SUPPRESSION OF FIRE
SUPPRESSION OF FIRE
o HISTORY
 THE CRADLE OF HUMANKIND – a site that
explains that human ancestors has controlled
fire hundred year ago.
What is Suppression of Fire?
 Suppression of Fire
 A fire-fighting tactics used to suppress fire.
 It requires various techniques, equipment and
training in fire-fighting.
 Encompasses varied activities such as fire
prevention, fire control, fire safety etc.
 As provided by Section 54, Chapter IV, R.A.
6975,
The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) shall be responsible for
the suppression of all destructive fires on buildings, houses,
and other structures and other similar incident.
 R.A. 9514
“An Act Establishing a Comprehensive Fire
Code of the Philippines,”
 PD 1185
The old Fire Code of the Philippines
amended by R.A. 9514.
Activities in Suppression of Fire
1. Fire Prevention
 Intended to reduce sources of ignition.
 It is focused on programs to educate people such as fire drills
and so on.
2. Fire Control
 It consists of depriving a fire of Fuel (reducing agent), Oxygen
(oxidizing agent), Heat and Chemical chain reaction.
 Controlling the FIRE TETRAHEDRON.
3. Fire Fighting
 Act of extinguishing destructive fires.
Activities in Suppression of Fire
4. Fire Safety
 Precautionary actions that are taken to prevent or reduce the fire
from its drastic effect.
 Fire safety measures include planning the construction of a
building or any structures.
5. Fire Protection
 It is the study and practice of mitigating the unwanted effects of
fire.
 Involves the study of behavior, compartmentalization,
suppression and investigation of fire.
Activities in Suppression of Fire
6. Law Enforcement
 Enforcement of laws regarding the Fire Code of the Philippines
under the R.A. 9514.
 Includes the inspections, investigation of Fire Personnel to a
particular structure or building in accordance with the law.
Structural Fire Prevention
1. Passive Fire Prevention
 This is the use of integral, fire resistance rated wall and floor
intended to limit the spread of fire.
 Keeping the Fire from its origin to enable firefighting and
evacuation.
2. Active Fire Prevention
 Manual and automatic detection and suppression of fires.
 Installing fire sprinkler system or through the use of fire alarm
and fire extinguisher.
3. Fire Safety Education
 Refers to the procedures and fire safety plan given to the
occupants of a particular building or structures.
Fire Prevention System
1. Sprinkler System
 A type of built in sprinklers works by the increase of room
temperatures which automatically operates the system to put out
the fire.
2. Standpipe System
 Galvanized steel or plastic pipes located inside the building from
the lowest to the top floor with water under pressure for use in
case of fire.
3. Fire Alarm System
 Any visual or audible signal produced by a device or system to
warn the occupants or fire fighters of the presence or danger of
fire.

 Fire Prevention
Daily Inspection
 “Inspection” is a quick check to verify that the Fire Ext.
is in the proper place & in good working order.
 On Cartridge Operated Ext’s- check that the red stem
on top of the cap is in the down position.
 Check to see if the plunger has been activated & seal is
intact.
 Check exterior housing and hoses for defects.
 Check for proper & current certification stickers.
 Check the mounting bracket for defects.
Inspection Cont.
 On Stored Pressure Ext’s- check that the
indicator on the gauge is in the green area. If it is
in overcharged or undercharged range replace
unit.
 Inspect activation pin, seals,
 Inspect hose, nozzle, housing, mounting bracket.
 Check for proper certifications sticker.
Inspection Cont.
 On Mobile Equipment fire suppression systems-
check that the pull pin & red actuator knob is in
place at all activation points.
 Check all hoses, connection, nozzles, unit
housing and mounting for defects.
 Check for proper certifications stickers.
 If any of these components are defective, get the
unit checked or serviced. Before operation.
Steps of a Physical Inspection of
a Fire Suppression Systems
 Inspect all activation
points.
 Check unit for pin,
handle, safety clips
Steps of a Physical Inspection of
a Fire Suppression Systems Cont.
 Inspect hose & spray
nozzles for damage,
kinks, or missing parts,
etc.
 If integrity of the system
has been compromised
shut it down, get it fixed.
Steps of a Physical Inspection of
a Fire Suppression Systems Cont.
 Visually inspect the gas
cartridges for damage.
 Inspect extinguisher unit
for damage.
 Report & repair any
substandard units.
 Make sure unit has a
State Fire Marshall
Sticker.
Maintenance
 “Maintenance” is a through check of fire ext’s and fire
suppression systems.
 Maintenance is performed by qualified technicians at a
minimum of once a year.
 When you perform your routine inspections, check the
maintenance date on the sticker.
Proper Step to Activate a Fire
Suppressions System.
1. Stop & Rib all moving
equipment.
2. Lower all raised
attachments.
3. Shut down engine.
4. If possible turn masters
switch off.
5. Activate the fire
suppression system.
Proper Steps to Activate Fire
Suppression Cont.
 Exit the vehicle once the fire is out or knocked down safely so
you can leave unharmed.
 If safe to do so secure the hand held ext. in case a flair up of
the fire reoccurs.
 If the suppression can not put out the fire, this unit can be used
to help you escape.
 Call Dispatch or Hoistman as soon as possible, notifying the
type of emergency.
 Put on self rescuer, exit to refuge or out of the mine per
company procedures.
First Aid Measures
 Eye contact: wash with water for a minimum of
15 minutes.
 Skin contact: Wash area with soap and water.
 Inhalation: Remove from exposure.
 Ingestion: Give large amounts of water and
induce vomiting.
Fire Prevention, Removing the Potential
for Fire Occurrences. An Ounce of
Prevention Is Worth a Pound of Cure.
 Good Housekeeping is a must. Check for and remove
all rags, paper, or combustible products from engine, or
power train compartments daily.
 Keeping machine in good operating conditions; inspect
unit for leaks, drips, chaffed hoses in areas where heat
can be generated.
 Wash off any accumulated hydraulic oil, fuels, or
grease, if hydraulic hose fails in the area, wash off
area before beginning, don’t burn it off with radiate heat
from engines, this can cause a fire.
