Planes and axes with appropriate explanation
1. Planes and Axes
Presented by -
Mr Bhubaneswar Dayal Mishra

Welcome in the perfect Physio Tutorial YouTube channel
2. Plane
It is the surface or place on which the movement occurs
or takes place.
Axis
It is the line around which the movement takes place.
Axis is always right angle (90°) of the plane.
Introduction -
3. There are 3 planes -
1. Sagittal plane or Anteroposterior plane or Median plane or
longitudinal plane or vertical plane
2. Frontal plane or mediolateral plane or Lateral plane or
Vertical plane.
3. Transverse plane or Horizontal plane or Tatitudinal plane.
There are 3 axes -
1. Saggital Axis or Anteroposterior axis .
2. Coronal Axis or Frontal axis or Lateral axis .
3. Vertical Axis or Longitudinal axis.
4. Also known as anterior posterior plane or median plane or
vertical plane or longitudinal plane.
In the sagittal plane ,the imaginary line passes from front to
back and divided the two symmetrical halves .
Sagittal plane is an anatomical plane which divided the
body into right and left parts.
Axis - Frontal axis or lateral axis or coronal Axis or X - axis.
1. Saggital Plane
5.
6.
7. Movement in the saggital Plane
All flexion movements except lateral flexion .
All extension movements .
Hyperextension .
Exceptionally - Shoulder and Hip lateral abduction also occurs in this
plane.
Squating
Walking
running
Jumping
Stair climbing etc.
8. 2. Frontal Plane
Also known as lateral plane or mediolateral plane or
coronal plane or vertical plane or longitudinal plane .
An imaginary line passes from side to side at right
angle to the sagittal plane and divide the body into
front and back ( anterior and posterior).
Axis - Saggital Axis or anteroposterior axis .
9.
10.
11. Movement in the frontal Plane
All abduction movement except shoulder and
Hip lateral abduction.
All adduction movement .
Radial and ulnar deviations.
Lateral flexion.
Elevation and dipression Of scapula.
Inversion and eversion movements. Etc.
12. 3. Transverse plane
Also known as horizontal plane or latitudinal
plane.
Transverse plane that divided the body into
superior and inferior part.
It is right angle to the frontal plane and sagittal
plane.
Axis - Vertical axis.
13.
14.
15. Movement in the Transverse Plane
All kinds of rotation movements like -
Medial rotation,
Lateral rotation ,
Supination and Pronation,
Protraction and Retraction,
Left and right rotation of head , neck and trunk,
Transverse flexion , extension, abduction and adduction
movements.
16. Axis
Also known as anterior-posterior axis or Z - axis.
It bisects the body literally from side to side and
dividing into front and back.
Plane regarding to Saggital Axis is coronal plane or
frontal plane or lateral plane.
Saggital Axis
17.
18. 2.Coronal Axis
Also known as Frontal axis or Lateral axis or X-
axis .
It bisects the body from front to back and dividing
into left and right halves.
The plane regarding to the coronal Axis is sagittal
plane Or median plane or anteroposterior plane.
19.
20. 3. Vertical Axis
Also known as longitudinal axis or Y - axis
.
Plane regarding to the vertical Axis is
Transverse plane or horizontal plane .
