4. Q: What is Project Management?
Defines the Traditional Project Management as 'a set
of techniques and tools that can be applied to an
activity that seeks an end product, outcomes, or a
service'.

6.  The Project Overview Statement is a written description of
what your customer (in this case, you and your spouse) can
expect.
 It's the document that tells others where you are going and how
you plan to "get from here to there." If you are sharing the work
with others, they can use it to guide their decisions and actions.
 In an organization, customers generally want project
information in a standardized format, which enables the
customer to focus attention immediately on the project
information without having to waste time learning new formats.
 You and your spouse may not need such a formal document.

Jack Neift have started this Company with One Truck and One

routes of New York City. The company had seen weak financial times
but because of its ability it remained one of the best companies in the
United States.

8.  Endnote is a powerful bibliographic software
program; a large percentage of faculty, staff, and
students use Endnote software to write scholarly
papers, manuscripts, grant proposals, and
abstracts.
 The program is also used as an on-line research
repository of published work. Currently, there are
one thousand licenses consisting of four different
incompatible versions of Endnote in use within the
organization.

9.  Your project goal statement should be a short,
specific definition of the ultimate deliverable or
outcome of the project. Consider the project time
frame as part of the project goal.
 Give your important stakeholders (you and your
spouse) enough information to be able to approve
the project, but don't volunteer anything that will be
impossible to deliver.
 for example, you know you can't promise to do it
before this weekend, because you will be working
out of town for your employer through Friday.

10.  Ensure software compatibility within the organization
researchers, faculty, support staff, and students.
 Enhance research collaboration. • Increase the number
of published works and grants submitted.
 Introduce students to research writing and proper
citation practices prior to graduation.
 Create a shared Endnote data library based on various
research topics.

11. A good objective should include:
 An outcome (a statement of what will be
accomplished);
 A time frame (a preliminary estimate of duration);
 A measure (metrics that will measure success); and
 An action (how the objective will be met).

12. Let's apply these standards to the following objective:
 Build a dog house. This objective doesn't give us much
useful information. How can we revise the objective to
make it more specific? We might ask
 What do you want to accomplish? (a house big enough
and warm enough for a golden retriever)
 What is your time frame? (next Saturday afternoon is
your only free time)
 What are your measures of success (you stay within your
budget ($150) and time frame, the house is big enough
for the dog, it's in the right location)
 How will you do this? (Work from the instructions on the
Web site you found)

13.  Faculty and staff will develop sharable Endnote libraries, which
would be accessible on the Intranet.
 Funding levels will increase as the number of faculty using Endnote
publish and write grant proposals.
 The number of student publication submissions increase, preparing
them for research, enhances their educational experience, and
prepares graduates to enter the field as a polished professional.
 Student grades improve based on the application and use of
formatting style (APA) a strict requirement for all courses.
 The number of graduate, fellows, doctoral, and postdoctoral students
obtaining grant funding through collaborative research with faculty
increase as students gain access to the same technology faculty
use.
 All students graduate with Endnote hands-on experience, preparing
them to teach, publish, conduct research, and write grant proposals

14.  The statement of success criteria in the project
overview statement does two things:
1. It establishes the business value (benefit) of doing a
project, and is therefore a basis for selling the project
to senior management; and
2. It tells stakeholders when the project is completed.

15.  For example, will completion of the project result in a
new product or service? Will it result in more efficient
internal systems? Will there be better customer
service? Will there be an upgrade of business
processes or computer systems? Think about how you
might measure "customer satisfaction" and "internal
efficiency"

16. "Six departments upgraded to the latest version of Microsoft Word.“
What might be some success criteria for your doghouse? How about
these?
 It should be big enough so the dog can turn around and lie down
comfortably, and so you can provide blankets or padding for the floor.
 At the same time, it should be small enough that it doesn't dominate
the back yard.
 It should be waterproof and windproof.
 It should not fall down or break when the dog leans against it.
 It should be attractive (and you and your spouse will need to decide
what your standards are for "attractiveness"!).
 It should be finished at the time and price you and your spouse
agreed on.

17.  Financial -
Software license budget need an increase of $70,000 to
cover the costs associated with current upgrades,
maintenance, and future upgrades.
 Absence of site license options, therefore each license
purchased at full retail price.
 Timing -
Risk scheduling upgrade based on varied grant submission
deadlines.
 Faculty teaching and office hour schedule varies with
desktop support staff.

18.  Communicative -
Open communication from faculty regarding changes
in research collaboration teams - critical.
 Clear ownership of shared library must be defined
prior to posting on intranet.
 Technical -
Risk incompatibility with previous versions until all
system installations are complete.
 Computers near the 4-year life cycle may require
immediate hardware upgrade to support the software
upgrade

19.  Time Frame -
Data collection will require 10 weeks; collection
includes running a query of current Endnote licenses
using asset tracking database. One week is also
required to determine current faculty collaborative
research projects including their support staff.
 Metrics -
Currently, there are 1000 licenses consisting of four
different versions of Endnote in use within the
organization. The mixed versions are installed in the
student computer labs, and private offices.

20. For students - Research Opportunities
 There are 20 current research opportunities for students to
collaborate with faculty. Making the same version of Endnote
available for students as faculty would encourage students to
apply for the current research opportunities.
Student labs:
 Upgrading all 849 student lab computers to Endnote 9.0 would
prepare students to write, research, and correctly cite sources
using required formatting styles before graduation.
 Budget -
Using a phased installation approach, and one designated IT
Software professional, the complete project will cost $80,593.
Each upgrade license cost a little over $80. One-thousand
computers in the organization require the upgrade including the
undergraduate and doctoral student computer labs.
