious, landscaped
forecourt situation - as well as a new building for the management until 2013.
.

The Wetterau gGmbH is the operator of the district hospital Schotten. The philosophy of the operator
for its health care buildings demands modern architectural solutions, resource, energy and cost-
effective planning, and buildings with people-centered dimensions and aesthetics.
Contruction phases
2009-2013
.

The first phase is completed. A five-storey building with cozy two-bed rooms, rooms with wonderful
views, bright and full of light, modern diagnostic and treatment facilities in direct connection to the
operating theatres and emergency room, a large, interdisciplinary intensive care, attractive lab
workstations, physical therapy, a new patient and employee cafeteria and a spacious entree.
.

The exterior and interior design of the new building reflects its beautiful location on a hill in the
woods. The site situation and the benefits of the topography allowed the construction of a light-filled
building with pleasant terrace and park access.
.

On the ground floor is the department of internal medicine, as well as the intensive care with up to
ten beds and a recovery room with direct access to the operating theatres.
.

On the garden level are laboratories and the physical therapy with access to the park as well as the
generously glazed cafeteria, with outdoor terrace.
.

The interiour design of the three ward levels above follow different concepts realized by the
combination of equipment, colors, materials, lighting and decoration. They concepts consider the
needs of sick people to feel protected and secure, and ensure the activation of the reconvalescents.
Each patient room gains light, air and landscape by floor to ceiling windows. The en suite shower
rooms are also subject to the interiour color and material concept

Nurses and doctors work at ergonomic designed and attractive workplaces. None of the rooms fail
natural light and outdoor situations since all rooms inside the building are located at a centrally
located courtyard, a small green oasis

Like the facade elements in their spring colors correspond with the surrounding forest, the design
of the interiour follows the idea to copy seasonal colors of the outside world into the inner world by
the choice of materials, patterns and colorations.

Kreiskrankenhaus Schotten Gesundheitszentrum Wetterau gGmbH - District Hospital Schotte.
The arrangement of the functions correspond to the standards of modern work processes. In the
entrance hall on the ground floor the reception and the information point are located at a central
location. The lifts are located close by. For orientation there is a color coding system that is
designed differently in different levels. It copies the colors of the natural surroundings of the house,
using more intensive colors level by level..
.

After destrucion and partly reconstruction of the old bedhouse in the back of the new construction, a
further new building at the hospital will give home to the management, medical services and the
meeting rooms of the doctors.
