34. History
A Peace Pole is a monument that
displays the message "May Peace
Prevail on Earth” in the language of
the country where it has been placed,
and usually 3 to 5 additional
translations. The message is referred
to as a peace prayer.
The first peace poles outside Japan were
constructed in 1983. Since then, an estimated
200,000 have been planted around the world in
over 190 countries.
35. • The idea of Peace Poles was first thought up by Masahisa Goi
after WWII in Japan.
• Mr. Goi believed that the message and prayer, has the
capacity to bring people of various cultures, faiths, and
traditions together in the spirit of universal love and oneness
by unifying the global heart and mind.
• The first seeds of peace were planted in 1955 in Ishikawa,
Japan where a small gathering of peace workers gathered
around Mr. Goi to listen to his philosophy and visions for a
better world. This was the beginning of the World Peace
Prayer Society, a genuine peace movement to spread the
message and prayer, May Peace Prevail On Earth.
36. • In 1976, the idea of placing the Peace
Message and Prayer on poles began to
gain popularity.
• When Mr. Goi passed on in 1980, his
adopted daughter, Masami Saionji,
inherited his legacy and was appointed
Chairperson of The World Peace Prayer
Society.
• The World Peace Sanctuary in
Wassaic, NY, is the international
home and headquarters of the
World Peace Prayer Society, The
Peace Pole Project and Peace Pals
International.
