Positive Corporate Culture
The corporate culture refers to the combined attitudes and
behaviors of the people in a corporation. The type of culture in
a business can impact the productivity and effectiveness of the
management and workers. A positive corporate culture results in
motivated and satisfied workers that strive to see the company
succeed. A negative corporate culture results in poor employee
2. morale and lowered productivity. The management is
responsible for creating a culture where employees can thrive.
When managers create a positive work culture they have
established a place where workers can be their most productive.
Research show that is the employee is unhappy they will
treat the customer poorly (Morrell, 2011). Unhappy employees
have a negative impact on the business. Happy employees treat
customers kindly and with care resulting in loyalty and
increased sales. When it is clear that the management cares
about the employees it will result in employees going above and
beyond to ensure the company reaches their goals. Happy
employees support the vision and the mission of the company
and do not seek employment elsewhere.
The characteristics of the happy employee are a willingness
to ensure tasks are accomplished and all goals are reached.
Happy employees understands their responsibilities in the
company and is respected and treated well by the management.
The happy employee is confident in their role and is always
treated with fairness and respect. They are motivated,
productive and satisfied. Typically, a happy employee
completes necessary duties and responsibilities with little
direction (Long, 2014). They feel supported by the management
and will be enthusiastic about completing their duties.
When employees are unhappy the end result will be high
employee turnover. High employee attrition can have a negative
impact on the organization. If an organization constantly has to
train and hire employees it impacts the daily operations of the
business, the corporate culture, and requires the expenditure of
funds for continuously training new employees. When the
management establishes a positive work culture there will be
fewer employees leaving the company. Managers create a
positive work culture through example and encouraging fair and
kind treatment amongst the workers.
A manager can create a positive work environment by
creating relationships with employees and allowing for a happy
but productive work environment. Businesses that focus solely
3. on the bottom line do not focus on the needs of the employee
but on the needs of the business. These businesses will not have
long term success. Applebee’s is a good example of a company
creating a positive work culture that results in major success
(Coffee, 2013). The employees at Applebee’s are encouraged to
be happy and friendly to each other and to their guests. This
friendly and happy environment has resulted in a company with
over 2400 locations across the globe.
It is essential to have a positive work culture in order for
any business to be a success. The leader creates the positive
work environment by establishing core values that are easily
embraced by the employees and encouraging a conflict free
environment. When the leader is negative the employees will be
negative but is the management creates an environment where
everyone is friendly and respectful, employees will be happy
leading to a positive work environment. If an organization has a
negative work environment it will impact every aspect of the
organization.
Improving a negative work culture will improve
productivity and boast employee morale. The negative work
culture can be changed through a new clear vision focused on
everyone in the organization treating each other with respect
and dignity (Morrell, 2011). The HR department must select
people that are friendly and outgoing and avoid hiring
employees that display a tendency to be negative. In order to
improve a negative work culture the management must focus on
encouraging everyone to display friendly and welcoming
behavior to other employees and customers. The negative work
environment leads to employees that have no interest in seeing
the business succeed.
The management must establish an open door policy and
establish effective ways to manage any conflict. When
employees have a voice it leads to less conflict and happier
employees. This includes encouraging employees to engage in
social interactions and always keeping employees informed
about new changes. Lastly employees should always be
4. recognized for their hard work through praise and rewards.
Rewards can come in the form of raises, bonuses, and career
advancement. When employees are rewarded for their hard work
they feel appreciated which leads to higher job satisfaction.
The positive corporate culture will only lead to positive
benefits for both the employee and the employer. When
employees are happy and satisfied it is displayed in their
behavior in the work environment. A positive corporate culture
results in higher productivity and strong customer loyalty which
in turn results in a successful and profitable business.
