In 2012, we conducted a multi-university workshop to develop competencies in conducting research in diverse populations. Since 2013, SC CTSI scholars and trainees take a short-course in Research in Diverse Populations. However, we were lacking experiential activities, outside the academic setting. In 2013, we developed the idea to match scholars with community mentors. Here we present the progress and success. Learn more about SC CTSI http://sc-ctsi.org/

Cecilia M. Patino-Sutton MD, MeD, PhD
Director of Education SC CTSI
Department of Preventive Medicine
Keck School of Medicine

3. Los Angeles County
10.4 million residents
From more than 140 cultures
Speak as many as 224 languages
4. SC CTSI Goals
Improve the health of diverse and under-represented
minorities of Los Angeles County
Train a cadre of young researchers who have
competency in translating research findings to the
community and improve their health.
5. Background and Problem
2012 we conducted a multi-university workshop to
develop competencies in conducting research in
diverse populations.
Since 2013 SC CTSI Scholars and Trainees take a
short-course in Research in Diverse Populations.
However, we were lacking experiential activities,
outside the academic setting.
6. Community Mentor
In 2013 we pitched the idea to SC CTSI Community
Engagement
Identify Scholars
Align them with a Community Mentor
Give t the new team, 1 year, to identify an opportunity
for the Scholar to present their research to an
appropriate community audience that would, in turn,
inform their research
10. Other Successes
Scholars
Established new networks and colleagues outside the academic setting
Learned to build trust within the community
Learned from individuals who are impacted by the health issue their
research addresses was empowering.
Informed their current research based on input from the community.
Mentors
Learned about the research topic and jump started new projects with the
Scholar
Felt empowered and challenged by mentoring academic mentees
11. Summary
We were able to the create appropriate logistics
to ensure the success of the program.
All three Scholar Mentor teams met the
Program’s expectations and successfully
delivered at least one oral presentation about
their research.
Both Scholars and Mentors were satisfied with
the program and evaluated the Program as
useful for their careers.
12. Impact
We believe that providing young physician-
scientists with the CMP experience can help
accelerate the translation of their research results
to the community and improve the health of
diverse and under-represented communities
throughout the LA country.
13. Next Steps
Based on feedback the CMP will be scaled
up in subsequent years, eventually
becoming a requirement of the KL2
Program at the SC CTSI.
We also plan to write a manual of
procedures of the program and share
across CTSA’s.
