In “Lionfish Invasion!” (p. 14), you learned about an invasive species in the Atlantic Ocean. Lionfish are only one of many
invaders that are causing problems in ecosystems around the world. The table below shows the 10 areas with the highest
numbers of known invasive species. Use the data along with information from the article to answer the questions that follow.

invasive species?
2. Name two areas that may share some of the same

worldwide. Is this equal to the sum of the number of
invasive species found in every area? Explain why
or why not.
4. How would you expect the number of invasive species
in an area to affect the number of other species there? Use
evidence from the article to support your answer.

The United States has roughly 194 more invasive
species than New Zealand.
No, because when I added up all the invasive species in all
locations together, I got a sum of 2,111 invasive species.
Although, this is just several locations, and if it were wordwide, it would
be a much larger number. Adding on, it would mean that it would go
beyond 1,517 invasive species, which proves that it doesn't equal it.
Two areas that may share some of the same invasive species
include Australia and New Zealand. This is because comparing
the invasive species numbers, they have a close number.
New Zealand has 329 invasive species and Australia has
322 invasive species. Also, both Australia and New Zealand
are close together location wise, which means that they have
very similar animals and predators.
Invasive species can affect the number of other species there
because invasive species are capable of causing extinctions. This
includes extinction of plants and animals, fighting with organisms for
limited resources, and invading the species habitats. If there were a
large number in Australia, the invasive species can impact the
species by taking over many of their survival resources, which is
extremely significant to consider.
