3. Autobiography
I grew up in Whiteville,
North Carolina. Whiteville
is a rural, close-knit
community where I was
heavily involved in Girl
Scouts, academic clubs, and
athletics. I played soccer
and tennis extensively at
Whiteville High School
and enjoy hiking. I am
currently still involved
in intramural sports
involving soccer and
tennis. I also am still
involved with Girl Scouts
as I am the Social Media
and Marketing Intern for
Girl Scouts North Carolina
Coastal Pines in Raleigh.
My experiences as a girl
scout has helped shape me
as a person and I felt a
calling to give back to the
organization that gave so
much to me.
My family has been from
Whiteville for many
generations. We have a
family business of owning
the local newspaper in
Whiteville, The Whiteville
News Reporter, which has
been in our family since
the 1930s and have even won
a Pulitzer Prize. Growing
up in a newspaper family
has caused me to develop
a great passion for the
industry. As we know, the
newspaper industry is
seeing an economic cyclone
as much of their business
is moving to digital. My
ultimate goal is to find
a way for newspapers,
especially small community
newspapers, to survive
this digital movement. I
foresee this happening
through advertising and
developments of online
digital platforms.
Traveling is my favorite
hobby and my traveling
experiences have greatly
influenced my life as
they have introduced to
me to other cultures and
experiences. I studied
abroad in Austria and have
traveled to 15 different
countries over the course
of my life. My favorite
place that I have been is
New Zealand. This is one of
the few places in the world
that is truly untouched by
man and it infinitely more
beautiful because of that.
This was a family trip that
bonded our family closer
together, but also made us
all realize how beautiful
the world is in every
corner. The sites that I saw
in this beautiful country
will never be
forgotten.
I am now
a Junior
at UNC-
Chapel Hill
majoring in
Advertising
and Political
Science.
My past
experiences
include
interning at
a developing
advertising
agency, NR
Digital Media,
interning for
Girl Scouts-
NC Coastal
Pines as a
Marketing and
Social Media
intern, student
projects
working
directly with
clients, and
leadership
positions in my
sorority such
as social chair
and sisterhood
chair (event
planning).
I have an
upcoming
internship
position with
Clean Design
Advertising
Agency
this coming
summer. I look
forward to
expanding my
understanding
and fascination
with
advertising and
hope that this
endeavor leads
me in a positive
direction
towards my
career goals.

4. Professional
Ambitions
My professional
interests lay
in Advertising.
I enjoy the
creativity and
the endless
possibilities
to maneuver
advertising and
marketing into
our consumer
world and
using it for
the betterment
of society.
My long-term
career goal is
to master my
understanding
of advertising,
particularly
digital
marketing and
advertising,
in my first
5 years as a
professional.
After this,
I plan to
transfer this
knowledge
to develop
strong digital
advertising
departments in
newspapers. I am
particularly
interested in
small local
newspapers as
I have grown
up in a family
owned local
newspaper and
have seen the
traumatic hits
the industry
has taken, yet
the invaluable
importance of
the purpose
they have
in holding a
balance in our
society as a
democracy.
Empowering
and motivating
others,
managing
conflict, and
being a good
communicator
are some
of my core
strengths. My
professional
and personal
values are
being ethical,
genuine, and
approachable.
These
strengths
will allow me
to prosper in
the working
environment,
especially
when working
with others.
I am a person
who values
relationships
with people,
as I feel
efficiency
and quality
work comes
from those
with a strong
relationship.
I am interested
in finding a
career that
can foster
my strengths
as well as
improve my
weaknesses.

Poster Series
The Amani Children’s Foundation cares for children orphaned by
poverty and AIDS in Kenya. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of the
jewelry and gifts goes towards their efforts.
Amani is the Swahili word
for peace. We seek to bring
peace and a positive living and
learning environment for the
more than 2.2 million orphans
in Kenya. Amani focuses on the
infants because they are the
most vulnerable portion of the
population, but also the
portion of the population with
the most potential. Very little
attention has been focused on
abandoned infants due to a
lack of financial resources
and specialized care
required to take care of
babies. Yet, if a child is adopted or
raised to become a positive
contributing member of society, they
are reaching acrosscultural barriers
and taking a stand for children and
against the impact of HIV/AIDS.
Carolina for
Amani is Chapel
Hill's branch of The
Amani Children's Foundation.
It is a non-profit organization
that seeks to build bridges
between Kenyan and
American communities.
Specifically, we are by
sponsoring The New
Life Home Orphanages.
Amani Children's Found
is a registered 501c3 non
profit organization based out
of Winston Salem, North Carolina and
was founded in 2004. Through their
partnership with the New Life Homes, Amani
helps care for orphaned and HIV-positive
children in six different locations
across Kenya.
Project 2 was my favorite project as we had to synthesis
typography, imagery, and representation. This was also
a significant project because we were able to choose
a significant event and upcoming event for a campus
organization of our choosing. Carolina For Amani is a
campus organization that I have been involved in for three
years and am very passionate about its purpose and what is
achieves. It is a very fun, light-hearted club, which is why
I chose vibrant colors and exciting mosaics. However, it
stands to help those in need, particularly in Kenya, which
is why I chose striking images of the young children that
the organization is attempting to help.

Homelessness is seen from a couple of different demographics.
Single adults are the most common to be homeless, then
comes families and last is unaccompanied youth. For a
homeless person on the streets on an average night in
some of the 25 most populated cities in the United
States, there were 22,652 single adults, 3,729
persons in families, and 390 unaccompanied
youth. These numbers show
homeless on the streets. There are different
numbers for those in emergency shelters
and housing.
Homelessness
in the
United States
Homelessness in the United States is an area with a lot of political attention but what seems to be
such little social change. The US has put into place the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban
Development in 2012, but there are still tens of thousands of people on the streets of
all genders, races and ages. There are many trends that are associated with
homelessness including mental illness, disability, domestic violence
victims and veterans. Currently there are three different types of
shelter available for homelessness in major US cities that
include emergency shelters, transitional housing, and
permanent housing.
This project allowed us to explore informational
design and create an information graphic as well as the
synthesis of information visualization and information
design to present a data driven narrative about a topic
of our choice. I am passionate about the homeless, in
particular the homeless on Franklin street, and thought
this opportunity would be great to present the shocking
data about the struggles they face. This is a sad topic,
which is why the theme is very dark and grungy.
Homelessness is a serious issue and needs to be taken in a
serious tone. This info graphic represents the hardships
of the homeless which we so frequently overlook everyday.

Visual
Identity
For my visual identity, I was asked to brand
myself with a visual identity with my own
personal logo, business card, and letterhead.
We had to used Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
for this project. The five words that I chose to
describe me are sincere, light-hearted, leader,
colorful, and ambitious.
I am a very caring and compassionate
person who is inspired by the people are
her. I love being outside and traveling,
and I particularly enjoy hiking. I grew up
in small town in a family newspaper and
my career goal is to find a way for small
newspapers to find a new channel of revenue
so they can survive the transition to
digital.

AcknowledgementsI would like to offer my special thanks to
my Professor Dr. Barnes for all the knowledge
he has taught me in learning graphic
design. I started with little to no knowledge
of the endless field of study and Dr. Barnes
provided me with very valuble skills that
I will carry on with me in my professional
and personal life.
I would also like the express my great
appreciation to my parents for their support
throughout my life and shaping me into the
person I am today. I have them to thank for
my passions and interests, as I am convinced
they exist only because they showed me the
true value.
