How can BDV Data Science Badges help in the selection of job candidates? Would your university like to issue badges that recognize data science skills?

This webinar will explain the initiative being led by the BDVe project in collaboration with the BDVA Skills Task Force to recognize data science skills acquired through formal education. The main goal of this work is to address the needs of the different stake-holders in the data science ecosystem: university students, academia and industry. This initiative is based on the use of Open Badges which are issued by universities to students that have demonstrated that they have gained data science skills which were identified as being relevant to industrial needs.

Notas

  • Good morning on behalf of the BDVe project to this webinar series. First of all, I hope all of you are doing well in these time.

Today we have the pleasure of having 2 speakers who are going to present the work done to deliver BDV Badges to recognize data science skills.

But before that, allow me to say a few words about the BDVe webinar series.
  • This webinar is part of a series where we will be inviting speakers from organizations and innovation projects to talk about their experience working with big data and AI. By the way, I take this opportunity to invite you to contact me any time in case you believe you have a topic of interest and would like to be speaker of one of our webinars.

The goal of these webinars is to show the VALUE of big data both from the TECHNICAL & BUSINESS perspectives, as well as touching topics of interest for our community, lessons learned, best practices, innovative solutions, societal debates, etc.

You can see that we have a packed agenda of webinars for the next weeks and months. Besides the BDVe series, we have the DataBench webinar next week about benchmarking big data, three workshops around personal and industrial data platforms and more workshops and panels to come related to the BDV Porto Summit that was supposed to happen in mid-May. Due to the Covid-19 we are proposing a set of virtual workshops that will be announced soon related to big data in finance, health and other verticals.

Please, if you are interested go regularly to our webinar web page and register. In this URL you will find more information about past and future webinars, as well as links to all previous recordings and slides.
  • Some housekeeping before jumping into the webinar:

As you know, due to the Covid-19 we are all relying on wifi connection. There is small chance that the connection fails during the webinar on our end. If this happens, we will resume the connection asap. So please, try to reconnect in a few minutes.

Please, write questions in the chat. Normally at the end of the presentation the speaker will answer your questions, but if you would like to ask a questions directly, please raise your hand using the tool and I will unmute you to ask the question directly.

I’m going to ask you a couple of questions to check the main interest of the audience as feedback to our speakers, and a brief survey of two questions at the end to get your feedback and recommendations.

The first question of the poll is about your profile. Please, let us know if you are from an academic or an industrial organization… I give you a few seconds to answer…. It seems…

The second and last question is related to the subject of this particular webinar. Are you interested in using some kind of common way of recognising education skills? The answers are: yes; yes, but it is not a prority; andjust interested on the topic I give you a few more seconds as well…. Apparently this is the case for X% of the audience

    Thanks for answering.
