This document summarizes a NISO webinar on cataloging efficiency and effectiveness. It provides details on the webinar contents, speakers, and questions for discussion. The webinar included a presentation on skills and tools needed for current cataloging workflows, whether different metadata is needed for different materials, the role of automation, opportunities for value-add by providers, and improving the user experience. Attendees could participate via online slides, audio, or telephone. Recordings and slides would be made available afterwards.

6. Discussion
NISO Webinar • October 9, 2019
1. What skills and tasks are needed for cataloging/metadata
management in the current environment? What new techniques
and tools might be needed for that workflow?
2. Ought there to be different elements included in the metadata
associated with a particular item, given the broad array of material
(e-resources, print, digital objects, etc.)?
3. Should there be a greater emphasis on the use of automated
processes? How might that change the experience of user, librarian
or provider?
7. Discussion
NISO Webinar • October 9, 2019
4. What opportunities for value-add are there for service and content
providers?
5. How might these changes improve the success of the user experience?
6. Metadata, algorithms, and information systems combined together are
the means we have for supporting user search. Along with relevancy,
precision and recall have been traditional metrics for assessing the
effectiveness of a search system. In the current environment where users
have the capability to search billions of documents through a variety of
search tools and systems, how should we be thinking about online catalogs
and other discovery tools?
8. Discussion
NISO Webinar • October 9, 2019
7. What might be done to improve the transfer or exchange of metadata
across systems? ( We’re thinking specifically about transfer between
content providers and aggregators to minimize metadata loss and ensure a
better integration between systems)
8. Also, in the context of assessment, what might various stakeholders do to
improve efficiencies in reporting and comparing holdings?
9. In a proprietary system, librarians may not be able to see users’ search
queries. How can we make sure that our metadata is meeting our users’
needs without such capability?
