4. The Iroquois Confederacy, also known as the Iroquois League was governed by the Iroquois Great Council. Each Iroquois nation sent between eight and fourteen leaders to the Great Council, or they agreed on political decisions. These politicians were called chiefs, but they were actually elected officials chosen by the Clan Mothers or the women leaders of the clans.

5. LONGHOUSES The Iroquois people lived in villages of longhouses. Longhouses were very big wood-frame buildings covered with elm bark. Iroquois longhouses were up to a hundred feet long, and each one housed an entire clan, sometimes as many as 60 people

6. CLOTHING Iroquois men originally didn’t wear shirts. Iroquois men wore long pants called breechcloths. They had long leggings Iroquois women wore wraparound skirts with shorter leggings. Women wore a tunic called an overdress. Iroquois people also wore shoes called moccasins.

7. JOBS Iroquois men were in charge of hunting, trading and war. Iroquois women were in charge of planting, harvesting, making dolls, and making clothes. The major crops planted by the Iroquois were the Three Sisters – corn, squash, and beans.

8. MEDICINE Only Iroquois men served as Medicine Men. They wore a special mask, knelt down beside the sick person and sprinkled tobacco on the sick persons face. It was believed that the mask would frighten the evil spirits that caused the person to be sick.
