The general methodology is based on
the comparison between real crop
behavior and the expected trends for
each crop typology.
It involves image processing, data
mining and machine learning
techniques and is based on different
categories of input data: Sentinel-2
and Landsat-8 SITS covering the time
period of interest, farmers’
declarations of intention with respect
to crops types, as well as in-situ / field
data.

Under the framework of the DataBio project,
Terrasigna ran CAP support monitoring
service trials during 2017, 2018 & 2019
for 10 000 sqkm AOI
in Southeastern Romania.
The final results are observed crop maps and
compliance maps of discrete levels of trust.
The level of trust can be expressed at pixel or
parcel level. Low levels of trust means that,
from the algorithm’s point of view, the
location (pixel or parcel) was cultivated with
a different crop than the declared one.
A high level of trust means that the observed
crop matches the declared one.

For the 2018 agricultural year, Terrasigna
monitored the CAP declarations for the
entire agricultural area of Romania.
The total surveyed area exceeds
9 milion ha, corresponding to more than
6 milion plots of various sizes and shapes.
The necessary Earth Observation (EO)
data required multiple Sentinel-2 scenes
projected in 2 UTM zones.
21% of the total number of plots within
the test areas have surfaces below 1 ha.
