Madrid, July 16, 2014. Banco Santander presented today the design for the trophy that
was handed over to the winning constructor and top three drivers who won the Formula 1
Santander British Grand Prix 2014 and that will be hand over next Sunday in the Formula 1
Grosser Preis Santander von Deutschland 2014.
The bank launched a design competition for university students around the world in April,
‘Santander Challenge Design the Trophy’ (www.santanderchallenge.com), through its
Santander Universities Global Division, to have a new trophy for the winners of 2014 races
at Silverstone and Hockenheim.
Over 750 university students from 15 countries took part in the challenge with 371 designs,
mainly from Mexico and Spain, followed by Argentina, Colombia, the UK, Uruguay and
Poland, among others. The proposals received almost half a million votes, producing three
finalists and an expert jury then took the final decision at the last stage.
The winning trophy was designed by Saúl Latorre Sebastián, a student at Universidad
Católica de Murcia (UCAM) in Spain. As a prize for his project, Saúl will enjoyed a trip for
two to the race in the UK.
The Santander trophy has been produced applying the most advanced 3-D printing
technologies (selective laser sintering or SLS and the stereolithograpy or SLA). These are
technologies employed in creating concept models and functional prototypes used in wind
tunnels testing and water flow analysis for the America’s Cup sailing yachts, as well as end-
use parts in aerospace and other industries.
Many parts of a F1®
car are made of Polyamide PA12, the same material used for the red
nerves of the trophy, while the tusk resin for the inner flame is commonly used to coat
certain carbon fiber elements of the racing cars.
The second finalist was Andrés Díaz de León – a student from the Institute of Technology
and Higher Education in Monterrey, Mexico, who submitted two models and will be
presented with an exclusive F1®
helmet. The third – a student from the University Jaume I
of Castellon – will receive gloves and boots. In both cases they will be from a Ferrari or
McLaren Mercedes driver, to be chosen by the students.
