1. JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2015 11
Y
et another year has passed – yet
another reminder of your age, and the
passing of time.
Let’s be honest – are you really okay with
ageing?
If your answer is no, then you are
definitely not alone, that is, if global anti-
ageing product expenditure is anything
to go by. According to ‘Global Industry
Analysts Inc’, we are set to spend as much
as US$290bn globally in 2015 on staying
younger longer.
What would you say if you could wipe
years off your looks, easily and naturally?
If you don’t care about looks, then let’s
rephrase the question.
How would you like to feel younger, have
more energy, naturally feel better within
yourself, be less bothered by what others
think, be hormonally balanced, feel strong,
be flexible, enjoy a youthful libido, and, as an
added bonus, look younger?
“Well... when you put it like that... who
wouldn’t?”, you say.
We’ve all seen people who look vastly
younger than their age, and who enjoy
youthful energy and boundless stamina.
How do they do it? What ways are there
beyond genetic inheritance and lifestyle?
It may interest you that scientific research
demonstrates that your chronological age
does not dictate our biological age (how
you actually look, feel and function), which
means you can be 50 years old and quite
literally have the face, body and health of a
35-year-old.
The bad news is that you could just as
easily have the face, body and health of
someone decades your senior, and when
that’s the case, that impacts your energy
levels, immunity, hormones, bone density,
sex drive, and of course your quality of life
and life expectancy. Recently I heard of a
young man in his late 30s, diagnosed with
recurring deep vein thrombosis, who was
told by doctors that he has the legs of an
80-year-old.
But, here’s the good news. There is strong
evidence that biological ageing can be
slowed and reversed at any time.
“Really?”, you may say. I assure you that
my own experience in holistic health has
proven this true to me, and, although it’s not
the focus of this article to prove the case, we
will look at how to do it.
So, what makes some people biologically
younger, and others older? And what can we
do to change it?
Eight fundamental basics for a younger
you
1. DIET
Our metabolism slows as we age. Eating less,
more often, and chewing well are effective
and immediate ways to improve digestion
without altering what you eat. Chewing well
also creates an alkaline state, cancelling out
the ageing effects of free radicals. In fact, it’s
the cheapest, simplest way to add years to
life span.
Reduce sugar. Glucose sugar binds to and
inhibits DNA, proteins and lipids. Consider
the benefits of taking a small range of
quality dietary supplements (more below.)
2. BREATHING
Most of us don’t breathe as we used to as
infants.
Retrain yourself to breathe all the way
down into your abdomen, while also filling
the lungs up towards the shoulders. The
golden rule is to do it gently, over time. Chi
gong, tai chi or Buteyko may assist .
3. EXERCISE
Ditch the long gym slogs and hours of
cardio. Research shows that shorter, more
intense whole body workouts strengthen
immunity, improve bone density, reboot the
endocrine system, reignite the metabolism
and sharpen the mind.
Dr. Jamie Timmons’ research shows
that just one minute per day, three times
a week of ‘high intensive training’ (HIT),
significantly benefits digestion and fat
burning ability.
Make exercise about fun – it’s not just the
exercise which shapes your body – your
mindset does too. Mix it up. Incorporate
dance. Enjoy yourself.
4. YOGA
Yoga is a mindful way to open energy
channels in the body so that energy is
balanced and free flowing. A flexible body
promotes a flexible mind.
Yoga actually means ‘communion’ – so
when it is practised in a way that opens the
practitioner to Universal Consciousness, then
the benefits are greatly amplified.
5. MEDITATION AND MINDFULNESS
Proven to support ‘telomerase’ production,
meditation reduces ‘telomere-shortening’
of DNA material as our cells reproduce – a
direct ageing-contributor. Meditation is a
form of ‘communion’ with Source, Universal
Consciousness, God or Higher Self (whatever
you choose to call IT); a state which promotes
wonderful health benefits.
