- 9. Age Group In 2007 49% of bikers killed in crashes were age 40 or over. 31% of motorcycle crash fatalities occurred in the under 30-year-old . 20% of crash fatalities occurred in the 30- to 39-year-old group in 2007.
- 10. Some Other Facts 27% percent of motorcycle riders involved in fatal accidents had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) over 0.08 percent. 36% of all bikers involved in fatal crashes were speeding. 26% of bikers involved in fatal crashes were riding without a valid license.
- 11. Recent Numbers There are roughly 75% more registered motorcycles than 10 years ago. That means there is about 7,266,758 in 2009. Each motorcycle travels approximately 692 miles. Assuming the total miles traveled is at 10,500.
- 12. Continued… We expect that of the 7,266,758 registered motorcycles, 5,427 will be involved in a fatal accident in 2009. About 1,682 will be under the age of 30 group, and 454 of them were drunk. Wearing a helmet could have saved 2,008 of those 5,427 people’s lives.
- 13. Conclusion Wearing a helmet may be optional in Pennsylvania, but we would strongly suggest wearing one every time you ride. Wearing a helmet can be the difference between life and death. NHTSA estimates that motorcycle helmets reduce the likelihood of crash fatality by 37%. Helmet use has declined by 20% over five years, from 2001 to 2006. Other factors to motorcycle safety include the proper training, no speeding, and never mix alcohol and riding.
