3. What is the American Dream?
• The American Dream is rooted in the declaration of Independence,
which proclaims that “all men are equal’ with the right to “ life,
liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
• In the definition of the American Dream by James Truslow Adams
in 1931, “life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone,
with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement,”
regardless of social class or circumstances of birth.
• The American Dream is national ethos of the United States, the set
of ideals (democracy, rights, liberty, opportunity and equality) in
which freedom includes the opportunity for prosperity and success
and in upward social mobility for the family and children achieved
through hard work in a society with few barriers.

7. Important of the Dream in The Old Man and The
Sea
• Throughout The Old Man and the Sea, Hemingway compares and
contrasts youth to old age.
• When Santiago dreams of lions, he is remembering his youth: the
time in his life when he was strong, virile, and capable. Santiago’s
dreams of lions also reveal his feelings about old age. He looks
back with recognition of the boy he once was: the boy who revered
and respected the lions at play on the beach.

9. Dreams in the Novel
• The setting for the story is simple: an old fisherman, Santiago, prepares for
and then experiences a three-day fishing trip. The first night, before he sets
out on his trip, Santiago dreams of Africa.
• We can also said that in this novel American dream as a Marlin, because in
this novel establishment of dream of lion in the past sense but in the novel
Santiago’s perspective in his present situation his dream of also Marlin.
• The novella ends with Santiago in bed, resting after his three-day ordeal with
the marlin. ‘The old man was dreaming about the lions.’ is the last sentence.
10. Conclusion
• To the end of the “American Dream” has changed over the course
of course of history, and includes both personal components and a
global vision.
• The discourse of an American Dream is also used in The Old Man
and the Sea. Character of Santiago’s who has a dream as a lion or
Marlin or an African boy, but the theme of the American Dream
symbolize the Santiago has a success man, who has a, power and
ability to win a Marlin. So prosperity, success and freedom they all
are connected with the American Dream.
