If you spend six weekends a semester at Mount St. Mary’s Weekend College,
you’ll turn your typical Saturday and Sunday into a life-changing weekend by
working toward your bachelor’s degree.
You take the same courses and earn the same degrees as our traditional age
students. The instructors are high-caliber Mount St. Mary’s College faculty who
respect the life experience you bring to the classroom.
Located on the historic and tranquil Doheny Campus of Mount St. Mary’s
College in downtown Los Angeles, Weekend College is an innovative approach
to learning that allows working adults to earn their degree in four years while
continuing to fulfill their full-time obligations to their careers and families.
The goal of Mount St. Mary’s is to provide adult students with all of the
advantages of a small private college in a flexible, weekend-friendly format.
The Mount ranks among the top liberal arts colleges in California. Its measure
of success is graduates who are committed to using their knowledge and skills
to better themselves, their environments, and the world.
Turn your weekend getaway...
... into a weekend get-ahead.

Reasons
Weekend College
Is Right for You
1. You have 52 weekends a year, but it only takes
18 to earn a year of credit toward your degree.
2. No driving to campus during rush hour. You
won’t be late or miss class due to heavy
commuter traffic.
3. Convenient location in downtown Los Angeles
near public transportation and freeways.
4. You’ll have more energy on the weekend than
you would at the end of a hard work day.
5. Your instructors are the same high-quality
Mount St. Mary’s faculty who teach during
the week.
6. The faculty appreciate the life and work
experience you bring to class.
7. Weekend College students receive the same
curriculum, same degree…and even attend the
same graduation ceremony as traditional Mount
St. Mary’s College students.
8. It’s easier to arrange for child care if it’s only on
18 weekends, rather than one or more nights a
week for an evening program.
9. The format is tailored to fit your life.
Since most of your
fellow students are
mid-career adults
like you, they, and
the faculty, know
the challenges you
will face. Family and
work issues come up
for everyone, but the
incredible advantage
of Weekend College is
that it requires only 18
weekends a year. You
can organize your work,
family, and education
much more easily.

3Fitting Weekend College into Your Life
Every degree candidate must complete 124 academic units for graduation. Adults who work
full time can usually carry three courses (or nine units of academic credit) per semester.
Weekend College semesters are four months long, which adds up to 27 units per year. Since
most adults transfer credits from other institutions, they can usually complete their degree in
less than four years.
Can you carry three courses in a semester? Ask yourself: Can I attend class on the six
required weekends for nine hours each day? Can I set aside two hours a day between the
instructional weekends to keep on top of the homework for all three courses? If the answers
are yes, then you can handle a full course-load.
Schedule of Courses
On instructional weekends, students attend classes all day Saturday and Sunday. A course
schedule is published in advance of each semester allowing students to plan their courses
in consultation with an advisor. It is possible to register for one, two, or three courses. Each
course meets for six hours a weekend, but usually not more than two consecutive hours.
Students adapt quickly to the innovative scheduling because it is tailored to the learning
styles and optimal attention spans of the typical adult learner.

Weekend College offers nine accredited bachelor’s degree programs.
BA IN ENGLISH
The English major explores how people communicate and reflect on their existence. It
gives sustained training in critical thinking, writing, creative self-expression, and the
perceptive reading of literature. Because English majors get extensive experience in
analyzing, solving problems, researching, organizing, studying human behavior, writing,
and speaking, they have the background for careers in law, business management,
journalism, public relations, teaching, public administration, and many areas of writing.
BS IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION
This degree program is designed for those who wish to advance their careers in
business. The courses focus on management, information systems, organizational
behavior, business law, accounting, marketing and finance. Students can select a
concentration in: Marketing, International Business, Management, Accounting or
create their own specialization. The program is structured to incorporate workplace
experience into the fabric of the classroom. All courses emphasize discussion, group
projects, and written communication.
BA IN ENGLISH AND BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION
This joint major combines the liberal arts emphasis of the English major with the
professional preparation of the business administration major.
BA IN LIBERAL ARTS
The liberal arts major encourages the study of human beings and societies from the
multiple perspectives of the humanities and the social sciences. Students can explore
and combine insights into human art and activity that are revealed by psychology,
literature, art, history, philosophy, religious studies, music, sociology, economics, and
anthropology. The liberal arts major provides a solid background for graduate work
in law, public administration, and most fields in the humanities and social sciences.
Students who want a professional specialization should combine the major with a
minor like business administration or psychology.

A Major Decision
Pick the major that sounds the most
enticing or that best suits your career.

Sandra P. Pena
student
I came to Mount St. Mary’s College as a
traditional student 22 years ago and earned
my associate’s degree.  I liked the one-on-
one support. Twenty years later, I chose the
Mount because of my past experience here
and to accomplish my dream of earning my
bachelor’s degree in business administration
from my alma mater.
I work 50 to 60 hours a week in banking
and in addition to that I’m not at home
on Weekend College weekends, so I asked
my family if I should keep going and they
said, “Don’t stop!” It has been one the best
decisions I ever made.

The great thing about Weekend College
is that you meet people who are going
through the same thing as you, and we
receive a tremendous amount of support
from the faculty. It’s like a big family.
Mount St. Mary’s College • WEEKEND COLLEGE • www.WeekendCollege.org 7
(Majors continued from page 4)
BA IN FILM AND SOCIAL JUSTICE
Focuses on a strong liberal arts, social justice, and social science foundation, along
with the technical and professional skills necessary to prepare adult students for
careers in the film, television, and digital media industries. Students receive assistance
with creating a career plan, filmography, resume, finding internships, and graduate
opportunities. They may choose an area of emphasis (production, social justice, or
marketing), or may opt for a general film degree with no emphasis.
BA IN GERONTOLOGY
This degree program explores the biopsychosocial dimensions of human life development, with
a focus on the rapidly expanding aging population of the U.S. Gerontology is interdisciplinary
with courses drawn from gerontology, sociology, biology, philosophy, and religious studies.
Career options include case management and care management, social work, and non-profit
or for-profit management. The major also provides preparation for graduate studies in social
work, public policy, law, and research.
BA IN RELIGIOUS STUDIES
This major is designed to provide an academic foundation for a career related to religious
studies or to ministry in mainstream Christian churches. It can also lead to further graduate
study in theology or religion.
(Majors continue on page 8)
Mount St. Mary’s College • WEEKEND COLLEGE • www.WeekendCollege.org8
(Majors continued from page 7)
BA IN SOCIOLOGY
This major studies human behavior within a multitude of contexts, from the family,
the community, and the workplace to the regional, national, and global arenas. It
helps students prepare for professional careers in such areas as criminology, race/
ethnic relations, law enforcement, and community relations, as well as providing a
solid foundation for graduate studies in social work, counseling, public policy, urban
development, or law school.
BS IN SOCIAL WORK
The courses in this major challenge students to understand what it means to advocate for some
of the nation’s neediest residents.Taking a biopsychosocial approach to understanding human
behavior, you will learn about human anatomy, human psychology, families, couples, juvenile
crime, health and illness, caregiving for elders, death and dying. You will also acquire strong
practical skills in case management, qualitative and quantitative research methods, statistical
analysis, identifying and dealing with ethical problems, and actually working with clients in
real-life settings. The program is preparation for either an immediate professional career or
for graduate studies in social work. The demand for social workers is high and is projected
to continue to grow in the future, particularly in healthcare, gerontology, substance abuse
rehabilitation, adoption services, foster care, juvenile justice, grief counseling, job training, and
emergency or disaster relief.
Call the Weekend College for more details at 213.477.2866.
INTERACTION AMONG THE PROGRAMS
Because these degree programs are run concurrently, students are free to choose electives
outside their major. Business majors, for example, can enhance their learning by choosing
courses in literature, philosophy, history, psychology, and political science, while liberal arts and
English majors can seek the challenge of business courses.
MINORS
Because of the variety
of business and liberal
arts courses offered within
the Weekend College
format, students who
wish to specialize in a
secondary discipline can
supplement their major
area of interest with any
of these 11 minors:
Art history
Business Administration
English
Gerontology
History
Philosophy
Political Science
Pre-law
Psychology
Religious Studies
Sociology

I tried other schools, but when it was
a choice between putting food on the
table or going to class, work always won.
Weekend College is more convenient. It’s
on the weekend, but not every weekend.
The convenience and reputation were the
two top reasons I came here.
Christy A. Cannariato
Mount St. Mary’s College • WEEKEND COLLEGE • www.WeekendCollege.org10
Christy A. Cannariato, alumna
When I was going to school here, I worked 60 hours
during the week, and the weekends I reserved solely for
my education. I loved that I could compartmentalize work
and school rather than have to switch gears to do both
work and school in the same day.

I attended evening classes for court reporting and for
my master’s degree, but in those types of commuter
programs, with students rushing to and from class, I never
got close to other students.  Weekend College is much
more collegial. You bond in the same way that students
bond in traditional undergraduate programs.

Dr. Christy A. Cannariato, faculty member, English
The creativity and work ethic among the Weekend
College students is amazing. For example, I was teaching
a class on Renaissance literature.  At that time the
national economy was starting to tank, so I thought
it might be interesting if the students wrote a poem
about the contemporary state of the economy using
iambic pentameter with the suggested title “Ode to
the Economy.”  The project wasn’t on the syllabus, so
it couldn’t count toward their grades, but I asked them
to try it just for fun, and we made a contest out of it
with small prizes awarded.  I was astounded by their
enthusiasm for this project!  Every student contributed a
poem, and the quality was really quite impressive. These
students were already insanely busy, and they still found
the time to do this extra project.
I tell my students on the first day of every semester
that my being an alum is a double-sided coin for them.
Because I went through the program, I understand
the challenges they face, and I design and schedule
assignments and exams with those challenges in
mind.  However, because I graduated from this program, I
know what’s possible.  I don’t dumb down the curriculum
for them.  I expect just as much, if not more, from
Weekend College students as I ever did from traditional
university students.  Each semester, Weekend College
students exceed my expectations. The small class sizes
and student enthusiasm make these classes more akin
to honors-level seminars than to typical undergraduate
courses.
   Been There, Done That
Christy attended Weekend College and earned her bachelor of arts in Liberal Arts in
1996. After earning a master’s in English from California State University, Long Beach
in 1999, and a Ph.D. in English from University of California, Santa Barbara in 2007,
she returned to Mount St. Mary’s and began teaching literature at Weekend College
in 2008. All the while, she has continued her career as a court reporter.

“One” Singular
Sensation:
One-Unit Courses
In addition to the main
three-unit courses, the
Weekend College offers
workshops known as
“one-unit courses.”Each
begins and ends on a single
weekend.Three or four “one-
unit weekends”are inserted
among the six regular course
weekends. Students can
earn their degrees faster by
increasing their course load
from nine units a semester
to as many as 12 or 13 with
these courses.
Randal
Cummings
faculty member,
religious
studies
The students at the Weekend College
generally arrive with a great deal
of life experience, maturity, and
professional skill sets, and are often
quite advanced in their own career
paths. This brings a great amount of
real-world interaction into classroom
discussions and student presentations
that would be difficult to match in
undergraduate programs elsewhere.
I treat the Weekend College students
as though they are colleagues. Many
of the student accomplishments are
outstanding and the papers and
presentations already reflect post-
graduate level skills. As a result, our
graduates come out of here with a
great sense of accomplishment, self-
actualization, and confidence.

Group or One-On-One Information Sessions
Group Information Sessions are held twice a semester to
acquaint prospective students with Weekend College. You
may meet personally with an academic advisor at a time
that’s convenient for you without any obligation. If you
have student copies of college transcripts, we can make an
unofficial preliminary assessment of transcript credit to
estimate the time it might take to complete your bachelor’s
degree at Weekend College.
Application Process
• Call to get a printed application, 213.477.2866, or apply
online at www.WeekendCollege.org.
• Pay the application fee.
• Request to have official transcripts mailed to Weekend
College from every college or university previously
attended.
• If you have not completed at least 24 units (approximately
one year) of college study, request an official transcript
from your high school or an official copy of your GED.
• If you will need financial aid for your first semester, speak
with the Financial Aid Office at least two months before
your start date to complete the appropriate forms.
Acceptance Into the Program
Every application will be acknowledged by mail within
48 hours of its receipt on campus. As soon as all official
transcripts have been received, your file will be presented
to the Committee on Admissions. Committee meetings
are held weekly to expedite the process and avoid long
interim periods between inquiry and enrollment. In selecting
potential candidates for the program, Mount St. Mary’s
College is principally interested in adults who are committed
to completing their degree, who have the requisite time-
management skills and motivation to function successfully
within the unusual weekend format, and who are comfortable
with the level of maturity that prevails among the student
body at the Weekend College. Students are admitted three
times each year—for the fall, spring, or summer. Once you
receive a letter of acceptance, you should telephone the
Weekend College Office for further consultation and a
course-planning session.
Admission — Taking the First Steps
Mount St. Mary’s College • WEEKEND COLLEGE • www.WeekendCollege.org 15
Getting Started and Selecting Courses
You should visit the campus to meet personally with
your advisor to select courses before the first semester of
attendance. By the time of this meeting, a transcript analysis
has been prepared by the Office of Advisement, and informed
decisions can be made about appropriate course choices. Or
you can take care of this by a telephone conference. Once
you are enrolled, most of the advising and consultation about
program planning are done by telephone and e-mail.
Orientation and Registration
On a Saturday prior to the first semester of enrollment in
the Weekend College, you will attend a half-day Orientation
session. At this time details of classroom locations, financial
aid, and business office transactions are explained, and final
questions answered. You purchase books, collect a syllabus
for each course in which you are registered, and learn about
advance assignments that faculty expect to be presented at
the first class meeting. These assignments usually amount to
some preliminary reading and sometimes a short paper or
autobiographical sketch to assist the instructor in assessing
your own and your group’s preparation for the course. These
assignments help to maximize the teaching/learning time on
the first weekend and launch students immediately into full
participation in the academic enterprise.
Placement Testing
On Orientation day, there is a short placement test in
mathematics. For anyone coming to college for the first
time, this is extremely important. No specific preparation is
required and it should not be a basis for concern; it is not
used for admissions decisions, but rather merely to assure that
you enroll in the correct level of instruction.
CLEP Examination
Mount St. Mary’s College gives academic credit for work that
has been successfully completed through the College Level
Examination Program of the College Board. Information on
this outside testing is available from the Weekend College
Office. CLEP evaluates the equivalent of lower-division
course work; ACT/PEP examinations in upper-division
courses are also accepted for college credit.
Degree Planning
Once you have started Weekend College, begin planning
your future semesters in advance. To be certain you are on the
correct path toward your degree, you must consult with your
academic advisor every semester before you enroll in your
next semester’s classes.
Mount St. Mary’s College • WEEKEND COLLEGE • www.WeekendCollege.org16
Tuition Reimbursement
Many companies provide full or partial payment of
tuition for their employees. Ask your human resources
or personnel officer about tuition assistance for higher
education. These benefits may come in such forms as
tuition reimbursement, payment for books and supplies,
flex-time at work, time off for attendance at classes, or
help with child care.
Deferred Payments
Students can defer their tuition payment over a period of
four equal installments during the course of a semester.
After the 25 percent required deposit has been paid,
deferred payment arrangements may be made with the
Business Office at the time of registration. The current
semester’s tuition must be paid in full before a student
will be permitted to enroll in any future semester.
Credit Card Payments
Students may charge their tuition payments on Visa,
MasterCard, American Express, or Discover.
Veteran’s Benefits
The Mount is an approved institution for veterans under
Title 38 of the United States Code. Men and women
who may qualify for Veterans Educational Benefits
should contact their local Veterans Administration Office
to discuss their eligibility for awards and to procure the
necessary forms. The Weekend College participates fully in
the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill and the Yellow Ribbon Program.
Financial Aid
Financial aid applicants should contact the Office of
Student Financing at least 10 weeks prior to their start
date. Nearly 90 percent of Weekend College students
receive financial aid.  The aid is most commonly in the
form of student loans, but there are also scholarships
specifically for Weekend College students. By filling
out a single financial aid form — the Free Application
for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) — you will be
notified of all the sources of aid for which you are
eligible. The Office of Student Financing at 213.477.2562
can send one to you. Or you can apply online at
www.fafsa.edu.gov. When you are asked to fill in the
Federal School Code in Section 5, enter 001243.
Ways to Finance Your Education
If you do not plan to pay for your education with private funds, several other financing choices are available.

  • 3. Mount St. Mary’s College • WEEKEND COLLEGE • www.WeekendCollege.org 1 If you spend six weekends a semester at Mount St. Mary’s Weekend College, you’ll turn your typical Saturday and Sunday into a life-changing weekend by working toward your bachelor’s degree. You take the same courses and earn the same degrees as our traditional age students. The instructors are high-caliber Mount St. Mary’s College faculty who respect the life experience you bring to the classroom. Located on the historic and tranquil Doheny Campus of Mount St. Mary’s College in downtown Los Angeles, Weekend College is an innovative approach to learning that allows working adults to earn their degree in four years while continuing to fulfill their full-time obligations to their careers and families. The goal of Mount St. Mary’s is to provide adult students with all of the advantages of a small private college in a flexible, weekend-friendly format. The Mount ranks among the top liberal arts colleges in California. Its measure of success is graduates who are committed to using their knowledge and skills to better themselves, their environments, and the world. Turn your weekend getaway... ... into a weekend get-ahead.
  • 4. 9 5 8 2 74 36 1 Mount St. Mary’s College • WEEKEND COLLEGE • www.WeekendCollege.org2 Reasons Weekend College Is Right for You 1. You have 52 weekends a year, but it only takes 18 to earn a year of credit toward your degree. 2. No driving to campus during rush hour. You won’t be late or miss class due to heavy commuter traffic. 3. Convenient location in downtown Los Angeles near public transportation and freeways. 4. You’ll have more energy on the weekend than you would at the end of a hard work day. 5. Your instructors are the same high-quality Mount St. Mary’s faculty who teach during the week. 6. The faculty appreciate the life and work experience you bring to class. 7. Weekend College students receive the same curriculum, same degree…and even attend the same graduation ceremony as traditional Mount St. Mary’s College students. 8. It’s easier to arrange for child care if it’s only on 18 weekends, rather than one or more nights a week for an evening program. 9. The format is tailored to fit your life. Since most of your fellow students are mid-career adults like you, they, and the faculty, know the challenges you will face. Family and work issues come up for everyone, but the incredible advantage of Weekend College is that it requires only 18 weekends a year. You can organize your work, family, and education much more easily. 9
  • 5. Mount St. Mary’s College • WEEKEND COLLEGE • www.WeekendCollege.org 3 3Fitting Weekend College into Your Life Every degree candidate must complete 124 academic units for graduation. Adults who work full time can usually carry three courses (or nine units of academic credit) per semester. Weekend College semesters are four months long, which adds up to 27 units per year. Since most adults transfer credits from other institutions, they can usually complete their degree in less than four years. Can you carry three courses in a semester? Ask yourself: Can I attend class on the six required weekends for nine hours each day? Can I set aside two hours a day between the instructional weekends to keep on top of the homework for all three courses? If the answers are yes, then you can handle a full course-load. Schedule of Courses On instructional weekends, students attend classes all day Saturday and Sunday. A course schedule is published in advance of each semester allowing students to plan their courses in consultation with an advisor. It is possible to register for one, two, or three courses. Each course meets for six hours a weekend, but usually not more than two consecutive hours. Students adapt quickly to the innovative scheduling because it is tailored to the learning styles and optimal attention spans of the typical adult learner.
  • 6. Mount St. Mary’s College • WEEKEND COLLEGE • www.WeekendCollege.org4 Weekend College offers nine accredited bachelor’s degree programs. BA IN ENGLISH The English major explores how people communicate and reflect on their existence. It gives sustained training in critical thinking, writing, creative self-expression, and the perceptive reading of literature. Because English majors get extensive experience in analyzing, solving problems, researching, organizing, studying human behavior, writing, and speaking, they have the background for careers in law, business management, journalism, public relations, teaching, public administration, and many areas of writing. BS IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION This degree program is designed for those who wish to advance their careers in business. The courses focus on management, information systems, organizational behavior, business law, accounting, marketing and finance. Students can select a concentration in: Marketing, International Business, Management, Accounting or create their own specialization. The program is structured to incorporate workplace experience into the fabric of the classroom. All courses emphasize discussion, group projects, and written communication. BA IN ENGLISH AND BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION This joint major combines the liberal arts emphasis of the English major with the professional preparation of the business administration major. BA IN LIBERAL ARTS The liberal arts major encourages the study of human beings and societies from the multiple perspectives of the humanities and the social sciences. Students can explore and combine insights into human art and activity that are revealed by psychology, literature, art, history, philosophy, religious studies, music, sociology, economics, and anthropology. The liberal arts major provides a solid background for graduate work in law, public administration, and most fields in the humanities and social sciences. Students who want a professional specialization should combine the major with a minor like business administration or psychology. (Majors continue on page 7) A Major Decision Pick the major that sounds the most enticing or that best suits your career.

  • 8. Mount St. Mary’s College • WEEKEND COLLEGE • www.WeekendCollege.org6 Sandra P. Pena student I came to Mount St. Mary’s College as a traditional student 22 years ago and earned my associate’s degree.  I liked the one-on- one support. Twenty years later, I chose the Mount because of my past experience here and to accomplish my dream of earning my bachelor’s degree in business administration from my alma mater.    I work 50 to 60 hours a week in banking and in addition to that I’m not at home on Weekend College weekends, so I asked my family if I should keep going and they said, “Don’t stop!” It has been one the best decisions I ever made.   The great thing about Weekend College is that you meet people who are going through the same thing as you, and we receive a tremendous amount of support from the faculty. It’s like a big family.
  • 9. Mount St. Mary’s College • WEEKEND COLLEGE • www.WeekendCollege.org 7 (Majors continued from page 4) BA IN FILM AND SOCIAL JUSTICE Focuses on a strong liberal arts, social justice, and social science foundation, along with the technical and professional skills necessary to prepare adult students for careers in the film, television, and digital media industries. Students receive assistance with creating a career plan, filmography, resume, finding internships, and graduate opportunities. They may choose an area of emphasis (production, social justice, or marketing), or may opt for a general film degree with no emphasis.  BA IN GERONTOLOGY This degree program explores the biopsychosocial dimensions of human life development, with a focus on the rapidly expanding aging population of the U.S. Gerontology is interdisciplinary with courses drawn from gerontology, sociology, biology, philosophy, and religious studies. Career options include case management and care management, social work, and non-profit or for-profit management. The major also provides preparation for graduate studies in social work, public policy, law, and research. BA IN RELIGIOUS STUDIES This major is designed to provide an academic foundation for a career related to religious studies or to ministry in mainstream Christian churches. It can also lead to further graduate study in theology or religion. (Majors continue on page 8)
  • 10. Mount St. Mary’s College • WEEKEND COLLEGE • www.WeekendCollege.org8 (Majors continued from page 7) BA IN SOCIOLOGY This major studies human behavior within a multitude of contexts, from the family, the community, and the workplace to the regional, national, and global arenas. It helps students prepare for professional careers in such areas as criminology, race/ ethnic relations, law enforcement, and community relations, as well as providing a solid foundation for graduate studies in social work, counseling, public policy, urban development, or law school. BS IN SOCIAL WORK The courses in this major challenge students to understand what it means to advocate for some of the nation’s neediest residents.Taking a biopsychosocial approach to understanding human behavior, you will learn about human anatomy, human psychology, families, couples, juvenile crime, health and illness, caregiving for elders, death and dying. You will also acquire strong practical skills in case management, qualitative and quantitative research methods, statistical analysis, identifying and dealing with ethical problems, and actually working with clients in real-life settings. The program is preparation for either an immediate professional career or for graduate studies in social work. The demand for social workers is high and is projected to continue to grow in the future, particularly in healthcare, gerontology, substance abuse rehabilitation, adoption services, foster care, juvenile justice, grief counseling, job training, and emergency or disaster relief. Call the Weekend College for more details at 213.477.2866. INTERACTION AMONG THE PROGRAMS Because these degree programs are run concurrently, students are free to choose electives outside their major. Business majors, for example, can enhance their learning by choosing courses in literature, philosophy, history, psychology, and political science, while liberal arts and English majors can seek the challenge of business courses. MINORS Because of the variety of business and liberal arts courses offered within the Weekend College format, students who wish to specialize in a secondary discipline can supplement their major area of interest with any of these 11 minors: Art history Business Administration English Gerontology History Philosophy Political Science Pre-law Psychology Religious Studies Sociology
  • 11. Mount St. Mary’s College • WEEKEND COLLEGE • www.WeekendCollege.org 9 Luis Gabriel Perez student I tried other schools, but when it was a choice between putting food on the table or going to class, work always won. Weekend College is more convenient. It’s on the weekend, but not every weekend. The convenience and reputation were the two top reasons I came here.
  • 12. Christy A. Cannariato Mount St. Mary’s College • WEEKEND COLLEGE • www.WeekendCollege.org10
  • 13. Christy A. Cannariato, alumna When I was going to school here, I worked 60 hours during the week, and the weekends I reserved solely for my education. I loved that I could compartmentalize work and school rather than have to switch gears to do both work and school in the same day.      I attended evening classes for court reporting and for my master’s degree, but in those types of commuter programs, with students rushing to and from class, I never got close to other students.  Weekend College is much more collegial. You bond in the same way that students bond in traditional undergraduate programs.   Dr. Christy A. Cannariato, faculty member, English The creativity and work ethic among the Weekend College students is amazing. For example, I was teaching a class on Renaissance literature.  At that time the national economy was starting to tank, so I thought it might be interesting if the students wrote a poem about the contemporary state of the economy using iambic pentameter with the suggested title “Ode to the Economy.”  The project wasn’t on the syllabus, so it couldn’t count toward their grades, but I asked them to try it just for fun, and we made a contest out of it with small prizes awarded.  I was astounded by their enthusiasm for this project!  Every student contributed a poem, and the quality was really quite impressive. These students were already insanely busy, and they still found the time to do this extra project.   I tell my students on the first day of every semester that my being an alum is a double-sided coin for them. Because I went through the program, I understand the challenges they face, and I design and schedule assignments and exams with those challenges in mind.  However, because I graduated from this program, I know what’s possible.  I don’t dumb down the curriculum for them.  I expect just as much, if not more, from Weekend College students as I ever did from traditional university students.  Each semester, Weekend College students exceed my expectations. The small class sizes and student enthusiasm make these classes more akin to honors-level seminars than to typical undergraduate courses. Been There, Done That Christy attended Weekend College and earned her bachelor of arts in Liberal Arts in 1996. After earning a master’s in English from California State University, Long Beach in 1999, and a Ph.D. in English from University of California, Santa Barbara in 2007, she returned to Mount St. Mary’s and began teaching literature at Weekend College in 2008. All the while, she has continued her career as a court reporter. Mount St. Mary’s College • WEEKEND COLLEGE • www.WeekendCollege.org 11
  • 14. Mount St. Mary’s College • WEEKEND COLLEGE • www.WeekendCollege.org12 See the World and Continue Toward Your Degree Through Travel Study Each year the Weekend College offers several two-week Travel Study Programs to Europe or Asia with one or two faculty members. They are designed to help students get first-hand experience of other people, cultures, institutions, and lifestyles. 9 5 8 2 7 4 3 6 1 Bonus Reasons to Choose Weekend College: Student Services Students in the Weekend College enjoy all of the facilities and support services that are part of the traditional Mount St. Mary’s collegiate experience. Some facilities and services are normally in operation during weekends; others are made available at special hours on weekends for Weekend College students. You can also use these facilities and services on weekdays and evenings, and at either the Doheny Campus or the Chalon Campus in Brentwood. Services include: 1. The Library 2. Students can earn their degrees faster by increasing their course load from nine units a semester to as many as 12 or 13 with these courses.
  • 15. Randal Cummings faculty member, religious studies The students at the Weekend College generally arrive with a great deal of life experience, maturity, and professional skill sets, and are often quite advanced in their own career paths. This brings a great amount of real-world interaction into classroom discussions and student presentations that would be difficult to match in undergraduate programs elsewhere. I treat the Weekend College students as though they are colleagues. Many of the student accomplishments are outstanding and the papers and presentations already reflect post- graduate level skills. As a result, our graduates come out of here with a great sense of accomplishment, self- actualization, and confidence. Mount St. Mary’s College • WEEKEND COLLEGE • www.WeekendCollege.org 13
  • 16. Mount St. Mary’s College • WEEKEND COLLEGE • www.WeekendCollege.org14 Group or One-On-One Information Sessions Group Information Sessions are held twice a semester to acquaint prospective students with Weekend College. You may meet personally with an academic advisor at a time that’s convenient for you without any obligation. If you have student copies of college transcripts, we can make an unofficial preliminary assessment of transcript credit to estimate the time it might take to complete your bachelor’s degree at Weekend College. Application Process • Call to get a printed application, 213.477.2866, or apply online at www.WeekendCollege.org. • Pay the application fee. • Request to have official transcripts mailed to Weekend College from every college or university previously attended. • If you have not completed at least 24 units (approximately one year) of college study, request an official transcript from your high school or an official copy of your GED. • If you will need financial aid for your first semester, speak with the Financial Aid Office at least two months before your start date to complete the appropriate forms. Acceptance Into the Program Every application will be acknowledged by mail within 48 hours of its receipt on campus. As soon as all official transcripts have been received, your file will be presented to the Committee on Admissions. Committee meetings are held weekly to expedite the process and avoid long interim periods between inquiry and enrollment. In selecting potential candidates for the program, Mount St. Mary’s College is principally interested in adults who are committed to completing their degree, who have the requisite time- management skills and motivation to function successfully within the unusual weekend format, and who are comfortable with the level of maturity that prevails among the student body at the Weekend College. Students are admitted three times each year—for the fall, spring, or summer. Once you receive a letter of acceptance, you should telephone the Weekend College Office for further consultation and a course-planning session. Admission — Taking the First Steps
  • 17. Mount St. Mary’s College • WEEKEND COLLEGE • www.WeekendCollege.org 15 Getting Started and Selecting Courses You should visit the campus to meet personally with your advisor to select courses before the first semester of attendance. By the time of this meeting, a transcript analysis has been prepared by the Office of Advisement, and informed decisions can be made about appropriate course choices. Or you can take care of this by a telephone conference. Once you are enrolled, most of the advising and consultation about program planning are done by telephone and e-mail. Orientation and Registration On a Saturday prior to the first semester of enrollment in the Weekend College, you will attend a half-day Orientation session. At this time details of classroom locations, financial aid, and business office transactions are explained, and final questions answered. You purchase books, collect a syllabus for each course in which you are registered, and learn about advance assignments that faculty expect to be presented at the first class meeting. These assignments usually amount to some preliminary reading and sometimes a short paper or autobiographical sketch to assist the instructor in assessing your own and your group’s preparation for the course. These assignments help to maximize the teaching/learning time on the first weekend and launch students immediately into full participation in the academic enterprise. Placement Testing On Orientation day, there is a short placement test in mathematics. For anyone coming to college for the first time, this is extremely important. No specific preparation is required and it should not be a basis for concern; it is not used for admissions decisions, but rather merely to assure that you enroll in the correct level of instruction. CLEP Examination Mount St. Mary’s College gives academic credit for work that has been successfully completed through the College Level Examination Program of the College Board. Information on this outside testing is available from the Weekend College Office. CLEP evaluates the equivalent of lower-division course work; ACT/PEP examinations in upper-division courses are also accepted for college credit. Degree Planning Once you have started Weekend College, begin planning your future semesters in advance. To be certain you are on the correct path toward your degree, you must consult with your academic advisor every semester before you enroll in your next semester’s classes.
  • 18. Mount St. Mary’s College • WEEKEND COLLEGE • www.WeekendCollege.org16 Tuition Reimbursement Many companies provide full or partial payment of tuition for their employees. Ask your human resources or personnel officer about tuition assistance for higher education. These benefits may come in such forms as tuition reimbursement, payment for books and supplies, flex-time at work, time off for attendance at classes, or help with child care. Deferred Payments Students can defer their tuition payment over a period of four equal installments during the course of a semester. After the 25 percent required deposit has been paid, deferred payment arrangements may be made with the Business Office at the time of registration. The current semester’s tuition must be paid in full before a student will be permitted to enroll in any future semester. Credit Card Payments Students may charge their tuition payments on Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover. Veteran’s Benefits The Mount is an approved institution for veterans under Title 38 of the United States Code.
