Introduction to Research Methodology
Prof. Asokan R.
Research and Development Incharge
KINS, KIIT (DU), Bhubaneswar.
Process of solving problems and resolving previously unanswered
questions.
This is done by careful consideration or examination of a subject
or occurrence.
Research is a way of thinking: examining critically the various
aspects of your day-to-day professional work;
understanding and formulating guiding principles that govern a
particular procedure;
and developing and testing new theories that contribute to the
advancement of your practice and profession.
It is a habit of questioning what you do, and a systematic
examination of clinical observations to explain and find answers for
what you perceive, with a view to instituting appropriate changes for a
more effective professional service.
What makes people to undertake research?
1. Desire to get a research degree along with its consequential
benefits;
2. Desire to face the challenge in solving the unsolved problems, i.e.,
concern over practical problems initiates research;
3. Desire to get intellectual joy of doing some creative work;
4. Desire to be of service to society;
5. Desire to get respectability.
Doubt is often better than overconfidence,
for it leads to inquiry,
and inquiry leads to invention”
Research simply seeks the answer of certain questions which have not
been answered so far and the answers depend upon human efforts.
Example of the moon.
Some years ago man did not know what exactly the moon is?
Was this problem which had no solution?
Man could only make some assumptions about it
But Now!!!
But the question arises,
“Is the answer of the question in examination also research”?
The answer is ‘no’,
Because the answers of these questions are available. They are
available in text-books, class-notes etc.
Research answers only those questions of which the answers are
not available in literature i.e., in human knowledge.
Thus, we can say research seeks the answer only of those
questions of which the answers can be given on the basis of available
facilities.
Research Methods
versus
Research Methodology
Many times we had the questions/Doubts in the Nursing practice
But
answer
• Few will try to find/get answer
• Ignore
• Workload pressure
• No time
• Not care about the questions
• Continuing the machinery work everyday
• Not focusing/observing
• No interest to learn new
Front-line service provider, supervisor or health administrator/planner.
• How many patients do I see every day?
• What are some of the most common conditions prevalent among
my patients?
• What are the causes of these conditions?
• Why do some people have a particular condition whereas others
do not?
• What are the health needs of the community?
• How do I demonstrate the effectiveness of my service?
• Why do some people use the service while others do not?
• What do people think about the service?
• How effective is the service?
• How can the service be improved?
Psychologist, counsellor or social worker.
• What are my clients’ most common presenting problems?
• What is the socioeconomic background of my clients?
• Why am I successful in certain cases and not in others?
• What resources are available in the community to help a client with a
particular need?
• What intervention strategies are appropriate for this problem?
• How satisfied are my clients with my services?
As a professional you might be interested in finding answers to
theoretical questions, such as:
• Which is the most effective intervention for a particular problem?
• What causes X or what are the effects of Y?
• What is the relationship between two phenomena?
• How do I measure the self-esteem of my clients?
• How do I ascertain the validity of my questionnaire?
• Which is the best way of finding out community attitudes towards an issue?
• Which is the best way to find out the effectiveness of a particular treatment?
Research: a way to gather evidence for your practice
Evidence-based practice (EBP)
Professionals and other decision-makers to use evidence regarding
the effectiveness of an intervention & determine the appropriateness of an
intervention when providing a service to a client.
In this age of accountability, you as a professional must be
accountable to your clients as well as your profession.
Applications of research
Every profession uses research methods in varying amounts in
many areas.
To increase understanding in their own profession and to advance
the professional knowledge base.
The validity of your findings entirely depends upon the
soundness of the research methods and procedures adopted by you.
The application of research can be viewed from four different
perspectives:
1. The service provider;
2. The service administrator, manager and/or planner;
3. The service consumer; and
4. The professional.
Research: what does it mean?
There are several ways of obtaining answers to professional questions.
Research is one of the ways to find answers to questions.
When you say that you are undertaking a research study to find out
answers to a question.
• 1. is being undertaken within a framework of a set of philosophies;
• 2. uses procedures, methods and techniques that have been tested for their validity
and reliability;
• 3. is designed to be unbiased and objective.
As beginners in research you should understand that research is
not all technical, complex, statistics and computers.
It can be a very simple activity designed to provide answers to
very simple questions relating to day-to-day activities.
The difference between research and non-research activity is,
in the way we find answers to our research questions.
What is Research?
Grinnell :
‘Research is a
structured inquiry that utilises
acceptable scientific methodology to
solve problems and creates new
knowledge that is generally
applicable.’
But to qualify as research?
The process must have certain characteristics:
• Controlled - study in a way that minimize the effects of other
factors affecting the relationship.
• Rigorous – procedures followed to find answers to questions are
relevant, appropriate and justified.
• Systematic – investigation follow a certain logical sequence.
• Valid and verifiable – whatever you conclude on the basis of your
findings is correct and can be verified by you and others.
• Empirical – any conclusions drawn are based upon hard evidence
gathered from information collected from real-life experiences or
observations.
• Critical – The process of investigation must be foolproof and free
from any drawbacks.
Types of research
• Pure research and applied research - developing a sampling
technique & to find solutions to practical problems.
• Descriptive - to describe what is prevalent with respect to the
issue/problem under study.
• correlational study - discover or establish the existence of a
relationship/association/interdependence between two or more aspects
of a situation.
What is the relationship between stressful living and the incidence
of heart attack?
• Explanatory research - to clarify why and how there is a relationship
between two aspects of a situation or phenomenon.
why stressful living results in heart attacks;
• Exploratory Research - to explore an area where little is known or to
investigate the possibilities of undertaking a particular research study.
When a study is carried out to determine its feasibility it is also
called a feasibility study or a pilot study.
The structured approach to enquiry is usually classified as quantitative research
and unstructured as qualitative research.
The choice between quantitative and qualitative approaches (or structured or
unstructured) should depend upon:
• Aim of your enquiry – exploration, confirmation or quantification.
• Use of the findings – policy formulation or process understanding.
As both qualitative and quantitative approaches have their strengths and
weaknesses, and advantages and disadvantages, ‘neither one is markedly superior to
the other in all respects’
• In many studies you need to combine both qualitative and quantitative approaches.

Introduction to Research Methodology.pptx

  • 1. Introduction to Research Methodology Prof. Asokan R. Research and Development Incharge KINS, KIIT (DU), Bhubaneswar.
  • 2. Process of solving problems and resolving previously unanswered questions. This is done by careful consideration or examination of a subject or occurrence.
  • 3. Research is a way of thinking: examining critically the various aspects of your day-to-day professional work; understanding and formulating guiding principles that govern a particular procedure; and developing and testing new theories that contribute to the advancement of your practice and profession.
  • 4. It is a habit of questioning what you do, and a systematic examination of clinical observations to explain and find answers for what you perceive, with a view to instituting appropriate changes for a more effective professional service.
  • 5. What makes people to undertake research?
  • 6. 1. Desire to get a research degree along with its consequential benefits; 2. Desire to face the challenge in solving the unsolved problems, i.e., concern over practical problems initiates research; 3. Desire to get intellectual joy of doing some creative work; 4. Desire to be of service to society; 5. Desire to get respectability.
  • 7. Doubt is often better than overconfidence, for it leads to inquiry, and inquiry leads to invention”
  • 8. Research simply seeks the answer of certain questions which have not been answered so far and the answers depend upon human efforts. Example of the moon. Some years ago man did not know what exactly the moon is? Was this problem which had no solution? Man could only make some assumptions about it
  • 10. But the question arises, “Is the answer of the question in examination also research”?
  • 11. The answer is ‘no’,
  • 12. Because the answers of these questions are available. They are available in text-books, class-notes etc. Research answers only those questions of which the answers are not available in literature i.e., in human knowledge. Thus, we can say research seeks the answer only of those questions of which the answers can be given on the basis of available facilities.

  • 15.
  • 16. Many times we had the questions/Doubts in the Nursing practice But answer
  • 17. • Few will try to find/get answer • Ignore • Workload pressure • No time • Not care about the questions • Continuing the machinery work everyday • Not focusing/observing • No interest to learn new
  • 18. Front-line service provider, supervisor or health administrator/planner. • How many patients do I see every day? • What are some of the most common conditions prevalent among my patients? • What are the causes of these conditions? • Why do some people have a particular condition whereas others do not? • What are the health needs of the community?
  • 19. • How do I demonstrate the effectiveness of my service? • Why do some people use the service while others do not? • What do people think about the service? • How effective is the service? • How can the service be improved?
  • 20. Psychologist, counsellor or social worker. • What are my clients’ most common presenting problems? • What is the socioeconomic background of my clients? • Why am I successful in certain cases and not in others? • What resources are available in the community to help a client with a particular need? • What intervention strategies are appropriate for this problem? • How satisfied are my clients with my services?
  • 21. As a professional you might be interested in finding answers to theoretical questions, such as: • Which is the most effective intervention for a particular problem? • What causes X or what are the effects of Y? • What is the relationship between two phenomena? • How do I measure the self-esteem of my clients? • How do I ascertain the validity of my questionnaire? • Which is the best way of finding out community attitudes towards an issue? • Which is the best way to find out the effectiveness of a particular treatment?
  • 22. Research: a way to gather evidence for your practice Evidence-based practice (EBP) Professionals and other decision-makers to use evidence regarding the effectiveness of an intervention & determine the appropriateness of an intervention when providing a service to a client. In this age of accountability, you as a professional must be accountable to your clients as well as your profession.
  • 23. Applications of research Every profession uses research methods in varying amounts in many areas. To increase understanding in their own profession and to advance the professional knowledge base. The validity of your findings entirely depends upon the soundness of the research methods and procedures adopted by you.
  • 24. The application of research can be viewed from four different perspectives: 1. The service provider; 2. The service administrator, manager and/or planner; 3. The service consumer; and 4. The professional.
  • 25. Research: what does it mean? There are several ways of obtaining answers to professional questions. Research is one of the ways to find answers to questions. When you say that you are undertaking a research study to find out answers to a question. • 1. is being undertaken within a framework of a set of philosophies; • 2. uses procedures, methods and techniques that have been tested for their validity and reliability; • 3. is designed to be unbiased and objective.
  • 26. As beginners in research you should understand that research is not all technical, complex, statistics and computers. It can be a very simple activity designed to provide answers to very simple questions relating to day-to-day activities. The difference between research and non-research activity is, in the way we find answers to our research questions.
  • 28. Grinnell : ‘Research is a structured inquiry that utilises acceptable scientific methodology to solve problems and creates new knowledge that is generally applicable.’
  • 29. But to qualify as research?
  • 30. The process must have certain characteristics: • Controlled - study in a way that minimize the effects of other factors affecting the relationship. • Rigorous – procedures followed to find answers to questions are relevant, appropriate and justified. • Systematic – investigation follow a certain logical sequence.
  • 31. • Valid and verifiable – whatever you conclude on the basis of your findings is correct and can be verified by you and others. • Empirical – any conclusions drawn are based upon hard evidence gathered from information collected from real-life experiences or observations. • Critical – The process of investigation must be foolproof and free from any drawbacks.
  • 33. • Pure research and applied research - developing a sampling technique & to find solutions to practical problems. • Descriptive - to describe what is prevalent with respect to the issue/problem under study. • correlational study - discover or establish the existence of a relationship/association/interdependence between two or more aspects of a situation. What is the relationship between stressful living and the incidence of heart attack?
  • 34. • Explanatory research - to clarify why and how there is a relationship between two aspects of a situation or phenomenon. why stressful living results in heart attacks; • Exploratory Research - to explore an area where little is known or to investigate the possibilities of undertaking a particular research study. When a study is carried out to determine its feasibility it is also called a feasibility study or a pilot study.
  • 35. The structured approach to enquiry is usually classified as quantitative research and unstructured as qualitative research. The choice between quantitative and qualitative approaches (or structured or unstructured) should depend upon: • Aim of your enquiry – exploration, confirmation or quantification. • Use of the findings – policy formulation or process understanding. As both qualitative and quantitative approaches have their strengths and weaknesses, and advantages and disadvantages, ‘neither one is markedly superior to the other in all respects’ • In many studies you need to combine both qualitative and quantitative approaches.
