Connecting info by names is complicated
Of the more than 6 million authors in a major journal citations and
abstracts database,+2/3 share last name and single initial with
another author. An ambiguous name in the same database refers on
average to 8 people.

6. Uniquely identifying contributors
“The ability to uniquely identify contributors is a
deceptively simple concept which,if realised,could
enable forms of real-time understanding of
scientific research that up to now have been
extremely costly (if not impossible).”

Our vision
ORCID’s vision is a world where all who
participate in research,scholarship,and
innovation are uniquely identified and
connected to their contributions across
disciplines,borders, and time.

Persistent digital identifiers to distinguish researchers
from each other
Member-built integrations for automated links between
researchers and their activities/affiliations
A hub for machine-readable connections between
identifiers for organizations, funding, outputs, and people
ORCID provides
✔ Plumbing for research information
✔ Tools to build trust in digital information
10. orcid.org 10
ORCID collaborates with other organizations to
ensure adoption and use of research
information standards, including persistent
identifiers
Collaborating to support standards
11. Top 10 benefits for researchers
1. Reliably connects them with their contributions and affiliations
2. Alleviates mistaken identity
3. Saves time – “enter once,re-use often”
4. Improves recognition for researchers and their research outputs
5. Increases discoverability of their research outputs
6. Researchers own and control their record, managing what information is
connected and how it is shared
7. More and more systems they already use are connected with ORCID
8. Free to register and use
9. Easy to connect with affiliations, works, and awards
10. Enables researchers to play their part in making the Internet better!

13. Top 10 benefits for research orgs
1. Improve speed and accuracy of research reporting
2. Maintain connections with researchers despite name/affiliation changes
3. Reduce/eliminate need for researcher disambiguation processes
4. Enable machine-to-machine updates for researcher reporting
5. Strengthen connections/stickiness of researchers to your system
6. Validate your researchers’ affiliation, awards,or works – building trust in the
overall research infrastructure
7. Learn from other organizations’ experiences and share your own
8. Benefit from opportunities for public recognition of good ORCID integrations
