We are a knowledge economy
“UK investment in intangible or knowledge assets has been greater than
that for tangible assets since the early 2000s.
In 2014 it stood at £133bn, as opposed to £121bn tangible investment.
Of that intangible spend training by firms accounts for £26bn,
organisational capital for £22bn, design £14bn, software £28bn, branding
£15bn and scientific R&D £19bn.”
UK Intangible Investment and Growth
UK Intellectual Property Office, 2016
ISO 30401:2018
The new ISO 30401:2018 standard “sets requirements
and provides guidelines for establishing,
implementing, maintaining, reviewing and improving
an effective management system for knowledge
management in organisations”.
A ‘people-centred’ definition of knowledge “as a human
or organisational asset enabling effective decisions and
action in context”.
Drafted using the same template as other ‘management
systems standards’ (eg. Quality Management Systems) –
providing an overarching framework rather than a
prescriptive standard.
Sharing best practice & new ideas
The launch of Information as an Asset and KM Chartership mark the
start of a big year for CILIP as we embrace our role as the
professional association for everyone working in Knowledge and
Information Management.
Through Facet, our in-house publisher, our magazine Information
Professional and our annual conferences in England (Manchester 3rd
and 4th July 2019), Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, we will be
featuring industry-leading K&IM practitioners from key organisations.
The KM Cookbook
CILIP are proud to publish the ‘KM Cookbook’ through Facet
Publishing as a pillar of our support for the international
Knowledge Management community.
Written by KM leaders Chris Collison, Paul Corney and Patricia
Lee Eng, the book features 16+ interviews with globally leading
brands from South & North America, Europe, Middle East &
Asia about their amazing Knowledge Management
programmes.
A key ‘bridge text’ – making the provisions of ISO 30401
accessible and relevant and showing how organisations can
meet or exceed the new standard.
www.facetpublishing.co.uk
Information as an Asset
CILIP is working with KPMG, CIO Connect and IK Springboard
to develop Information as an Asset, a new guide for large-
scale organisations to valuing their information assets &
developing their ‘information capability’.
An increasing recognition that competitive advantage and
efficiency come from people, knowledge and information more
than IT and policies.

Knowledge at Network Rail
Network Rail are leading a hugely
ambitious programme to digitise their
entire rail infrastructure – creating a
network of data, information, knowledge
and expertise that can be used to manage
and improve rail infrastructure in real time.
CILIP has been working with Network Rail to
support the development of their
‘information capability’ – the human
infrastructure of knowledge, competencies
and skills to ensure that this programme is
successful.
Our aim is to help Network Rail develop the
future-ready workforce they need to sustain
their transformation.
CILIP Workforce Development Strategy 2019-2024
9 key commitments to developing the Knowledge & Information Professional workforce:
1. The workforce is more diverse and representative of our communities
2. Employers are creating more opportunities for Information Professionals
3. There is greater mobility within and outside the Information Profession
4. Employers are able to recruit and retain people with the right skills and aptitudes
5. Our skillset is recognised and valued
6. Our professional skills are up-to-date and futureproof
7. More Information Professionals continue to up-skill and retrain to stay ahead of service needs
8. There is a new generation of leaders that have come through the Information Profession
9. There is a sector wide understanding of professionalism
What is a ‘professional’?
According to work carried out by Deloitte
and the Professional Associations Research
Network (PARN), a professional is someone
who:
• Builds trust
• Behaves ethically
• Strives for excellence
• Is a reflective practitioner
• Leads or instigates change
• Champions their profession
• Adds value

Professional Recognition
Skills & competencies
Culture & practice
Professionalism & standards
Professionalism links legal and statutory
requirements and ethical practice to
standards and qualifications.
Formalising skills and competencies gives
employers a model for CPD and workforce
development.
The aim is ‘standards not standardisation’.
We don’t want to take the creativity or
diversity out of KM. We want to create a
flexible mechanism to recognise the
professionalism of KM people.
Why become a ‘profession’?
Professional registration offers a range of benefits for practitioners, employers and the whole community:
Benefits for practitioners Benefits for employers Benefits for the community
• Recognition of skills/expertise
• Quality mark for employers
• Differentiation in the market
• Improved earning potential
• Commitment to ethics
• Quality assurance for clients
• Supports workforce planning
• Risk mitigation and good
governance
• Greater confidence in
outcomes/results
• Improved knowledge sharing
• Formalised routes into the
profession
• Access to Apprenticeships
• Credibility and trust
We need a pipeline to attract, retain and develop talent in Knowledge Management…
