During my free screening, I ask all of my clients of the ways they’ve quit smoking in the past and the
results. I’m always amazed of the crazy stories of the people on Chantix and what they’ve experienced
and here are a few stories that I’ve put together.

A sensational CBS report on Carter Albrecht, a Dallas musician formerly with Edie Brickell & New
Bohemians. Albrecht had started taking Chantix with his fiancee, with seemingly dramatic side effects.
She claimed he had had bizarre hallucinations that worsened when he drank. One evening,
he attacked her, something he’d never done before.
He then ran to his neighbor’s house and kicked at the door, screaming
incomprehensibly. The neighbor was so panicked he wound up shooting Albrecht through the door,
killing him.

- The dreams….ohhh, the dreams. Not exactly nightmares in my case. No blood or guts or Freddy chasing
me. Mine were more of a hidden anxiety variety. I had dreams that lasted all night, like my brother dying
in Iraq, my husband cheating on me, my dead cat walking around my house… and they always ended at
4 am.
- I’d become rather reclusive, avoiding calls from friends, and basically just shuttling back and forth
between my office and my apartment. The subway was now out of the question; it made me too
nervous.

- I wondered whether Chantix was zapping my brain’s pleasure-delivery system to such a degree that
not only did I find no reward in cigarettes, but I also found no reward in socializing and exercising.

3. - Since taking this drug, it’s been a strange experience. It feels as though I’ve been hyper-aware, prone
to outbursts of anger (not like me normally at all). The anger thing has worried me so much that today is
the last day I will take this drug.
- My head feels constantly foggy, almost like being hung over, but at the same time, I’m jittery and
people just don’t seem to move fast enough; total hyper-awareness.
- Last night and earlier tonight, I went out with two groups of friends. They both noticed a slight change
in my behavior. When I said that I was taking a new drug, both groups said that I’ve been saying weird
things.
- Well, it has certainly been a “trip” to say the least. My whole life has changed and not exactly for the
better. I have had bazaar thoughts. Nothing I felt like taking action on, but wild stuff. One morning after
eating a bowl of cereal, I thought “I should pour this left over milk into the toaster”! Crap!
- Total euphoria. I sat at my desk at work giggling like a fool. I had no concern whatsoever for myself or
my actions. Everything was just so funny and happy. I went to the doctor, and they determined I had a
“rare” reaction to the medication and took me off. The next day, I had severe pain. Now, over 3 months
later, I continue to have pain, fatigue, memory issues, concentration issues. I have been to a
rheumatologist, and am now being sent to an endocrinologist because since I have gotten off Chantix,
my thyroid has been all over the place. Because these were so immediate and severe, there is just no
way to say they are unrelated.
- I don’t know!! When I drink beers, I have blank spots in my evening. I have never done this before
Chantix and I thought about driving off of the highway for no apparent reason. I didn’t think of getting
hurt or wanting to hurt myself, it was just a real thought. I was completely fine before Chantix. I can’t
concentrate anymore. I use to be a very organized person. I’ve almost lost my job due to anger outburst.

- Then…I got close to having my period. PMS and Chantix delt me a one-two punch that I’m still trying to
get through. The usual mood swings of PMS turned were magnified by Chantix. I was exhausted, didn’t
care about anything, all my dream activity was beginning to take its toll on my rest. One night, I forgot
to take my Chantix and guess what? No dreams. I caught on quick.
- CVery intense headaches. I stopped taking Chantix after 11 days. I will try to quit another way. It took
about a week after stopping for my headaches to go away and to finally feel like myself again. I am
happy to feel normal again.

from week 9 to week 52,” Chatterjee admits. “So the failure rate was about seventy seven percent!”
