2. Although we were unable to complete all of the extra
curricular sports programs last year, the staff and coaches at
BCHS would like to recognize our athletes for their
accomplishments during the 2019-2020 school year.
Congratulations to all of our students who played on the
various teams. Thank you for being excellent sports
ambassadors and representing our school in such a positive
way!

5. We were very fortunate to have a large golf team in 2019, I was
looking forward to building upon it again this year. We are fortunate to
have a great home course to practice on and to host Zones. For some
it was their first year competing, and it was advantageous that we
were able to host. This was an invaluable experience for them to
compete on home turf and to get this experience under their belt.
Others were old hats at it and it showed because we were fortunate
enough to win the Zone banner and a single berth to provincials. The
courses that we competed at were some tough ones in southern
Alberta, Alberta Springs Golf Course and Innisfail Golf Club. I look
forward to getting back out on the course.

In the 2019 JV girls season, this volleyball team continued to
progress and hone their abilities. The girls skills continued to
develop and by the end of the season, the group as a whole
clicked on the volleyball court and became the zone
champions. Many volleyball games throughout the season
were hard fought, but the zone championship game the girls
pooled all they had and were victorious. It was an incredible
end to the season and each athlete should be proud of what
they accomplished!

In 2019 the JV boys had a successful season. Everyone learned and
developed their skills, technique and knowledge. At several tournaments
we were able to win against much larger Edmonton school teams and
make it to the finals. Unfortunately we ran into some problems in our
zone semi final and finished with bronze medals in the zone tournament.
Overall it was a fun year and everyone enjoyed their time playing.

The senior team had a good mixture of veteran players with some very strong first
years. We played in 6 different tournaments throughout the season. In these
tournaments the team had a great opportunity to learn and compete in order to
develop for the final games of the season.
The zone tournament was held in Whitecourt where the team went through
undefeated in pool play. We crossed over and played Morinville in the semi finals
where the team won in straight sets. In the final match the team played the host
team, Hilltop and again won in straight sets to earn a gold medal and a berth into the
provincial tournament.
The provincial tournament saw the team playing some really tough matches and
unfortunately the team could not get the consistency they had the previous weekend.
The girls played well against some of the top teams in the province and were able to
compete and push these teams. All in all, the team had a positive experience and
ended their season and high school careers in a memorable and enjoyable way.

Congratulations boys on the second place finish at provincials. It was an awesome way to finish a season that proved to be
one of the most satisfying seasons as a coach here at BCHS. Between the adoption of team first philosophy and the
undeniable determination you have created for yourself, we as coaches couldn’t ask for much more – maybe just one more
set won.
Our season started much the same as the previous seasons – with lofty goals and high expectations. Again with a new crew
of motivated players to fill the shoes of the past graduates. It was their turn to be relied upon to be the starters and leaders of
the team.
The season started as usual, with wins and close losses and a balance of learning lessons that are the most valuable to all.
We had our lumps and we took them as men and developed our own identity.
Our match record prior to provincials was 40 wins and 13 loses.
During Provincials our record was 6 wins and 1 loss.
We redeemed ourselves with a magnificent win over LCI in the semi-finals – probably the best team in the tournament. Our
Gryphon team resembled a machine that wouldn’t waver under the pressure and expectations of the moment. That win will be
placed in the lore’s of our volleyball history. We bounced back from a resounding loss to LCI in the final at the Camrose
tournament. We answered that wake-up call with a complete performance.
Overall, I feel the boys wanted the gold medal – who doesn’t? But, still, a remarkable result to finish second at provincials. I
also believe there is a greater lesson in that loss even though it still hurts.
Another proud moment in time that will motivate the future players within the confines of our humble school.

Congratulations to the 2019-2020 JV Boys Basketball Team on a great season.
These young men always played with heart and class. They never gave up or got
down, even in the difficult games. They showed true sportsmanship by treating
every team they faced with respect, whether they were beating them or trailing
them. The 2019-2020 JV Boys Basketball Team ended the season by placing in
zones well above their ranking. Way to go!

Congratulations to the 2019/2020 JV Girls Basketball Team. You are awesome! All of these
young women exemplified extraordinary athleticism and sportsmanship throughout the
season. We may not have won every game, but that never stopped these ladies from putting
everything they had out on the court, and walking away with their bumps, bruises and smiles
like trophies.

The Gryphons Senior Girls Basketball team had a great season with an
abrupt end due to COVID-19. The girls had an exciting first place finish at
the Edson Tournament in January 2020 beating the home team by one
point. They placed second place in the St. Augustine Tournament in
Ponoka. The Gryphons won the consolation trophy in the Westlock
Tournament, and gained two positions in the zone ranking. The team was
ranked second going into the Zone Tournament, however, the night
before it was to start it was cancelled due to COVID-19. Congratulations
to all of the players on an excellent season!

The Senior Boys team had a slow start to their season and just as
momentum was shifting, it was suddenly cut short due to COVID 19.
Although the boys did not win many games in the beginning, they played
with grit, determination and drive to fight back. Coming back from a deficit
is a tough mental skill, which is something this team did not lack. The
highlight of the season was the last tournament when all of the pieces
came together and the boys were in control of all their games. We will
never know if this momentum would have carried forward into the Zone
Tournament!

The group worked really hard since the beginning of
November 2019 with the goal of competing at provincials in
Lethbridge. Curtis, Payton, Henry and Erika had a excellent
weekend and won silver medals.
Special thanks to Rod Phillips for coaching the curling team
for the past four years, guiding our students to many banners
and provincial medals!

24. Junior High Athletic Awards
Unfortunately, our extra-curricular sports program was interrupted this
year before we could finish out our basketball, badminton and track
programs. Teachers still wanted to recognize the outstanding athletic
talent in our junior high classes. This year, the top male and female
athletes were chosen based on their athletic participation in gym classes,
contribution to extra-curricular teams, coachability and sportsmanship.
