use CA SYSVIEW® to discover CA Datacom® environments and
drill down for performance information, error diagnostics and
much more.
CA SYSVIEW® Performance Management is an integral part of
performance management solutions from CA Technologies
which expose a wealth of performance information that you can
access through customizable displays. CA SYSVIEW®
Performance Management CA Datacom® Option provides a
direct performance management interface for the CA
Datacom®/DB environment.

– Isolates the user from release inconsistencies
§ Removes concerns over having to upgrade one product to match the other

Status shows what each task is doing
• ACTIVE are tasks that running on a CPU
• READY TO RUN – waiting for a CPU
• WAIT xxxx – Task asleep while waiting
on another function to complete
• NOT ACTIVE – not currently processing
a Datacom command

Using CA SYSVIEW for Real - Time Problem Solving
Only Real-Time Tool to Look Inside MUF
§ CA SYSVIEW interface allows SYSVIEW to “see” inside MUF
even when the MUF is hung or looping
§ Not every situation will be the same, but there are a couple of
familiar occurrences
§ We will walk through a couple of scenarios

Using CA SYSVIEW for Real-Time Problem Solving
MUF is Looping (Heavy CPU or IO Consumption)
§ Issue DCTASKS and look at executing (ACTIVE) task
– Hit enter does the task switch or is the same task always active
§ Same task active – could mean a looping or runaway task
– Does the RSEQNUM change
§ No – then the task is “running away” in MUF
§ Yes – then the application is running away – driving MUF
§ Different task active means MUF is processing as expected
– Are the RSEQNUM changing
§ NO – then several heavy tasks in MUF
§ Yes – Then the tasks are driving MUF

§ Possible remediation
– Research looping jobs, if permissible
§ Cancel job/CICS task associated with task in MUF
§ Use REQABORT to cancel task in MUF
– Wait for a few minutes and repeat DCTASKs

MUF is Hung – Nothing is Happening
§ Issue DCTASKS and look at task display
– Hit enter does the task list change
§ If not, what are the tasks waiting on?
– Wait LXX (is the LXX FULL)
– Wait task
§ Are the tasks hung up waiting on each other
– NOT ACTIVE – MUF doesn’t believe there is any work to do

Things are Running but There Seems to be a lot More Activity Than Usual
§ Issue DCTASKS and look at task display
– Hit enter does the task list change
§ If things look like they are running but the workload seems high
– Start looking at other displays
§ DCRATES – is the MUF consuming CPU and IO
§ DCAREAIO (sort L-Reads d) – are there any surprises, is one area getting a lot of IO
§ DCTABREQ (sort requests d) – are there any surprises, is one table getting a lot of
requests
§ DCRETCOD, DCSQLCOD – are there a lot of failed requests going on

Recommended Approach
Establish a performance baseline that is used to measure and track
production environments. What’s normal for you shop.
Monitor Use CA SYSVIEW to regularly monitor the activity in your MUFs. Get to
know the Sysview displays as well as the MUF processing.
Alert
Use CA SYSVIEW displays to debug possible database processing
issues in real-time.
