He was born to an Irish-born
father, Patrick Sullivan, and a Swiss-born
mother, Andrienne List.
In 1862, his grandparents bought a farm in
South Reading (now
Wakefield), Massachusetts, enabling Louis to
spend summers and occasionally entire school
years in the country, from which Louis Sullivan
developed a lifelong love of nature.
He is considered by many as the creator of
