What is Food?
Food is:
 Food is a conduit for nutrients
 Food is any material that supports growth, repair and maintenance of the
body.
 Any edible substance that we consume to fulfill our daily requirement of
nutrition is known as food.
 All nutrients needed by the body are available through foods
 What food does in the body doe through the nutrients to grow and keep
healthy and strong.
Importance of Food
 A food is something that provides nutrients. Nutrients are substances
that provide, energy for activity, growth and all functions of the body
such as breathing, digesting food, and keep warm, materials for growth
and repair of the body, and for keeping the immune system healthy.
 Carbohydrates
 Fats
 Vitamin B
EXAMPLE OF FOODS:
Effect of eating vegetable and
fruit
 A diet in vegetables and fruits can lower blood
pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease and
stroke, prevent some types of cancer, lower risk
of eye and digestive problems, and have a
positive effect upon blood sugar, which can help
keep appetite in check.
5 Major Food Groups
 Vegetables and legumes of beans
 Fruit
 Lean meats and poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts and seeds, legumes or
beans
 Grean (cereal) foods, mostly wholegrain or high cereal fib varieties.
 Milk, yoghurt, cheese or alternatives, mostly reduced fat.
SEVEN TYPES OF FOOD
Food are divided into 7 different group, we
have drinks, carbs, fruit and vegetable, diary,
meat / fish / eggs ,fats and high sugar foods.
Each of these groups provided different
nutrients and should be consumed at a
different rate.
EXAMPLE:
TRADITIONAL FOOD
Traditional foods are foods and dishes that are
passed on though generations or which have been
consumed for many generations. Traditional foods
and dishes are traditional in nature, and may have
a historic precedent in a national dish, regional or
local cuisine.
