This document summarizes CILIP's activities from the past year and outlines plans for 2017. Key points include: a campaign to reinforce public libraries' statutory status that involved endorsements, a dedicated website, and meetings with MPs; representing the information sector in media; and gearing up for the 2017 elections. Plans for 2017 include reintroducing the APPG on Libraries, a new careers hub, and strategies on public library and information skills. The overall goals are to put information literacy and professional values at the heart of society and support members.

• Be positive and proactive
11. The fact is that that statutory duty requires the Minister to intervene. In fact, Ed Vaizey said that
central government can and will intervene if a council is “planning dramatic cuts”. Of course,
many councils are finding themselves in incredibly difficult situations. How many councils have
the Government actually intervened on, and to what effect? How many have they actually
called in to see whether they are meeting the statutory responsibility? This is an issue that this
Government cannot duck.
Lord Collins of Highbury (LAB)
More fundamentally, will the Minister reflect on the use to which we can put the Public
Libraries and Museums Act 1964? My fear is that what Lancashire is planning to do places it in
breach of the provisions of that Act.
Paul Maynard MP (Blackpool North & Cleveleys) (CON)
