THE CHINA OUTBOUND TOURISM INDEX (COT INDEX) provides a simple but clear
indicator for the analysis and forecast of the development of China’s outbound
tourism:
• It is provided monthly and it is based on the insights of the members of the COTRI
China Outbound Tourism Expert Panel
• COTEP members are asked to take into account the development of the number of
Chinese outbound travellers, the amounts of expenses, the level of support by the
governments and the level of commitment of tourism companies and
organisations
• The numerical assessment is done in the form of single entries for the previous
and next year on a scale ranging between Minus 10 and Plus 10
• Of all submitted assessments the mean is calculated

For the China Outbound Tourism index readings in the first issue of C.O.M.I., 23 COTEP
members from all continents provided their assessments, forecasts and comments.
COTRI China Outbound Tourism Expert Panel rates prospects for July 2013 to June
2014 with a plus 6.3 reading. The evaluations:
• 21 experts saw a positive development in the past twelve months, only 2 saw it
negatively
• Increased awareness and intensified activities for the Chinese tourism source market
by the global tourism industry and institutions
• However, insights into the importance of China as an international tourism source
market still not sufficient
• New chances for niche products and smaller destinations due to the ongoing
sophistication of the demand
• Increased political support of outbound tourism by the new Chinese government and
implementation of less strict visa regulations in many destinations

COTRI China Outbound Tourism Expert Panel rates prospects for July 2013 to June 2014 with a plus 6.3 reading.
