His chosen people, who keep His
commandments. He is leading, not stray
offshoots, not one here and one there, but
a people.

 Strive to Be Among the 144,000.--[Revelation 7:9-17 quoted.]
Those whom the Lamb shall lead by the fountains of living waters,
and from whose eyes He shall wipe away all tears, will be those
now receiving the knowledge and understanding revealed in the
Bible, the Word of God. . . . We may behold Christ to good
purpose. We may safely look to Him; for He is all-wise. As we look
to Him and think of Him, He will be formed within, the hope of
glory. Let us strive with all the power that God has given us to be
among the hundred and forty-four thousand (RH March 9, 1905).

Ellen White on 144,000

 Christ says that there will be those in the church who
will present fables and suppositions, when God has
given grand, elevating, ennobling truths which should
ever be kept in the treasure house of the mind. When
men pick up this theory and that theory, when they are
curious to know something it is not necessary for them
to know, God is not leading them. It is not His plan
that His people shall present something which they
have to suppose, which is not taught in the Word. It is
not His will that they shall get into controversy over
questions which will not help them spiritually, such as,
Who is to compose the hundred and forty-four
thousand? This those who are the elect of God will in a
short time know without question. {1SM 174.3


 Sister E.G. White was doubtless far more acquainted
with this subject than any one living at this time, for
she wrote much about them and had visions of them.
There is no doubt that she, too, spent much time in
searching both from the Bible and her own writings,
but she has failed to point out the exact company by
assembling the references together, and clear the
mystery.

If evidence can be brought to view that
the 144,000 (in number) lived before the
seventh-plague, then we have positive
proof that the 144,000 never died.

EGW answer: “Oh yes, those who have
died in the faith will be among the
144,000. I am clear on that matter.

 I saw that she (Hastings) was sealed and would
come up at the voice of God and stand upon the
earth, and would be with the 144,000. I saw we need
not mourn for her; she would rest in the time of
trouble, and all that we could mourn for was our loss
in being deprived of her company. I saw her death
would result in good.

 If Class 2 (the great multitude), were the saved and
resurrected from all ages, then all of the saved must
have palms in their hands, but as it is plain that not all
have the palms, then these are not all the saved in all
ages, but are the translated ones only, besides the
144,000. The palm is a symbol of victory over death
and the grave; that is, they never died. Shepherd's
Rod book, Vol. 1 43-44.

 The cases of all who are sealed from 1929 to the final close of
probation will be investigated before the throne in the
heavenly sanctuary while living. The investigation
commences after the fulfillment of Ezekiel 9. Those who are
sealed from 1929 to the fulfillment of Ezekiel 9 (close of
probation for the church), are living saints, 144,000 in
number, who shall never die -- translated without tasting
death.

 That time of trouble is before any of the sleeping
saints are resurrected, therefore the 144,000 are not
resurrected, but are living saints who have never
tasted death and are to be translated at the second
coming of Christ.

we were traveling along, we met a company who were
also gazing at the glories of the place. I noticed red as a
border on their garments; their crowns were brilliant;
their robes were pure white. As we greeted them, I
asked Jesus who they were. He said they were
martyrs that had been slain for Him. With them was
an innumerable company of little ones; they had a hem
of red on their garments also. 1T 68, 69.

solitary man here and another there as the only
ones worthy to be entrusted with His truth. He
does not give one man new light contrary to the
established faith of the body. In every reform men
have arisen making this claim. . . . Let none be self-
confident, as though God had given them special

Warning from EGW


 There are a thousand temptations in disguise prepared for
those who have the light of truth; and the only safety for any
of us is in receiving no new doctrine, no new interpretation
of the Scriptures, without first submitting it to brethren of
experience. Lay it before them in a humble, teachable spirit,
with earnest prayer; and if they see no light in it, yield to
their judgment; for "in the multitude of counselors there is
safety."--Testimonies, Vol. 5, pp. 291-293. (1885.) {CW 47.1}

said that what God has led us into is either all
truth or not truth.”

 Other ministers, singly and in groups, thereafter examined
Mr. Houteff's views and found them unsound.
Nevertheless, in response to his clamor for another hearing,
the Pacific Union Conference arranged with the General
Conference for a committee of 12 able and experienced
ministers to meet in Los Angeles in February, 1934, with
Arthur G. Daniells presiding, to hear him explain his
peculiar doctrines as fully as he desire. In its published
report that committee said:

Why David
a Type?


 …and who was largely responsible for the early
experience of David’s life, is a type of the church
leadership in the period preceding the Loud cry-the
leadership which was raised up in 1844, and for the
sole purpose of gathering the 144,000, the first fruits
of the kingdom. In each case, type perfectly matches
antitype.

General Destruction of
the Wicked
 These, unless they repent, and leave the work of Satan in
oppressing those who have the burden of the work, and in holding
up the hands of sinners in Zion, will never receive the mark of
God's sealing approval. They will fall in the general
destruction of all the wicked, represented by the five men
bearing slaughter weapons. Mark this point with care; those who
receive the pure mark of truth, wrought in them by the power of
the Holy Ghost, represented by the man in linen, are those "that
sigh and cry for all the abominations that are done" in the church.
Their love for purity and the honor and glory of God is such, and
they have so clear a view of the exceeding sinfulness of sin, that
they are represented as being in an agony, even sighing and crying.

General Destruction of
the Wicked
 But the general slaughter of all those who do not thus
see the wide contrast between sin and righteousness, and
do not feel as those do who stand in the counsel of God
and receive the mark, is described in the order to the five
men with slaughter weapons: "Go ye after him through
the city, and smite; let not your eye spare, neither have ye
pity; slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little
children, and women; but come not near any man upon
whom is the mark; and begin at my sanctuary." {RH, June
8, 1886 par. 3}


The Lord has sent messages of warning and entreaty,
messages of reproof and rebuke, and they have not
been in vain. But we have never had a message that
the Lord would disorganize the church. We have
never had the prophecy concerning Babylon applied to the
Seventh-day Adventist Church, or been informed that
the "loud cry" consisted in calling God's people to
come out of her; for this is not God's plan concerning


 The Lord has declared that the history of the past
shall be rehearsed as we enter upon the closing
work. Every truth that He has given for these last
days is to be proclaimed to the world. Every pillar
that He has established is to be strengthened. We
cannot now step off the foundation that God has
established. We cannot now enter into any new
organization; for this would mean apostasy from the
truth. {20MR 151.1}


Had the church as a body, or at least the
leaders of the Seventh-day Adventist
denomination accepted the message of
reform as presented to them in "The
Shepherd's Rod," Vol. 1, there would be no
necessity for that class to fall by the figure of
the five men with the slaughter weapons.

 He who presides over His church and the destinies of nations
is carrying forward the last work to be accomplished for this
world. To His angels He gives the commission to execute His
judgments. Let the ministers awake, let them take in the
situation. The work of judgment begins at the sanctuary.
"And, behold, six men came from the way of the higher gate,
which lieth toward the north, and every man a slaughter
weapon in his hand; and one man among them was clothed
with linen, with a writer's inkhorn by his side: and they went
in, and stood beside the brazen altar…"

 …Read Ezekiel 9:2-7. The command is, "Slay utterly old
and young, both maids, and little children, and women:
but come not near any man upon whom is the mark; and
begin at My sanctuary. Then they began at the ancient
men which were before the house." Saith God, "I will
recompense their way upon their head." The words will
soon be spoken, "Go your ways, and pour out the vials of
the wrath of God upon the earth." {TM 431,432. 3, 1}


 “A noise shall come even to the ends of the earth; for the Lord hath a
controversy with the nations: he will plead with all flesh; he will give them
that are wicked to the sword.” [Jeremiah 25:31.] For six thousand years the
great controversy has been in progress; the Son of God and his heavenly
messengers have been in conflict with the power of the evil one, to warn,
enlighten, and save the children of men. Now all have made their decision; the
wicked have fully united with Satan in his warfare against God. The time
has come for God to vindicate the authority of his downtrodden law. Now the
controversy is not alone with Satan, but with men. “The Lord hath a
controversy with the nations;” “he will give them that are wicked to the
sword…” {GC88 656.1}

 …The mark of deliverance has been set upon those “that sigh and
that cry for all the abominations that be done.” Now the angel of
death goes forth, represented in Ezekiel's vision by the men with
the slaughtering weapons, to whom the command is given: “Slay
utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and women;
but come not near any man upon whom is the mark; and begin at
my sanctuary.” Says the prophet, “They began at the ancient men
which were before the house.” [Ezekiel 9:1-6.] The work of
destruction begins among those who have professed to be the
spiritual guardians of the people. The false watchmen are the
first to fall. There are none to pity or to spare. Men, women,
maidens, and little children perish together. {GC88 656.2}

iniquity; the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.”
[Isaiah 26:21.] “And this shall be the plague wherewith the Lord will smite all the
people that have fought against Jerusalem: Their flesh shall consume away while
they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and
their tongue shall consume away in their mouth. And it shall come to pass in that
day that a great tumult from the Lord shall be among them; and they shall lay hold
every one on the hand of his neighbor, and his hand shall rise up against the hand
of his neighbor.” [Zechariah 14:12, 13.] In the mad strife of their own fierce passions,
and by the awful outpouring of God's unmingled wrath, fall the wicked
inhabitants of the earth,—priests, rulers, and people, rich and poor, high and low.

 In harmony with the above counsel of the Spirit of prophecy, the
"Union Conference Committee appointed the following brethren to
give Mr, Houteff the hearing he asked for: Glenn Calkins, A. G.
Danielis, J. E* Fulton, (Otto Graf took Elder Fulton’s place) G. A..
Roberts, C. S. Prout, F« C. Gilbert, J. A. Burden, H. M. S, Richards,
W, M. Adams, C. M. Sorenson, W. G. Wii’th, J. C. Stevens," who
gave him a quiet, respectful hearing "in the Hoover Street
Tabernacle at 10:00 A. M., Monday, February 19, 1934." Serious
errors were found in Mr. Houteff*s (leader of the Shepherd’s Rod
movement) teachings. He was answered and his message was
rejected.—W. M. A.)

 "It will be found that those who bear false messages will not have a high
sense of honor and integrity. They will deceive the people, and mix up
with their error the Testimonies* of Sister White, and use her name to
give influence to their work. They make such selections from the *
Testimonies* as they think they can twist to support their positions, and
place them in a setting of falsehood, so that their error may have weight,
and be accepted by the people. They misinterpret and misapply that
which God has given to the church to warn, counsel, reprove, comfort,
and encourage those who shall make up the remnant people of God,"—
