ERA software is built to solve well
construction problems that engineers
face every day. It is the first software
built that allows visualization of the
impact of design changes on the well
as a holistic system.
In 2012 K&M embarked upon an aggressive software development
project to replace our legacy TAD software. Key objectives for the
project were to dramatically improve utility, accuracy, and speed.
The result of our efforts is a commercial software platform dubbed
Extended Reach Architect (ERA). ERA creates a dynamic and
user friendly environment that allows engineers to gain a better
understanding of the loads, stresses and pressures encountered
during the well construction process.

2. Other Noteworthy Features
Key Advantages
Holistic Design Structure
ERA’s unique configuration keeps the user centered over the entire well.
This approach allows the user to develop the well as a system, rather than
focusing on piecemeal components only.
Network and Stand-Alone Licensing
K&M offers ERA licensing two different ways. 1.) The classic standalone
option where the software is installed on a single machine. 2.) The network
licensing option where multiple users have ERA installed on their machines
but a limited number of users can use the software simultaneously. Licens-
es are managed through K&M’s licensing server.
String Builder / String Rolodex
Drill string design is an iterative process. ERA allows users to graphically
interact with the string by dragging/dropping, stretching/shrinking, and
manipulating string components and instantly seeing the impact on loads.
Never before has drill string design been this much fun.
Libraries
ERA comes pre-loaded with technical specifications for many of the
most popular oil-field components, including top drives, pumps, BHA
components, drill pipe, casing, centralizers, drilling and cementing
fluids.
VME Limits
Unique to ERA, maximum permissible surface tension and surface
torque limits are plotted alongside expected loads to give engineers and
field personnel confidence that operations will not exceed specified
pipe limitations, even under complex loading situations.
Downhole MSE
Also unique to this platform, ERA will infer downhole mechanical
specific energy (MSE) using surface parameters by backing out the drill
string’s contribution to surface-measured loads. ERA can also utilize
downhole measurement, allowing users to compare two independent
methods of calculating MSE at the bit. This approach yields unique
opportunities to prevent and/or correct destructive conditions from
occurring downhole.
Usability
ERA is packed with usability features to expedite engineering
workflow such as: Smart Defaults, String Rolodex, and a
comprehensive set of rig, tubular, BHA, fluids, and accessory
libraries. We have fully optimized ERA so that users get the
answers they are looking for quickly and easily.
Accuracy
ERA algorithms are field-proven and used on a daily basis on the
most challenging wells in the world. K&M’s reputation depends
heavily on getting it right the first time, due to the high-stakes
environment in which we operate. When it has to be right, would
you trust anything other than field-proven drilling software?
Speed
ERA is 100 times faster than our previous generation software.
With countless tasks expected of the modern Drilling Engineer,
who has time to wait for answers? ERA delivers a full well design
analysis in less than 15 minutes.
