2. What is Instructional Design and its
Importance?
“Instructional design is the creation of learning
experiences and materials in a manner that
results in the acquisition and application of
knowledge and skills. The discipline follows a
system of assessing needs, designing a
process, developing materials and evaluating
their effectiveness”

Instructional design is the framework to
a quality training experience.
Training must be well-planned and organized to
ensure an overall positive learning experience for
the learners and organization.
The foundation of developing
people is training.
Training can enhance the knowledge of
individuals and create opportunities.
No training is effective without the principles of a
quality instructional design model. Training must be
based on a scientific approach and systematic
methodology of instructional design models

3. ADDIE Model
The ADDIE model was created in
1970 for the military by Florida
State University.
The ADDIE model is composed of 5 phases which are
Analyze
Design
Development
Implement
Evaluate
in the analysis phase designers gather a great amount of data. Knowledge and Skills Assessment
are conducted. Designers distinguish the training gap.
The design phase is when developers devise a roadmap for the training. In this phase designers
create objectives, devise course content and finalize the training plan.
In the development phase, designers begin testing their training program.
This phase is where the design phase comes to life.
The implementation phase is when training content is distributed to the learners. Designers and
learners work together to ensure the training is effective and make changes.
The final phase determines whether training objectives have been met. Although
Evaluation of the training program happen through out every stage.

4. Dick and Carey Model
The Dick and Carey model was created
in 1978 by Walter Dick and Lou Carey.
This model approaches the instructional
design process by utilizing the steps
collaboratively rather than isolated
phases. The model emphasizes on the
connections between different elements
such as context, content, learning and
instruction. This model is based on the
belief that instructors, learners,
materials, instructional activities the
delivery system work in tandem to
maximize the efficacy of the learning
experience.

5. 10 Phases of the Dick and Carey Model
1. Identify the instructional goals- In this step an assessment is conducted to identify needs and goals.
2. Conduct instructional analysis - identify the essential requirements a leaner need for a particular task.
3. Analyze learners - assess the learners’ prior knowledge and skills to gauge what is needed to meet the
instructional goals.
4. Performance objectives- identify the goals and objectives for the learner. It is important for objectives to be
clear, precise, and detailed. Objectives need to be measurable to evaluate the learners’ performance.
5. Develop the assessment tools- create a test such as pre-test, post-test, and practice assessments. These
assessments shall be congruent with performance objectives.

6. Develop instructional strategies- devise the framework for a lesson plan include pre-instruction activities,
content presentation, participations and assessment.
7. Develop and select instructional materials- gather any materials needed for the lesson or activities and
ensure they’re properly functioning.
8. Conduct formative evaluation - identify any areas in the instructional design or materials that need to be
improved or modified.
9. Revise instruction - modify any items or instructions that have been deemed unsuccessful or resulted in poor
outcomes
10. Conduct summative evaluations – analyze the quality of the whole entire system program.

7. Advantage and Disadvantage of the
ADDIE Model and Dick & Carey Model
ADDIE Advantages
ADDIE simple structured and
orderly step by step process
mitigates any confusion in phases
ADDIE is one of the original Instructional
design models created and other models
are similar to ADDIE. Therefore
understanding ADDIE is important in ID
ADDIE Disadvantage
Due to the linear framework of ADDIE, designers
are not able to move back in phases. Meaning
designers must follow through the end before they
are able to revisit a phase
Dick & Carey Advantages
The model is goal-centered and works as a whole
system. Each phase is interconnected
The model considers the learners prior
knowledge as part of the design process
Dick & Carey Disadvantages
This Model may be too time consuming to some
with short deadlines

8. Instructional Design Models
All models used in instructional design are unique in their own ways, but all have several core components
The dick and Carey model is similar to the ADDIE model
Every component of ADDIE is seen in the D&C model
D&C model deconstructs the ADDIE model into 10 phases
Both contain formative and summative evaluations, which is a crucial step in both models
