In June 2020 a two-day workshop titled ‘Disrupting digital monolingualism’ was held , bringing together leading researchers, educators, digital practitioners, language-focused professionals, policy makers and other interested parties to address the challenges of multilingualism in digital spaces and to collectively propose new models and solutions. The workshop aimed to combine both conceptual (strategy, policy and theory) and practical perspectives (digital ecosystems, methods and tools with a focus on language), and in so doing to strengthen connections between numerous overlapping digital and languages-driven conversations and initiatives along four axes of action: • Linguistic and geocultural diversity in digital knowledge infrastructures • Working with multilingual data • Transcultural and translingual approaches to digital study • Artificial intelligence, machine learning and NLP in language worlds Presentation at Global MSU symposium http://msuglobaldh.org/schedule/ 13 April 2021

iDo or iDon't ‐ Using Tablets in the Classroom - Course Technology Computing Conference Presenter: Lucy Parker, California State University, Northridge myCSUNtablet Initiative is a partnership of California State University, Northridge and Apple, Inc. that seeks to reduce the cost and increase the quality of learning materials for students. Participating students will use iPads and gain immediate access to e-books and related e-learning materials in a suite of courses in select majors. Participating faculty will receive an iPad and help from professional course designers who understand the relation among effective teaching, creative use of authoring tools, and accessible design. Why CSUN? The academic plans and IT Vision@2015 have anticipated a widening deployment of portable devices and cloud technology for teaching and learning. Faculty already are using such strategies to engage students with different styles and paces for learning. CSUN students are urban commuters, tech-savvy, and on tight budgets. Portability, cost control, and media-enriched content that can be personalized are their common expectations. Why Apple? Many companies make tablets; several produce and solicit applications but few have thought as holistically as Apple. They are sensitive to users’ preferences and have created a system that integrates devices, applications, authoring tools, repositories, and consultation. We at CSUN can benefit from progressive, coherent thinking as we re-think course design and delivery. Why now? At CSUN, the largest college has issued iPads to the faculty, as have departments in other colleges. The device has become the industry standard in nearby K-12 and helping professions, with whom we place interns and graduates. And the governor signaled in the budget an interest in supporting technological solutions for persistent problems in access, cost, and completion in higher education. Finally, the surge in hybrid courses and e-books that our faculty author indicates that CSUN has reached a tipping point for strategic change. An iPad-centric curriculum also offers some exciting possibilities to transform information delivery as well as student participation. Like all pedagogy, it can be a positive and even progressive form of education. Or not, depending on how the actual curriculum is designed and implemented. Professors need to change their archaic views on attention spans and realize that students and society in general are integrating the digital world into the real world. For better or worse, it’s inevitable and professors need to play along. This lecture will discuss TOP (10-20) iPad uses in the classrooms but also discusses concerns on standards of teaching and learning and if low-cost faculty-generated etextbooks are a real match to top quality publisher generated traditional books/ebooks.

E-Discovery: How do Litigation Hold, BYOD, and Privacy Affect You? - Course Technology Computing Conference Presenter: Amelia Phillips, Highline Community College E-discovery is defined as “gathering electronically stored information (ESI) for use in litigation”. At first glance, this appears to be a straightforward statement, but upon further examination one finds that it encompasses a broad range of items. Over 90% of documents produced by companies now are electronic. Older paper files have been converted to microfiche or PDF files. Add to this email, text messages, social media (yes, even the IRS has a Facebook page) and you have an idea of the amount of information that becomes this new term called “Big Data”. Terabytes of data will soon become petabytes of data. Are we ready? Are our students prepared for this new era? E-Discovery is a field that affects not only the lawyers, but the IT support staff, and how companies do business. In this talk you will be introduced to some of the new technology in the field such as predictive coding, forensic linguistics, and social media archiving. You will also be shown some of the new tools on the market that you can use in your classrooms to prepare your students and yourself for this fast evolving arena. What does a company need to do when a litigation hold is in place? What response needs to come from the legal staff, the IT support staff, the managers, and the average employee? How does this affect the BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) policies? Which comes first - employee privacy, freedom of information or corporate security? You will walk away from this talk with a methodology to incorporate this new topic into your curriculum. You will also be given ideas of how to make this affordable for your labs, what foundations your students need, and how to deliver this in a way that appeals to the business, IT or legal oriented student. Redesigning a Computer Concepts Course Using SAM and SAM Training - Course Technology Computing Conference Presenter: Katherine Winters, University of Tennessee, Chattanooga In the traditional computer concepts course, the professor assigns a chapter to read. If it is a face to face class, we will lecture on that chapter and/or discuss it. In an online class, we may hold a discussion on material from that chapter using a series of posted questions. Perhaps we will assign quizzes on the readings or assign papers to write, but the emphasis is on reading the textbook. That is the traditional approach. The flipped classroom provides a different approach to this style of teaching, but the emphasis is still on reading the material. Regardless of the mechanisms we put in place or the approaches we take, we all fight the battle of getting students to read their assignments. Assuring your students read the material in an online class is even more difficult to achieve; students simply search for the answers online. I know there are tools that lock down your browser, but students are able to by-pass such locks by simply using another device. The bottom line is that it is difficult to get students to read assignments, and a lot of our attention is spent in trying to force our students to do just that. I decided not to fight the fight and redesigned my Computer Concepts course to use SAM and the embedded video clips found in SAM training. If you have not seen SAM Training for Computer Concepts and you teach Computer Concepts, you must look at it as an alternative to traditional textbooks. In my class a textbook is not required; they use the SAM training video clips which correspond to chapter topics in a traditional text. I am able to present the same material just in a novel way. One student came to me and said “The way you designed this course is ingenious. It is great.” This presentation will share my experience of using SAM training to teach computer concepts. I will explore student and faculty reactions and show grade comparisons. My goal is for you to leave this presentation with a new idea that you can adapt to meet your particular needs.

Pivot Tables and Beyond Data Analysis in Excel 2013 - Course Technology Computing Conference Presenter: Patrick Carey, Cengage Learning Author Excel is sometimes called the most popular "database" in the world, not because it's a database but because it makes data so accessible that users often turn to spreadsheets for data entry. Yet for all that, Excel's tools for data analysis and modeling remain largely untapped by the average user. In this, pivot tables may be the most powerful and least utilized tool for data exploration. In this presentation we'll examine some of the new enhancements to pivot tables introduced in Excel 2013. We'll examine how to set up relationships using the Excel Data Model to summarize information across multiple data tables. And then we'll go beyond, exploring the data modeling and data visualizing tools provided by the PowerPivot and Power View add-ins, interpreting data not just numerically but through visual imagery, charts, and interactive maps.
