Presented by Haris Gunawan, Deputy for Research and Development, Peat Restoration Agency, Peatland Restoration Agency (BRG), at "Online Workshop Series:Exploring Criteria and Indicators for Tropical Peatland Restoration", on 2 Sep 2020.
The way forward for the tropical peatland restoration should consider criteria and indicators holistically based on the four main pillars i.e. biophysical aspects, social aspects, economic aspects, and governance aspects. The speaker highlighted important role various government. and non-government agencies play in achieving the goal of peatland restoration and called for continued partnership moving forward.

Data to support 3R’s and Beyond 3R’s in this
PHU:
• LIDAR data
• Water Balance Analysis
• Peat rewetting Infrastructure existence
• Fire Danger Rating System
• Socio-Economic data
• Cultural value data
• Biodiversity and High Conservation Value Area

fire from land clearing
5. PHU Variabilities
(106 PHUs)
Example:
• Papua
• Comprehensive peat characteristic remain unknown
• Mendahara – Batanghari
• Establishment of Land Status is not followed by recovery
rate (level of degradation)
• Kubu Raya
• Hydrophobicity in peatland characteristic
• Batanghari – Air Hitam Laut
• Variety in microtopography of peatland landscape

6. The Way Forward
Conceptualization and design the frameworks for C & I based
on the four pillars holistically (Biophysics, Social, Economic
and Governance)
Indonesia and International cooperation consist of (from all
sector): Scientist, academia, practitioner, local communities,
multilevel governance/ non-governance bodies, they must
participate in refining and verifying the C & I of peatland
restoration
7. Wrap Up
• Prof. Maas è Peatland Restoration based on Water Balance; Peat must Wet!
• Ir. Tampubolon è Paludiculture strongly supports recovery of degraded peatland
ecosystem and increasing community livelihood
• Dr. Budisusanti è Regulation on C&I still relies on Biophysical Aspects (we must do
in-depth research to fill the gaps)
• Dr. Lera Miles è Indicator is scientifically valid, based on available data, responsive
to change in issue of interest, easily understandable, relevant, and IT IS USED
• Dr. Mumbunan è Implementation of Economic Indicator through domestic
mobilization of resources, Result Based Payment, Public-Private and blended finance
• Dr. Wardhana èBRG activities insight toward C&I development, suitable and precise
data must be used to established comprehensive C & I for peatland restoration
• Maria Nuutinen, M.S è Robust C & I must support halting the degradation and raise
awareness of the importance of successful ecosystem restoration
8. Key Issues to
Support
Criteria and
Indicator in
Peatland
Restoration
• 120 research projects of BRG has elicited that there are four essential
pillars In C & I in peatland restoration i.e. Biophysics, Social, Economy
and Governance which must be equally considered.
• At present regulation regarding C & I to restore Peatland Landscape
mostly focused in biophysical aspect. C & I for social-economic and
governance must be established.
• Gaps include: PHU variability, new economic paradigm, stakeholder
participation and governance
• Restoration measures differ between PHU’s. No silver bullet exist!
But, C & I must Scientifically valid, Based on reliable data,
Responsive to change in issue of interest, Easily understandable,
Relevant to user needs and It is used!
• We must use all available modalities, including all aspects data and
activities available to reach our goal “Beyond Sustainable Tropical
Peatland Landscape Management,” how we can generate positive
impact for communities from our effort in restoring the tropical
peatland landscape based on precise and suitable C and I for
Indonesia’s Peatland.
• Scientist, researcher, practitioner, local community, multilevel
governance bodies must participate in refining and and verifying the C
& I of peatland restoration
