A central theme to everything we talk about today is the Brightspace Daylight Experience ”a new look and feel for Brightspace”.
We’ve been hard at work for several months defining a new visual design language for Brightspace.
With this new work, we will have a beautiful, modern user interface. And, very importantly, it was built with mobile in mind.
We’re humbled by the industry for recognizing our passion for innovation. But there’s another voice that we value more highly – our customers. We’re constantly listening to our customers and they tell us they want us to focus on these areas. And because we’re in the cloud, we’re constantly updating our service. Every 3-4 months, we wrap these all up in a release which includes dozens of features and enhancements and often includes a major innovation.
Goals:
Create a great first impression
Enable a responsive user experience
Simplify screens with great visual design
Focus on:
Responsive web design
Simplified top navigation
New fonts, layout, colors, iconography, animation
Greater use of photography
Updated and new Valence UI components
Redesign of high value properties
Capture is a great video technology for teachers to record and deliver content to learners. It is part of our Spring 2016 Release and also has the Brightspace Daylight Experience.
Capture helps you improve your courses with fully searchable video content that can be access on both mobile and desktop devices.
It helps you increase learner retention and expand your audience reach giving you an intuitive platform to record and broadcast live or on-demand presentations.
Capture makes it EASY TO SHARE video content.
Capture lets teachers and instructors deliver a “front row experience” to online learners. They can present live, or on-demand recorded presentations with full support for rich-media content: audio, video, and screen sharing.
Built on HTML5 with a mobile-first design, Capture allows learners to view content on whatever platform suits them best – their Learning Environment, a website, or from their mobile device.
Both High-Def and Standard-Def video are supported, meaning on-demand video streaming will work well, even when Internet coverage is not great.
-----
USE CASES:
Enriched instruction
Blended Learning
Students can focus on the content of a lecture rather than just keeping up with note taking.
Focus on which components of the lecture are critical to them
Find content quickly
Flipped Classroom
Use of premade video clips allows for more discussion and problem solving in the face-to-face teaching.
Distance Education
Giving the same access to the same content for remote students.
2) Onboarding & Enablement
New staff, partners and customers have learning needs and media supports that learning process through real time, face-to-face engagement. Content becomes reusable and searchable.
3) Professional Development
K-12 teachers have limited windows for professional development in their regular routine. Live streamed and on demand content rich media creates flexible opportunities for training.
Real time streaming of development programs allows teachers to take longer sessions instead of traveling to a central location.
On demand content can be consumed in smaller chunks during professional development breaks in a teacher’s day.
4) Communication
For any audiences looking to broadcast one-to-many communications, real time or on demand, be that government council sessions to the public, principals to parents, or institutions to their students.
The recorded presentations produced by Capture are EASY TO SEARCH.
In-video search helps learners jump to the exact content they’re looking for.
This search is facilitated by automatic speech recognition to create closed captions for recorded presentations. Furthermore, Capture’s smart optical character recognition (OCR) reads the content of presentation visual to make those searchable too.
Our new Brightspace Daylight user experience – with a simple, modern design and mobile-first philosophy – makes Capture easy to use, both from the instructor and learner point of view.
Capture helps learners find what they’re looking for quickly and easily.
Finally, Capture makes video content EASY TO MANAGE.
Recorded Capture files are exported as standard video files, allowing them to be used with third-party video editing tools.
But Capture also comes with the built-in Capture Producer tool for editing directly within the platform.
Although Capture works well as a standalone product, it really shines through its tight integration with the Brightspace Learning Environment. From directly within the LE, teachers and instructors can do things like…
- Schedule and manage live events
- View, share, and manage recordings
…without having to navigate out of the LE to an external interface
Degree Compass is all about helping students complete their degrees and helping them complete them as quickly as possible.

The key issues here:
Student Retention
Degree Completion
Time to Degree
What is the impact of these three issues?
For every 1 percentage point improvement in drop outs, Georgia State is able to keep $3 million in tuition & fees that would have otherwise been lost.
At an average of $24,061 in costs per academic year, a student can save about $25,000 on the cost of education by completing the degree on time.

The fact is: students in Higher Ed need academic advisors.
Studies show that better academic advising increases student success and improves colleges’ four-year graduation rates
One study in particular showed that 93% of students had indicated Academic Advising contributed to their overall satisfaction with their college education.

But not all students have access to advisors.
The average ratio of students to advisors is 375:1, with some states as high as 1200:1.
Of the students that DO have access to an advisor, they are already the engaged ones who are likely to do the best in school.
There are simply not enough advisors to reach the students that need it most – the unengaged students.

What is the impact of this lack of access?
Nationally, $1 BN is spent annually on academic advising – about 5 to 12% of each institution’s budget.
But despite this investment, on-time graduation and retention rates have not improved over the last 10 years.

That’s where Degree Compass comes in. Put the information in the hands of the students that need it most.
It is a course selection and academic advisement tool that uses predictive analytics to recommend courses to students.
It gives students and advisors actionable insights through data visualization, to help make course recommendations and informed course selections.
Low barrier to entry – this is a relatively small and inexpensive application relative to the impact on retention.
It is LMS-independent. It takes data from the SIS system, not LMS, so it can be used with any LMS.
What ingredients go into the ratings?
1. Course sequence data – all the institution’s data around what constitutes a program – courses, prerequisites, etc.
This is used to determine where the student is in their overall program.
2. Historical achievement data – 10-15 years of achievement data that is used to build the predictive engine.
The output from these data is two things.
1. Based on course sequence data, ranking all unmet courses for the student’s program, and helps determine what they need to do to complete the degree.
2. Based on predictive algorithms, a grade prediction.
Degree Compass uses several inputs to drive its predictive engines and algorithm
Student Information System (SIS):
Ellucian Banner SIS
High School transcripts, GPA, SATs, ACTs, Class Rank, etc.
Degree Audit Systems (DAS):
Ellucian Degree Works
Program Inventory - Courses, Schedules, Core and Elective Requirements, etc.
Note that is NOT dependent on LMS data – it can be used independently of an LMS.
