Franke Amashova Weekend
Franke Amashova 2014 | Press Release
The Amashova is an annual mass participation cycle event
and one of the most popular events on the KZN calendar.
It attracts over 10 000 cyclists nationally. Having full
road closures on the cycle route from Pietermaritzburg
to Durban, it is regarded as KZN’s safest cycle race. This
year, the Amashova celebrated its 28th race, making it the
oldest ‘Classic’ cycle race in the country.
This year Franke South Africa has celebrated its Centenary
year in South Africa. With this milestone occasion to
celebrate we decided to participate for a second year
running as a corporate group in the Amashova Durban
Classic cycle race, this year in a larger capacity. The
“Franke Cycle Team” this years was made up of 85 Franke
customers, suppliers and staff members. Some participated
in the fun 35km race, while other more avid cyclists took
the challenge of the 65km and 106km race.
The 2014 Franke Jersey was noticeably more colourful
this year too as we had 10 event sponsors who helped to
make it possible to accommodate a larger Franke team.
There were different sponsor positions available from Gold
to Silver and Bronze and all spots were taken up almost
immediately. We would like to thank all these suppliers for
their contribution to what was an incredible weekend and
special occasion for Franke.
The weekend officially began with a kick-off celebratory
dinner to welcome all our cyclists who had travelled from
around the country to be here for the event. The dinner was
held at Salt Rock Hotel, just north of Ballito on the Dolphin
Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Guests and staff
from out of town were also accommodated at the hotel for
the weekend.
AMASHOVA HISTORY – ‘1986 - 2014’
The 1986 the very first event left the City Hall in
Pietermaritzburg in fierce heat on a Saturday afternoon,
and followed, for the most part, the Comrades Marathon
route. The deviation occurred in Westville where the cyclists
followed the nagging climbs of Blair Athol Road, and then
came down through Reservoir Hills, over the Connaught
Bridge, into Riverside Road and finished outside the Pick ‘n
Pay’s Hypermarket-By-The-Sea in Durban North. The total
distance was approximately 95 kilometres and the traffic
authority gave permission for only 150 riders to participate.
The route remained much the same until 1993.
In order to try and make the race as close to 100 kilometres
as possible, a course change was necessary. The route
bypassed the famous Polly Shorts hill and instead the
challenging 14km Alexander Road climb was introduced up
Fox Hill to Thornville.
This year for the first time the Tsogo Sun Amashova was
part of the UCI World Cycling Tour: The amateur Worlds
qualifier series.
The UCI World Cycling Tour (UWCT) is a series of UCI-
sanctioned races held all over the world. Some 15 qualifier
events will qualify the top 25% in each age group to the
Amateur Road World Championships, where the champions
are awarded with the coveted rainbow jersey.
The Tsogo Sun Amashova 106km has race prize money of
over R100 000

BRONZE SPONSERS:
It was decided, after so much interest in last years festivities, why not use this event and Franke’s broad client and supplier
list to make a difference. It is with this in mind that the sponsorship concept come to fruition. The months leading upto
Amashova 2014 were spent securing 10 of Franke’s most valuable suppliers as co-sponsors for the event.
These sponsorships allowed us to make a considerable donation towards The Highway Hospice. On the 28th October 2014
a cheque for R20 000.00 was handed over to Linda Webb, Chief Executive Officer for The Highway Hospice in Durban. We
thank our sponsors for their kind gesture and support us in promoting a healthy lifestyle and assisting those in need.
The Highway Hospice
In patient and home based care for the termanally ill
The Highway Hospice covers just over 2000 square
kilometres in the greater Durban area – from Ballito in
the north to Amanzimtoti in the south and then west
to Hillcrest – and this is where we send our registered
nurses and social workers out to care for those in need.
We currently have 480 patients on our programme. We
care for both the patient and their families – with is no
charge for the service we provide.
The Highway Hospice receives no Government funding
so we rely on people such as Franke and other donors,
and our fundraising efforts, to keep our doors open.

The number of participants increased substantially from
last year and many more customers got to experience
being part of the Franke family, on the road, at the factory
and in the tent after the race.
The event planning and organisation was exceptional, due
to our hard working and dedicated employees. I would like
to thank all our employees for their efforts in ensuring the
experience for our customers was wonderful.
Finally, a big thank you to our loyal customers for supporting
the event and also taking the time out to get to know our

MY EXPERIENCE
So, it turned out that I competed with myself, I pushed my
boundaries well beyond what I thought was possible for
a man over 60. And this is probably the best lesson that
I took from the race – get out of your comfort zone and
push the boundaries till you have developed a new frame
of reference.
To do the Amashova required 100% commitment and it
involved quite a bit of training getting up at 4am on a cool
winters morning and ride the hills till your legs wobble. But
the reward was just great and will do it over and over again
as long as there is life in my legs.
It was a strange race, my first Amashova. I heard about the
hills that kill you, but I just stayed focus on my plan – pace
yourself, ride on cadence, eat, drink and most important
stick to the race plan .
The last 30km was very tough with a straight headwind,
tons of cramps, fears of quitting but then I remembered my
The Amashova cycle race was more than just a race. A race? What race?

tutors voice “the worst regret is not finishing“. So, the pain
was there but the pleasure in the end was huge.
Thank you to the entire marketing team for all the
arrangements, to our customers, architects and staff
for joining us and a special thanks to our sponsors who
enabled us to make a donation towards Hospice.
Hope to see you all again in 2015 !!!

On Saturday our Franke cyclists were invited to our Head
Office in Mobeni, Durban. Here our 35km cyclists loaded
their bicycles into their dedicated 35km panel van which
would meet them the following morning at Moses Mabida.
John McCluskey, FSA Operations Manager, led a
comprehensive tour of the Franke factory. Franke South
Africa produces over 80% of its products locally in this
11 000 m2 factory on an 18 000 m2 site, with some 300
people are employed at the facility. Our guests were able to
see the hydraulic deep-drawing presses, laser cutters, CNC
bending and Robotic Welding equipment that allows Franke
to produce detailed precision and a high quality standard
of product. Guests could also view a wide selection of
our domestic and commercial products, all installed and
working, in our Franke Training Facility & Showroom.
Before handing out of the Franke Goodie-bags, our
cyclists enjoyed a brief company presentation by FSA
Managing Director, Craig McIntyre as well as some words
of encouragement from FSA Commercial Manager Schalk
de Beer. This was followed by some snack before all were
transported back to the hotel to relax before the big race.

Wake up call was bright and early… well actually; it was so
early it was still pitch dark! Salt Rock Hotel arranged that a
self-service breakfast was available from 03h00. Our first
bus to depart Salt Rock was the 65km bus at 03h30, which
set off for the Cato Ridge start, with a detour to Moses
Mabhida to collect our local cyclists. Our second bus to
depart, carrying the 35km cyclists did encounter some
problems causing a timetable delay. He managed however
to get our 35km fun-riders to the start in the nick of time. If
there was an Amashova Bus Challenge I am sure he would
be a good contender for the win! The largest group of our
cyclists left on the third bus at 04h15 for Pietermaritzburg,
also via Moses Mabhida. Cyclists were seeded to start
between 06h45 and 08h00.
Back at Suncoast Casino, the Franke Sales and Marketing
Team were waiting at the Franke Corporate Marque to
welcome our cyclists. As the first of the 35km cyclists came
in, at around 6am, they were able to put down their bikes
and relax in the Franke Marque where protein shakes and
snacks were available, as well as sports massages. True to
his word FSA Managing Director, Craig McIntyre, was the
first cyclist on the massage tables! Many followed suit soon
after to enjoy a well-deserved body and foot massage.
Our first 106km cyclist over the finish line was Nibigh Davids
of Boogertman & Partners CPT, with an impressive time of
2:25:30. This time earned him 19th place overall, only 14
seconds shy of the Nolan Hoffman, this year’s Amashova
Classic 106km Winner! Franke congratulates Nibigh on this
outstanding performance! Another member of Boogertman
& Partners CPT, Ishmael Khan, was our second Franke cyclist
to finish with another impressive finish time of 2:44:19.
These are the Top-Ten Franke Cyclists, who also finished
within the first 1000 places out of 4392. Congratulations to
all of you, as well as everyone who finished their race! Our
Franke Cyclists had a definite presence at this year’s event,
even receiving a mention of approval from the East Coast
Radio DJ’s at the finish line!
The Amashova weekend was a great success. All that
were involved from Franke staff, to our Sponsors and the
Cyclists both local and those travelling from other regions,
contributed to a weekend of personal achievement, fun and
friendship!

Yes, MTN Club 100
How long have you been a cyclist and how did you get
into cycling?
It all started when my dad bought me my first BMX at 6. I
have been riding bike since school days, but only really got
competitive much later after I graduated and when I started
my first job. After doing my first Argus Race in Matric the
racing bug bit and the rest was history.
Do you have a favourite race you enjoy competing in
most?
Would have to be the Cape Town Cycle Tour
Is this your first Amashova Classic Race, and if not how
many have you completed?
I did my first one last year. This was my second.
How did you find your 106km cycle in Durban at the
Amashova?
It was an incredibly gruelling, fast paced race. It was quite
challenging trying to hold on with sub vets in the front
bunch. The wind played a bit of a factor few kilometres
to the end and the group hustling for position made it a
bit nerve wrecking. It felt a bit easier than last year since I
trained much harder for this one.
If you could give some advice to our cyclists who are
thinking of taking on the 106km next year for the first
time, what would you say?
Train smart, eat right and make sure you spend enough
time in the saddle. It’s not an easy course, but with enough
training it can be a relatively pain free experience.
Passing through the ‘Valley of a Thousand Hills’ - beautiful, majestic landscape and sugar cane
plantations.

I Have 3, all the big ones Amashova, 94.7 and The Argus
(Cape Town Cycle Tour) The spectators make these races
for me, the outside support is incredible!
Is this your first Amashova Classic Race, and if not how
many have you completed?
It’s my 2nd Amashova, Last year was my 1st.
How did you find your 106km cycle in Durban at the
Amashova?
I really enjoyed this race; I was fit enough for it and took
every hill as it came! I must admit though the last 30kms
were tough into the wind, but all in all a great event!
If you could give some advice to our cyclists who are
thinking of taking on the 106km next year for the first
time, what would you say?
Yes 106kms seems daunting but with a little bit of training
and taking the race in your stride, you’ll do great! It’s all
about your mind-set on the day and most of all you got to
enjoy it! So take it at your pace and enjoy the scenery along
the way.
I think the whole weekend was a hit! I really enjoyed the team efforts, a lot of work was put into
that weekend and it showed. It was great to meet new people who share similar interests. The
Franke tour was great too, always helps knowing the process of a product and what goes into it,
but if I have to be specific, being at the coast always puts a smile on my face and the race was
a good one for me.
