Sustainable Agriculture & Global Food Security
– Monsanto pledged $10 million to improve rice & wheat yields by
developing highly educated breeders to serve as future agricultural
leaders
– Provides full package of support for Ph.D. students in the fields of rice or wheat
breeding (or programs to improve production of these staple crops)
– Program provides global perspective by requiring experience in both
Developed and Developing countries
– Experience work and mission of public sector research institutions
– Link institutions in developed and developing countries
– International Program currently supporting 38 scholars
– Represent 19 different countries
– 23 wheat / 15 rice projects
– Open to students (nationally and internationally) - Applications accepted from
November 1, 2011 through February 1, 2012

3. Eligibility Criteria
• Focus on a critical genetic constraint affecting rice or
wheat production, particularly in a developing country
• Completion of Master’s Degree or equivalent,
preferably in Plant Breeding, Genetics, or related
area.
• Program provides “World View” by
experiential learning in both developed and
developing countries.
– Developed country - Australia, Canada, Europe and USA
– Developing country – all other countries are emerging
economies or countries).
– Students need to identify research that will be accomplished
in each country in their PhD proposal.
4. Some questions that might need clarification
• Who is eligible to apply? Any student who will be
pursuing a PhD in Rice or Wheat Breeding. Students
having 2 or more years remaining on their PhD program
are encouraged to apply. PhD study for 3 years. With
justification up to 4 years will be supported by the
program.
• Are students from developed and developing
countries eligible to apply? Yes any PhD rice or wheat
breeding student anywhere in the World is eligible to
apply.
• How is the application submitted? Students need to go
to www.monsanto.com/mbbischolars or
http://mbbischolars.tamu.edu/ for forms and instructions,
then they need to work with their Major Professor
(Advisor) to fill in details of their program. The Major
Professor submits the application electronically.
• Applications are due between November 1st, 2011 to
February 1st, 2012. The same schedule will be followed
in 2013.
• All submissions are in English and transmitted
electronically.
