Spring/Summer 2014
NCE Workshop 2014
The annual NCE Preparation Workshop was
held on Saturday, March 8th. The event was an all
day class intended to prepare students who are
studying for comps and the NCE.
Speakers were Argosy doctoral students
who were CSI members and nationally certified
counselors. Speakers provided a thorough review
of information needed for the exam. They shared
experiences and study tips with students, and
answered questions and concerns related to the
exam.
This year, there were a total of 20 students
in attendance. This event is our chapter’s largest
fundraiser, and we made nearly $1000 to be given
back to students through sponsored workshops,
receptions, scholarships, and awards. We
appreciate the feedback from the attendees, which
was overwhelmingly positive, and we will continue
to work to improve this event each year.
A special thank you from CSI to Vanessa
Teixeira, Lenese Stephens, Taisha Laurent,
Vickie Hagan, Thomas Valayathil and Hope
Saadat, who were speakers at the event. We
appreciate your service to our chapter!

CSI Membership Updates
Perspectives on Private Practice by Avneet Deo
Due to high student interest in private practice opportunities, we here at Chi Sigma Iota decided to
interview Dr. Eric Bravo who has his own private practice in Gaithersburg, MD, and Dr. Jennifer Carney, a
counseling faculty member with private practice experience in McLean, VA. Dr. Bravo received his
Bachelor’s in Psychology from the University of Maryland. Dr. Bravo is a former student of Argosy University
in the PsyD program and he has extensive experience in substance abuse and addictions. His advice to students
interested in working with addictions is to keep in mind that it is a complex field and that it is important to
always be there for your client and to work in a collaborative manner. Dr. Bravo added that clients usually
don’t care about your degree or how much you know; rather they want to know how much you care for them.
Dr. Bravo makes frequent use of motivational interviewing with his clients facing addictions and he prefers
using different integrated styles of therapy in their treatment custom tailored to fit each individual client’s
needs. He dispelled some myths about alcohol addiction one being that alcoholics are bad people and can
control their dinking. Dr. Bravo advises us future counselors and clinicians to be careful about any such pre-
suppositions or biases we ourselves may have as they may lead to transference. It is critical to understand
alcohol addiction from the perspective of the person with addiction if we are to truly assist them.
Aside from conversation about alcohol addiction, Dr. Bravo also shed some light on the dreams of
many students here at Argosy of opening up their own private practice one day. He recommends working in
group settings first in order to get hands on experience and to work closely with someone who can show us the
ropes of billing, insurance, organizational structure etc. if we want to open up our own practice. Dr. Carney
agrees, and adds that it is important for counselors to be licensed first, and have several years’ experience
before attempting to go into business for ourselves. It can take several months for practices to become
profitable and so it is helpful to have sources of referrals and prior connections in the community. Dr. Carney,
who specializes in working with individuals who have body image and eating disorder concerns, believes that
advertising your counseling specialties and past clinical experiences will help attract clients to your practice.
You can learn more about Dr. Bravo and his practice by visiting http://www.ericbravopsychologist.com/. You
can learn more about Dr. Carney by emailing or knocking on her door on the 7th floor at Argosy.
CSI Letters of Invitation: Letters will be out by May 15th , so keep an eye on your student mailbox,
located in the student lounge on the 7th floor. Letters will also be emailed to student Argosy email
addresses. Eligible students must be in the MACC or CES programs, have obtained a 3.5 GPA, be
12 credits into their program, and have a faculty endorsement. Contact Lenese Stephens or Dr.
Carney with any questions. We look forward to welcoming all of our new members at our
Induction Ceremony this fall!

ACA Conference 2014: Honolulu, Hawaii
A Snapshot from CSI Scholarship Recipient Lenese Stephens
The 2014 ACA conference was held in the beautiful island of Honolulu, Hawaii. This was my first experience on two
levels, first at attending the counseling conference and first at experiencing Hawaii. This conference was beautifully
located for counselors and educators to seize the opportunity of self-care. I was a volunteer worker for the ACA
conference and this opportunity was a great way to be involved in the conference, network and see the variety of
educational sessions. The conference speakers included Cloe' Madanes who is widely known of her work with
strategic family approaches. Her message was clearly to think out of the box when working with clients and their
families. She used personal counseling sessions of her family client to support her message, along with some much
needed laughter! Morgan Spurlock, an academy award nominated director famously known for his documentary
"Supersize Me" and the FX network series,"28 days". Mr. Spurlock discussed his history of being raised by an
educator/counselor...his mother! Many of the lessons he's learned about himself are the basic foundations of
counseling and overall self care,he stressed the main concept of trusting yourself no matter what you are trying to
accomplish if you succeed or fail, its the best way to learn and grow.
Being a volunteer is something I will consider for the future conferences (2015 to be held in Orlando, FL). Being a
volunteer is hard work but the major networking of students (CSI students) from various programs throughout the
United States is amazing to experience. Outside of volunteering I was able to attend some educational sessions to
include topics on career counseling, counseling within detention settings, counseling stigmas amongst African
American males and First Aid to trauma presented by Drs. Stephanie Dailey and Carmen Gill (Argosy professors).
The information has been very useful for me to return and use the variety of interventions with the adolescent males I
work with in a detention setting.
For any persons wanting to participate in the conference as a volunteer, please visit the ACA's website
(www.counseling.org) and select the option for ACA conference 2015 and then look for graduate volunteer. Hope to
see some of the CSI members at the 2015 ACA conference in Orlando, FL.
The CSI awards committee provides monetary stipends for students to attend and present at professional
conferences. If you are interested in applying for one, please contact Dr. Carney
