Privileged to be here Thanks to Col Mercado, LTC Dopf, Dean Green, Jim Whetstone Stimulate discussion; not intended to be a one-way briefing You probably think leadership is as much fun as a self service massage parlor, but it transcends the present...you’re building a skills “tool box” use when appropriate Story about “Year of Training” education vs training 1991
  2. Make no mistake about it, sound leadership and management transcend the military There’s a chain of command in the Corporate world; just tougher to know the rank because it’s not on their suits
  3. Have you ever heard: been there done that, got the T-shirt? That should provide you a level of confidence many of your peers don’t have There is no growth without risk...how you manage that will determine your success. Change is constant...organizations fight against change because that represents the unknown. The irony is that many times change will save an organization
  4. Chinese Proverb: May you live in interesting times Crisis is change trying to take place Dividing an elephant in half doesn’t give you 2 elephants Web 2.0 vs Web 1.0...distance has become irrelevant Our economy underpins national security in all sectors Airplanes, tanks, and manufacturing lines don’t have problems, organizations don’t have problems, people have problems The best way to predict the future is to create it.
  5. Lesson of the final turn in pilot training Never let yourself get in that position; be prepared before you leave the ground.

We need to translate your additional responsibility & ”time sacrifice” into resume terms Discuss DOPMA, AF promotion boards (9 pilots vs 1) Find a way to quantify your subordinates accomplishments as well as informing your boss Manage things...lead people You must quantify...let’s discuss corporate America Here’s an example

The job you have today is the most important job you have...never play two ends against the middle...IBM & government Never stop self improvement Your most precious commodity is your time Read and apply the classics The harder you work, the luckier you get Even God played on the 7th day...remember: they’re always watching you!
  8. Vision is the one common quality that separates leaders from non-leaders. The difference between the undesirable & the unacceptable.
