This document provides 8 ways to ensure effective learning: 1) Keep learning somatic, visual, and intellectual using the SAVI model; 2) Think about the content, process, and learner reaction using CPR; 3) Set up learning environments and allow 70% of time for learners to do activities; 4) Manage emotions to deepen learning; 5) Ensure learning mirrors real-life contexts; 6) Structure learning simply using the 4 P's model of preparation, presentation, practice, and performance; 7) Layer learning from big picture to details; 8) Design learning for learner creation rather than spoonfeeding content.
2. Keep things SAVI
SOMATIC Learning by moving and doing
Lear ning by listening and talking
VISUAL Learning by seeing and picturing
INTELLECTUAL Learning by problem solving and reflecting
3. Think C.P.R.
Learning through…
Content: the subject of the learning
Process: the way in which they lear n
Reaction: helping learners understand why they respond in a particular way
4. Set up, stand back,
pull together
Work on the 70:30 principle. 70% of
time learners learn by doing, 30% is all
about you. Introducing
Providing clarity
Coaching and challenging
Pulling together meaningful reflections
Helping learners plan focused actions
6. Ensure learning
mirrors real life
Explore learning and ideas in context to deepen meaning.
E.g. if doing customer service training for a Call Centre don’t strip out
the communications element. This will not fully equip the Agent to
deliver exceptional service.
Rather, do comms skills with them on real issues whilst processing on
the system and most of all do it fast… they need to respond fast on
every call.
7. Structure provide
simplicity
We love David Meier’s 4
P’s and use this to
guide how we plan
learning solutions.
1. Preparation
Help learners apply
what they have
learned in into their
real world
4.
4. Performance
3. 2. Presentation
3. Practice
Build intrigue and
commitment
Shape an interactive
process to engage
learners in learning
Provide opportunities
for learners to play
and practice with
learning in a safe
environment
8. Layer learning
Start with big picture to provide context and then drill down.
Remember the brain is infinitely powerful and can
process many things at once, and, at work does. This
means add systematic complexity to learning to keep
the brain interested.
9. Design for creation
Avoid spoonfeeding content at all costs
Instead help learners create
their own learning within a
strong context.
