Aim of the ARCHANGEL project
The ARCHANGEL project proposed using blockchain technology to verify the
integrity and provenance of digital records during the process of preserving the
records and when released.
The project used blockchain to record the checksums and other metadata from
records so that users could verify the integrity of records held:
• over lengthy periods of time,
• after periods of closure and
• throughout the curatorial processes

Key Properties of Blockchain
Distributed
Immutable
• Many participants involved in
each transaction
• Every participant has a copy
• Cannot edit the information
on the blockchain

What we learned
• IT department involvement – governance and policies in place
• Technical know-how and support for set-up
• Guidance on technology, terminology, set-up requirements and using the tool
• Practical value from being part of workflow
• People need to understand the technology to trust it

An e-Infrastructure is a distributed network of service nodes, residing on multiple sites and managed by one or more organizations allowing scientists residing at distant places to collaborate. They may offer a multiplicity of facilities as-a-service, supporting data sharing and usage at different levels of abstraction. E-Infrastructures can have different implementations (Andronico et al 2011). A major distinction is between (i) Data e-Infrastructures, i.e. digital infrastructures promoting data sharing and consumption to a community of practice (e.g. MyOcean, Blanc 2008) and (ii) Computational e-Infrastructures, which support the processes required by a community of practice using GRID and Cloud computing facilities (e.g. Candela et al. 2013). A more recent type of e-Infrastructure is the Hybrid Data Infrastructure (HDI) (Candela et al. 2010), i.e. a Data and Computational e-Infrastructure that adopts a delivery model for data management, in which computing, storage, data and software are made available as-a-Service. HDIs support, for example, data transfer, data harmonization and data processing workflows. Hybrid Data e-Infrastructures have already been used in several European and international projects (e.g. i-Marine 2011; EuBrazil OpenBio 2011) and their exploitation is growing fast supporting new projects and initiatives, e.g. Parthenos, Ariadne, Descramble. A particular HDI, named D4Science (Candela et al. 2009), has been used by communities of practice in the fields of biodiversity conservation, geothermal energy monitoring, fisheries management, and culture heritage. This e-Infrastructure hosts models and resources by several international organizations involved in these fields. Its capabilities help scientists to access and manage data, reuse data and models, obtain results in short time and share these results with other colleagues.

The main focus of Science Demonstrator sessions is to provide feedback to the EOSC community on the first experience of science demonstrators in the practical use of the emerging EOSC ecosystem. Each panel will consist of a representative of a Science Demonstrator that will provide an overview of their experiences in the use of emerging EOSC services. These sessions will help members of the scientific communities understanding the current state of maturity of the EOSC ecosystem and what is obtainable in a field of scientific research. It is also valuable to prospective Service Providers who wish to discover what are the challenges and opportunities that user communities might have to deal with, as a result of the adoption of their services. This session will focus on Social and Earth Sciences.

Abstract: The arrival and capabilities of Blockchain is set to change traditional supply chain activities. Consumers are increasingly demanding details about the products they purchase, the sources of the manufactured product and manufacturing details. Organisations are declaring that they strive to improve labour practices and minimise the environmental effect of manufacturing goods however consumers still have a limited view of supply chains. The increasing development of the digital economy, the internet of things (IOT) and the growing use of sensors providing information in supply chains is providing Blockchain leverage to streamline and create an efficient supply chain track and trace of all types of transactions more transparently and securely. This paper explores the adoption of Blockchain technology in supply chain transparency. Specifically, we examine whether Blockchain technology is a good fit for use in an Australian manufacturer supply chain. Blockchain allows us to have permissioned or permission-less distributed ledgers where stakeholders can interact with each other. We describe in detail how Blockchain works and the mechanism of hash algorithms, which allows for greater security of information. Using a single case study, we focus on the intricacies of this technology and present a summary of adoption for Blockchain technology. The adoption for using Blockchain technology has the potential to bring greater transparency, validity across the supply chain, and improvement of communication between all stakeholders involved.
