An introduction to
Phantom/Standby Power
What is Phantom/Standby Power ?

Power drawn by a device when not in use or standby while plugged in.

                  Causes:

                  • 5 – 10% of residential electricity in most countries
                  • 1% of global CO2 emissions

Almost every electronic devices consumes Phantom
                                                     power.

                          when required.

                      • A LAN card has been integrated into the SPARA module , which detects for any print

                      • In the case of USB printer, a USB interface card is used which detects for a print

                      • The printer can be scheduled so that it remains ON during peak hours and can switch to

                 HOW ?
Runtime Losses and Standby Power
                                                       The Biggest Culprit

       Runtime Losses:
      Takes place due to

    Standby Power Losses:
Occurs when devices are left ON

               Calculations shows that about 30%
of electricity is wasted per year per
                 computer due to Runtime and

  • 36. Runtime Losses and Standby Power The Biggest Culprit Runtime Losses: Takes place due to negligence of employees. Standby Power Losses: Occurs when devices are left ON For example when employees go for at the end of the day. lunch, they usually do not turn off their computers which results in power loss of up to 100 Watts/Hr/computer. Similarly a majority of employees do not switch OFF their system once the computer is shut down resulting in Standby Losses up to 10 Watts/Hr/Computer. Calculations shows that about 30% of electricity is wasted per year per computer due to Runtime and Standby Power Losses.

  1. There are two factors in Electricity billThat can be controlled : Avoid wastage of electricity by turning off the monitor or the system when not in use. That cannot be controlled : The power that is utilized for actual work. Can we save this unused energy and ultimately go GREEN? And IF yes then HOW?
