THE DOWNSIDES AND DISADVANTAGES OF REMOTE
WORKING
Technology cannot mitigate every element of being a remote
worker, although it can help with many
Managing a highly dispersed team remains challenging both
for the managers and the employees
Human nature makes us social animals, we want contact with
our colleagues, and sometimes electronic communication does
not fulfill this need
Collaboration based completely on documents, comments and
other digital artifacts fits some business scenarios better than
others – there is no one size fits all prescription for success

The digital workplace strategy must be a good fit with the organizational culture in
order for it to be used successfully to support remote workers
If the organizational culture does not mesh with the vision of a digital workplace, then
you may need a strategy and plans to develop and change your organizational culture
Ultimately, digital workplace strategy, business processes, HR processes are all
subservient to the overall culture

Provide training sessions & materials, and examples
Test the technology with the remote team, to make sure it
works for everybody
• All the licences you need to use the software
• All the approvals you need to work remotely
• Suitable hardware (from the organization or from the individual)
