What are you learning right
now ?
Understand
what
Andragogy is.
Evaluate if
the
information
truly applies
to adult
learning
Be reminded
of what you
might already
know
about adult
learning.
3. The
Theorists
and Theories
Malcolm Shepherd
Knowles (1913 –
1997)
Andragogy:
The art and science
of adult learning
Robert Mills Gagné
(1916 –2002)
Conditions of Learning
“ ...I think, pretty much all my
life, my purpose in doing
research has been, to find,
how human learning can be
made more affective and
more efficient…”
(Gagné, 1980)
4. What you already know… Maybe…
Are these the 4 principals of adult learning?
1. Involvement
Adults want to be a part of the planning
and assessment of their own instruction.
2. Experience
Experiences both positive and negative
creates an opportunity for learning.
3. Relevance and Importance
Adults want their learning to be immediately
useful and have an effect on their jobs and
personal lives.
4. Problem Orientated
Adults want their learning to focus on proble
solving, not fancy or wordy content-oriented
Choose one
9. 3. Readiness to
Learn
The learners’ readiness or ‘want’ to learn
becomes more related to social roles and
needs.
10. 4. Orientation to
Learning
Knowledge application becomes immediate.
“Therefore, he enters into education with a
problem-centered orientation to learning”
(Knowles, 1973, p.48).
13. Why use this
theory for my
course?
Audience:
Between ages 30-65 and very global.
Nature of Course:
Training course, which needs to be applied
directly to their workplace.
14.
15. Just in case, let’s check:
1. Gain attention
2. Inform learner objectives
3. Recall prior knowledge
4. Present new information
5. Provide guidance
6. Elicit performance
7. Provide feedback
8. Assess performance
9. Enhance and transfer

Thank you, sir, and we are grateful for that.
Andragogy, or otherwise known as the art and science of adult learning, is a theory attributed to Malcolm Shepherd Knowles, while Robert Mills Gagné is responsible for the Theory of Learning or known as the Conditions of Learning.

Now, let’s have a look at what you might already know.
According to Knowles, these are the 4 principals of adult learning. Or are they?
Read through them and decide for yourself. Then hover over the answer best suited to your opinion, to see your result.

The first assumption is self- directed learning , where it is assumed that … Adults have a greater self-concept and by growing up, they move from dependent learners to independent learners.

The forth assumption is the idea that an adult’s orientation to learning changes and knowledge application becomes immediate. Knowles supposes that adults enter…

The last assumption is that learning motivation changes for adults, as their motivation becomes more internal.

Why did I choose Andragogy as my main theory?
The online course I will be designing has the following elements:
The audience will consist of adults between the ages of 30 and 65 from various countries.
The very nature of this course is a training course that must be applied directly into the learner’s work environment. Both these theories will facilitate a strong course design concept in this case.

OK… I know I am not Gagné but lets try:
Did you though… Go to the next slide and decide if you agree with Knowles.
