SCOPE AND
IMPORTANCE OF
FLORICULTURE
There are many reasons to cultivate
floriculture, including to:
Decorate homes and offices - brighten up gardens - create
attractive landscaping - provide cut flowers for special
occasions - fill empty spaces in public places - add color and
interest to public parks and gardens - and many more!
To produce flowers for cutting -To produce potted
plants -To create floral arrangements -To decorate
homes and offices -To provide environmental benefits,
such as pollination and beautification
Gardens are admired as lungs of city
All ceremonies & functions (Birth & death) invariably have flowers r ornamental plants
Give lot of employment opportunities Nurseries, Propagation, pot plant rentals
World floriculture is 20 - 40 billion dollar industry. Globally, more than 145 countries
cultivating ornamental crops.
Non - traditional countries like India, China, Vietnam, Guatemala, Poland, and Sri Lanka
are emerging very fast in floriculture
.
It is increasing by 10 -15 % every year (a remarkable growth).
Importance of gardening
Relaxing & resting after day of hard work [ peace of mind]
Lungs of cities [They purify the environment, they take CO2]
They are also used for places of education.
They are also used for playing & provide colourful flowers that attract
birds, butterflies in the Garden
They generate good thoughts in mind and good health
The business of the tree check the noise pollution, smoke, air dust
pollution.
Importance of ornamental plants
1. Aesthetic gratification:
It makes our mind fresh after a day’s hard
work and gives pleasure to our minds.
2. Employment opportunity:
Comparatively, more workers are required in
ornamental plant production. So there
creates a scope of utilization of excess labor.
3. Beautification:
Ornamental plants increase the beauty of
homes, offices, gardens, and many other
institutions.
4. For export growth:
We can earn a lot of foreign exchange by
exporting ornamental plants, flowers, etc., to
the developed countries.
5. In the poultry feed industry:
Marigold flower is processed to use as
feed for poultry birds.
6. Cosmetics and perfume:
Ornamental flowers are used in the
cosmetic, perfume, and scent
industries and the food industry.
7. Medicinal Importance:
Ornamental plant parts such as –
root, leaf, seed, etc., are used for
medicinal purposes.
8. Contribution to the national
economy:
Ornamental plants are as exporting to the
foreign country can help as economic
development of the country.
9. General decoration:
Ornamental plants are used as decoration
materials in birthdays, marriages,
ceremonies, reception, get together, and
farewells.

scope of Ornamental Horticulture:
1. Perfume industry:
The cultivation of rose and jasmine is in the
perfumery industry. Their need in perfumery
trade in the cosmetic market and the food
industry is continuously growing.
2. Cut flower: However, several improved
cultivars have developed from Rose, Cosmos,
Gladiolus, Chrysanthemum’s point of view. The
demand for cut flowers is increasing
remarkably in the developed countries. For
sample, Germany which is the biggest
consumer and importer of cut flower.
3. Proper use of wasteland:
In our country around our houses, colleges, road, etc.,
there is a large area of wasteland, these lands are
suitable to make ornamental plants if we take a little
care, there is a great scope to make this garden.
4. Solution to unemployment problem:
Comparatively, more workers are required in
ornamental plant production. So there creates a
scope of utilizing excess labor that may lead to our
unemployment problem.
5. Growth and development of new industry:
Many flowers are seasonal, so all of the flowers are not found throughout
the year. Therefore to make available all sorts of flowers throughout the
year, the flower processing industry is developed in advanced countries.
Recently in our country, processing flowers is getting motion.
