Sun Chemical - Inventory Management Fiori Applications
Design Thinking through Delivery: A Case Study
Executive Summary
➢ Sun Chemical needed a way to keep better track of inventory and forecasting in
it’s InPlant locations.
➢ Prior to this project there was no insight into how InPlant locations were ordering
materials, keeping safety stock, and keeping track of inventory.
➢ Sun Chemical engaged Mindset to lead a two-stage process of Design
Thinking and Agile Development to deliver four SAP Fiori applications for
InPlant Managers.
Stage 1: User-centric Design Thinking
What is Design Thinking?
This process, originating and popularized by d.school at Stanford is a quick and
effective method for clearly defining both an important business problem, and a
tested prototype. This overview is intended to walk the team through the defined
steps of this innovation process that accelerate the ability to deliver a qualified
design and high resolution prototype for a potential solution.

Not all resources are required for all sessions. Typical Design Thinking
engagements are 3 weeks, with the largest commitment required during the

The UX team does up-front

Problem Statement: Today, InPlant
locations have very manual
processes/tools to track inventory,
incoming orders, forecasting, and other
SCM related activities. With this,
SunChemical does not have insight into
InPlant location usage/planning of inks
that they do with their own plants.

empathy with the end users.

Ideate
Everyone in the DTW takes 5-10
minutes to sketch ideas and come
up with new ways to solve the
problem statement on their own.
The group then comes back
together to discuss common
themes and ideas

Prototype
Leveraging the lo-res prototypes as a
foundation, a hi-res, interactive
prototype is created to define the
potential solution in great detail.

Test
Users run through scenarios
on the prototype(s) and
provide feedback on potential
adjustments and
improvements.

Design Thinking Deliverables
1. Documented insights from users, business, and IT
2. Low and High res prototypes representing the potential solution
3. Initial backlog of user stories that represents the application to be built
Design Thinking is a proven process that enables you to identify and clarify
complex business problems and their solutions while building engagement
and excitement with end users.
Within 15 days all Design Thinking deliverables above were complete.

Agile SAP Development
Our core approach is consistent with basic Agile Scrum best practices and with Sun
Chemical we focused on the following:
● Small (5 person) scrum team
○ Architect, Scrum Master, Dev Lead, Developers
● Focus on Backlog Health
○ Weekly backlog refinement with Product Owner and Dev Team
● 2 week sprints
○ Velocity measured around 60 points per sprint.
○ After refinement there was backlog of 190 points which meant development
would take 3.5 sprints to complete
● Demo early & often
○ Done with Product Owner and DTW contributors
○ Product Owner is the only team member who can call User Stories “Done”
● Learn & Apply
○ Demo feedback applied to the backlog to be refined and prioritized

Product Delivery
● After initial development was
completed we had a full
working product ready to be
tested.
● QA testing was one full week.
Only a few minor issues were
found because of our demo
early and often philosophy
● Four Fiori Apps were
completed in seven weeks

Executive Summary ➢ Sun Chemical needed a way to keep better track of inventory and forecasting in it’s InPlant locations. ➢ Prior to this project there was no insight into how InPlant locations were ordering materials, keeping safety stock, and keeping track of inventory. ➢ Sun Chemical engaged Mindset to lead a two-stage process of Design Thinking and Agile Development to deliver four SAP Fiori applications for InPlant Managers.
  • 3. Stage 1: User-centric Design Thinking
  • 4. What is Design Thinking? This process, originating and popularized by d.school at Stanford is a quick and effective method for clearly defining both an important business problem, and a tested prototype. This overview is intended to walk the team through the defined steps of this innovation process that accelerate the ability to deliver a qualified design and high resolution prototype for a potential solution. © 2017 Mindset Consulting, LLC - Confidential

With this, SunChemical does not have insight into InPlant location usage/planning of inks that they do with their own plants.

Agile SAP Development Our core approach is consistent with basic Agile Scrum best practices and with Sun Chemical we focused on the following: ● Small (5 person) scrum team ○ Architect, Scrum Master, Dev Lead, Developers ● Focus on Backlog Health ○ Weekly backlog refinement with Product Owner and Dev Team ● 2 week sprints ○ Velocity measured around 60 points per sprint. ○ After refinement there was backlog of 190 points which meant development would take 3.5 sprints to complete ● Demo early & often ○ Done with Product Owner and DTW contributors ○ Product Owner is the only team member who can call User Stories “Done” ● Learn & Apply ○ Demo feedback applied to the backlog to be refined and prioritized February 2017 © 2017 Mindset Consulting, LLC - Confidential
  • 17. Product Delivery ● After initial development was completed we had a full working product ready to be tested. ● QA testing was one full week.
